It has been a very long time since I have been truly fascinated by a book. I'm really grateful and happy that I read this story. When I read the short description, I was intrigued but not really convinced. Even though I didn't know what to expect, I would have never expected to find such a joy to read this absolutely wonderful story. Hopefully, many people will read and share how wonderful this book is. And I really hope that there will be an English version of this soon (if there isn't already one).
The idea was refreshing and the storytelling felt real. I fell in love with all the characters in the story starting with Sebi, Halbbart, Geni, Teufels-Anneli and so on. The story felt so perfect for me from the beginning till the end. For me, it felt like a fairytale for adults; it was not just the world through the eyes of an innocent boy but it also gave food for thought by commenting on what is right or wrong, where some parts are even still relevant today.
Das war eine sehr schöne Geschichte, Eusebius. Man wird sie bestimmt noch lang erzählen, und irgendwann wird sie die Wahrheit sein.
Basically, it was a coming-of-age story from the perspective of Sebi, starting and ending with "Halbbart" who is a stranger who suddenly appears in the village with a badly burnt face and many secrets. Sebi, the storyteller and main characters, is a young boy living in a small and rather poor village in Switzerland around 1300.
The book not only describes the relationship between Halbbart and Sebi but also includes the life of Sebi involving all kinds of characters from the village and surrounding area. There is a whole set of diverse, lovely, crazy, beautiful, old and stupid characters which enhanced the reading experience. It was not just some story loaded with historical facts even though it was focusing on the life of a boy around 1300 showing social, religious and political aspects of that time.
I really don't want to reveal too much and I think I can't even pick out which part I liked most because there were SO many things I liked about the book. Teufels-Anneli who tells crazy stories to people but is actually not that crazy. Geni, the brother of Sebi, who has his heart in the right place which unfortunately is not always good. Hubertus, a poor soul, a boy who knew surprisingly much but was still a boy after all. And Sebi of course, who really grows from the beginning to the end; you can actually feel his slight growth alone in the way he speaks. I could go on with Stoffel, Kätterli, Laurenz, and so on. I felt I got immersed into the story more and more with each page.
It was such a great read. The language is very natural and has a nice flow. The author uses words fitting to the setting which made me smile and chuckle at many situations. (I hope this won't get lost in any translations... but I can't imagine how a good translation would look like) The chapters are rather short but it fits to the story and even though the book is rather long, I just read through it in few days. For those of you who are open for a new kind of story with magical elements and an unusual main character, you should definitely try to read this book. The beginning may be slow and it may take few chapters until you get into the flow, but you will not regret this read.
Geschichten ausdenken ist wie lügen, aber auf eine schöne Art.
(Yes, indeed, spinning stories is like lying but in a beautiful way.)
