In den Augen meiner Mutter

Rate this book

There are always those tropes we seem to be drawn to and one of mine is the mother, father, sister, brother, lover who disappears and then is found again. We are well familiar with the beginning and the ending, but it is that middle part which makes or breaks the story. Is the fill-in to slow, is it plausible or is the reader required to suspend disbelief?

The Last Time I Saw You begins with Georgie who is over 8 months pregnant and home alone as her husband is away on business and she is scrolling through social media she sees her long lost mother Nancy who has just rescued a lost child on an island off Scotland. The story is told in alternating chapters between Georgie's and Nancy's point a view shifting time as well from past to present. There were bits which could have moved along a bit faster and I found some of the back story a bit incredulous. I would have appreciated the story if it were buffed, filed and polished a bit, the jagged edges didn't quite do for me.

On the bright side, I felt the characters were very well done. I really felt I knew Georgie and Nancy as well as Georgie's brother Dan who plays a huge part.

I would recommend this to those who like this particular trope.

Jo Leevers has a superbly simple tone to her writing that hits all the right notes and reminds me of Maggie O'Farrell. I was completely drawn in and invested in Georgie and her missing mother, Nancy. I loved that we got both sides of their story in the dual timeline and dual narrative. This is a journey in the literal and metaphorical sense as Georgie and her brother search for answers about loss and abandonment, of what family means and how their childhood shaped who they became as adults. It is a layered and utterly compelling read.

I was so emotional about this book. Through personal experience with my own mother, it made me really think about a mother’s perspective of why she has to run away. It really put relationships and family at wars into perspective. It’s a must read!

Thanks to Jo, NetGalley, and Lake Union for the advanced copy of this title in return for an honest review.

I cannot fully explain just how much I loved Jo's previous book, Tell Me How This Ends. It was heart-breaking and beautiful and tender and sympathetic and just gorgeous. And so when she got in touch asking if I wanted to read her new book, I practically screamed at the chance! I knew that if it was anything like the first one, it would be sublime.

Each chapter is from the point-of-view of either Nancy (the Mum) or Georgie (the daughter), covering from 1984 to 2015. I blow hot and cold with multiple POVs, as they can get too complicated, but she's done well to just use the two main players. It gives us different views to the events but makes the reading seamless.

I liked Georgie. She is heavily pregnant when we meet her, and she's often thinking about whether it was becoming mother that made her mum walk out, so she's worried she will be the same. But I liked her. She felt very normal, just trying to get through life whilst battling a lot of problematic memories. We also meet her brother Dan in her chapters, and he was also a problematic soul, and I really felt sorry for him, almost as if he was my younger brother.

Nancy...what did I think of Nancy? At first I wanted to dislike her. I mean, what mother walks out on her young children? What reason could she possibly have that makes that the only decision? But the more I read about her and her upbringing and whatnot, the more layered she became and the more I started to see things from her sie. She was endlessly fascinating, and so was the comparison made between her and Georgie, especially now Georgie was about the become a mother.

There are 55 chapters, which might seem like a lot but for me who likes a shorter chapter, I liked it. 320 pages in 55 chapters makes for quick reading.

Much like Jo's first book, this had me hooked instantly. She has such a talent for writing very real and vulnerable people. I devoured it in a matter of ours. I sat down to start it and didn't move until I'd finished.

It's so moving, in a variety of ways. In sad ways, yes, but in angry ways, despair, wonderful, happy, joyful, hopeful, and loving ways too.

It's so heart-breaking but heart-warming. It's about family, blood and otherwise. It's about making your own family and letting go. But it's also about the importance of forgiveness and moving forward.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to say it does deal with some difficult topics, including relationship problems, emotional abuse, stalking, drinking problems, coercive control, manipulation, abandonment, separation, loneliness, death, grief etc.

I don't think Jo realises the hold she has over me with these books. Every sentence is exquisite. This is just Jo's second book and it, and she, is exceptional. One of the most talented writers of raw emotion, and I would implore everyone to red at least one because she is an absolute master storyteller.

I was lucky enough to read Jo Leevers' The Last Time I Saw You as an advanced reader copy (it comes out in July 2024) and I loved the fresh take on what could have been a cliche or trope of a mother leaving her young family. Thanks to dual points of view, the character of Nancy remained as nuanced as that of her daughter, Georgie, and I loved this family drama turned mystery as Georgie, now an adult on the brink of motherhood herself, follows fresh leads to find her mother. Pick this one up for sure!

"The Last Time I Saw You" by Jo Leevers is women's fiction, a family drama.

Georgie is about to have a baby. She sees a news story about an older woman who rescues a missing young child, and Georgie recognizes her from the picture. It is her mother, the one who left her and her brother when they were children twenty years ago! She decides she needs to go find her mother and talk with her. After some travel issues, she contacts her estranged brother, Dan, to help her. The story is a lot of travel and talking.

The audiobook is narrated by Karen Cass. She did a pretty good job, but a couple of the male characters sounded almost identical, which is confusing.

⭐️ 3.5 ⭐️

This was a random Amazon First Reads pick, but i actually liked it more than I expected! While this novel wasn’t earth shattering, it was a beautiful story about a complicated family. Georgie, who is pregnant with her first child, comes together with her estranged brother Dan to find their mother, who left the family when they were kids.

Through the journey to find Nancy, the siblings rekindle their connection, and secrets they have each held for years come to light. I loved the flashback chapters told from Nancy and Georgie’s perspectives throughout the years, and I think the author handled some sensitive topics (emotional and physical abuse, abandonment) really tastefully and realistically.

I don’t necessarily think this knocked it out of the park, but reading this book while pregnant certainly hit me in the feels, especially at the end. 🥹

This audiobook was made available for me to listen to and review by Jo Leevers, Brilliance Audio, and NetGalley.

This kind of an adult coming-of-age story told in dual timelines. Georgie is at the tale end of her first pregnancy when a viral new story about the rescue of a child, reveals the hero to be the mother who abandoned Georgie and her brother 20 yrs ago.
Determined to discover how and why their mother left, Georgie and her brother Dan, set off on a road trip to find Nancy, their absent mother.

Nancy has her own hard tale to share. This is a story of loss, abandonment and the resulting trauma in childhood, informs and forms adult personalities. This mainly focuses on healing generational trauma and is beautifully handled. I don't want to give too much of the story away and am unsure how to speak in more detail without revealing the salient plot points, so please excuse my relative brevity.

The narrator of this audiobook is Karen Cass. Ms. Cass does an amazing job of using her convey the emotions and depth of feeling in the narrative while simultaneously fading into the background. Perfect for this style of story.

Thank you to Jo Leevers, Brilliance Audio, and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to and review this audiobook. All opinions and viewpoints expressed in this review are my own.

This book took a while to get into but once you got past the first chapter I couldn't put the book down.
This book highlights relationships, post natal depression, alcoholism and the effects it can have on relationships.
The book shows different points of view of each character involved and how this moulded their adult lives!

The Last Time I Saw You by Jo Leevers and narrated artfully by Karen Cass is a compelling tale of a family coming back together in the strangest of circumstances. Throughout the journey, secrets are unearthed, uncovered and resolved. New life is on the way and new lives to be built

Georie is about to have a baby, her first, when she ses a news report about a strange woman who has rescued a child. A loner on a remote scottish island, who disappeared from the limelight of media that had been focussed on the search. However, that is not just any vagrant, she is sure that is her mother

However, Georgie's partner is away for work and she has no way of getting from the South-West up to Scotland, no way apart from her brother Dan, who she has not spoken to in two years following the passing of his closest friend Finn, and Georgies then boyfriend, the man that came between their close bond

Georgie and Dan used to be so close, even more so after their mother walked out on the family, only sending one postcard to each of them, with exactly the same message and not a word since. Or so they thought

The road trip unearths a lot of secrets, not least the actions of their father and stepmother (who is a boss! Absolutely loved her by the end), the mysterious (and very ick) Gerry, who is the villain of the story and their mother. Artfully told from the POV of af Georgie and Nancy, over three timelines, this is a belter of a novel

Slice of life, road trip, drama and gentle humour, defo a book to get your teeth into and enjoy. Loved it!

Thank you to Netgalley, Brilliance Publishing | Brilliance Audio, the author Jo Leevers and narrator Karen Cass for this noteworthy and utterly compelling ALC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own

What a master storyteller 💕 It’s so heart-breaking but heart-warming; so moving in a variety of ways. I loved how the mother, Nancy and daughter, Georgie shared their raw POVs from the past and present covering a variety of misunderstood traumas. Such a wonderful portrayal of forgiving and moving on.

Did Not Finish!

I wanted to like this book, but it was going nowhere after 5 chapters I stopped. I don’t know if it’s because I’m not from England, but she wrote this with so many words I have never heard of and had to look up in dictionary to find out what it meant. The book jumped around way too much from Georgie to Nan to in the past to the present. In my opinion it jumped around way too much. Why can’t anyone ever write a book that just tells the story and not all these people and time period jumps? This book jumped from chapter to chapter with a different character. All of the chapters are named Georgie or Nan. No other characters. It’s so bizarre. It was too much for me.

The Last Time I Saw You is the second book I’ve read by author Jo Leevers. I felt that this was a rather sad book about a somewhat dysfunctional family. The mother up and leaves her children but the basis for her leaving is not how it looks. She does it partly out of fear but it’s mainly all the secrets and lies that have caused the destruction of the family unit. Through my reading, I learned that not just one person was to blame for this families troubles, but that they all had a part in it. I did think that the author ended the story in a good way, as it left me feeling optimistic that these characters were able to forgive each others transgressions and that they would be able to rebuild their family unit, maybe a little different than before but still a family regardless. I’d like to thank Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for the arc to read and review. I enjoyed reading this and would recommend it to others. I’m giving it a 4 star rating and would be interested in reading more by this author in the future.

This is one of those books that really make you ponder life circumstances and wonder how you would contend with them.

When Georgie and Dan’s mother walks out of their lives, they are never told the true reason why and had to surmise things on their own. As they grew into adults, and still hadn’t heard from their mother, their need for answers became too weighty to ignore. So when a picture pops up in the news with their mother’s face in it, they set off on a very long car ride to track her down. With Georgie weeks from giving birth and Dan going through a divorce, this was quite an eventful journey.

This book brings out all the feelings - sadness, joy, confusion, anger, triumph and finally contentment. It is written beautifully and has the perfect ending.

Thank you, NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the ARC.

Georgie and Dan’s mother, Nancy, left the family home 20 years ago when they were young teenagers. They have always wondered why and where she is now.

Out of the blue, Georgie sees a photo in the news about Nan who rescued a lost young girl in Scotland. Georgie immediately calls her estranged brother who drops everything to pick her up in an old Beetle and they head from London to Scotland. With Georgie 38 weeks pregnant. What could possibly go wrong.

The story is told from different POV’s and over different timelines as we are caught up and filled in with what happened before Nancy left and after. This is a rather dysfunctional family hiding plenty of secrets, lies and regrets. There are also references to coercive behavior and date rape by a supposedly trusted older man.

Jo tackles the difficult subjects sensitively from the rape to the feelings of failure as a mother and more, and I found myself absolutely immersed in Georgia and Nancy’s lives from the first word to the last. My interest did not falter once. And there were tears!

I didn't think I would like this book at the beginning, but the more I got through it, the more I started to enjoy it. I like how it really focused on people's imperfect lives, and unraveled each piece of the story bit by bit. I appreciated the way this story wrapped up, However, I think it addressed very valid feelings of betrayal, longing, forgiveness, and understanding in realistic ways. this book probably isn't for you. But if you want a nuanced, intricate story of family and the different forms it can take, give this book a read!

The Last Time I Saw You by Jo Leevers completely drew me in. I loved how the story gently peeled back layers of the family's past and present, with unexpected secrets that kept me engaged the whole way through. The writing is thoughtful and emotionally grounded, and I felt invested in every character’s journey.

Karen Cass is a very captivating narrator who brought so much life to the story.

"Voice" is a funny thing in fiction. I recently read How to Kill Your Family, which had an incredible "voice", zinging and full of personality, but none of the mechanics of that novel actually worked.

The Last Time I Saw You is the opposite. The mechanics are solid: the characters are fine, the plotting is fine, the pacing is fine, the prose is fine. But there's no "voice" at all.
