The Understory
Luang Paw Tien, the abbot of Praeknamdang Temple, is ninety-three years old and a treasure trove of stories. In 2008, he received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) Medal from the French Ministry of Culture for his remarkable contributions to literature. His works have been translated into seven different languages including English, German, French and Spanish. His book White Shadow is considered one of the best 20 novels in Thailand. Currently, he lives in Phetchaburi, Thailand, and uses the pen name Dan-arun Saengthong in his published work.

The Understory, published by Peirene Press, is Mui Poopoksakul's translation from Thai of Saneh Sangsuk's 2003 novel, the second of his works to appear in English after Venom from the same publisher and translator (although the translator completed this book first as she explains here).
The novel open on a night near the end of December in 2510 B.E., or 1967 C.E., and the tam kwan khao ceremonies for the Goddess of Rice had come and gone, this time, mirthless occasions, without the usual fanfare, even subdued like a funeral, but the harvest season hadn’t yet arrived. The narrator introduces us to the jungle hamlet of Praeknamdang, by telling us what happened in that year both to the people of Praeknamdang and wider Thailand, before giving us some history and a glimpse into the future ("It was eighteen years before ...) but, buried in this bravura panorama is the novel's key character:
It was the year the Venerable Father Tien Thammapanyo, or Luang Paw Tien, the abbot of Praeknamdang Temple, turned ninety-three years old, and was seventy-three years into his monkhood, and though his body was ancient and he suffered because of his asthma and arthritis, he remained vital enough to walk his alms route into the village nearly every day, the round-trip distance just shy of seven kilometres, and Kamin, his big ox, who was tame as a dog, still tagged along right behind him and ate for his meals whatever food Luang Paw Tien received as alms, ate not only bananas, sugar cane, watermelon and oranges and such, but everything, indis-criminately, be it curry over rice or rice with salt-cured fish or sweets, as long as it was Luang Paw Tien who hand-fed the food to him, the ox being unwilling to accept food from anyone else's hand, being that he had once been severely injured when he had stumbled in a wua lan race, and for that he had been slated for slaughter, but Luang Paw Tien had, on an alms round, asked for the ox's life to be spared and had nursed and cared for him until he had gradually regained his strength; therefore Luang Paw Tien was the only person Kamin loved and trusted, and he accompanied the abbot practically everywhere, as far as possible.
Luang Paw Tien is most famed, particularly among the children, for his rich repository of riveting tales, some more fable like, others based on his own life - he never quite says they are all true, but certainly doesn't say they are fictional either, many of them occultist. Most are tales of the past and a way of life that is passing, but the Abbot himself sees and fears the future:
The natives and their children and grandchildren would one day be relegated to the position of serfs because, even in those years, rights to the land that had from time immemorial belonged to the people of Praeknamdang were falling into the hands of people from elsewhere. He recognized, too, that before long, the village could have a golf course, and that the heirs of Praeknamdang might end up as caddies; that the village could see a wealthy investor come in and build polytunnels for mushroom farming, and the heirs of Praeknamdang might end up as hired farmhands; or that here in the village holiday homes could be built around an artificial lake, with the development given an English name like ‘Praeknamdang Lakeville', and the heirs of Praeknamdang might end up as landscapers or security guards (the latter of which job, in his opinion, was 'one any mean dog could do, and do better than a person'); or that the village could have ponds for raising barramundi, and the heirs of Praeknamdang might end up as workers at those fish farms, as had already happened to people in other villages.
But the tale that dominates his story-telling that night, and the novel, is that of how he became a monk, a tale of a long-running battle with a tiger, one with a tragic end.
Wonderfully translated - one really feels to have been transported to around the fire and sucked in, like the children, to Luang Paw Tien's storytelling.

เราแบ่งเรื่องราวออกเป็นสองส่วน ในส่วนแรกคือ ความเป็นไปในแพรกหนามแดง วิถีสมัยใหม่เริ่มคืบคลานเข้ามาให้ชีวิตของชาวบ้านมากขึ้นแล้ว หลวงพ่อเทียน ผู้เป็นคล้ายๆศูนย์รวมจิตใจของหมู่บ้านก็เลยอาจจะมีความรู้สึกอดรนทนไม่ได้ที่จะปล่อยให้กาลเวลาและยุคสมัยเข้ามาบ่อนทำลายผู้คนในหมู่บ้าน แกเลยพยายามสร้างจิตสำนึกยึดโยงให้กับเด็กๆในหมู่บ้านด้วยเรื่องราวน่าตื่นตาตื่นใจของป่าเขาลำเนาไพร ทั้งเรื่องจอมขมังเวทย์ ช้างป่า หรือเสือสมิง เป็นกุศโลบายให้ทุกคนยังรู้สึกรักและหวงแหนความเป็นบ้านเกิด (แต่เราก็รู้แหละว่าสุดท้ายหลวงพ่อทำอะไรไม่ได้ เด็กๆโตไปเป็นผู้ใหญ่ที่โดนความเจริญทำร้ายจนหมดอาลัยตายอยาก เช่นเด็กหญิงแพร อัญชัญ ที่อดีตเป็นเด็กเรียนเก่ง เป็นมือคัดลอกเรื่องราวของหลวงพ่อให้เพื่อนๆแลกกันอ่าน สุดท้ายก็หนีตามผู้ชายไปแล้วกลายเป็นโสเภณีในเมือง) อีกนัยหนึ่งคือ เรื่องราวที่เกิดขึ้นในแพรกหนามแดง ก็เป็นเรื่องของแพรกหนามแดงเองนั่นแหละ นี่คือส่วนของอินโทร อยู่ที่ประมาณ 2/3 ของเล่ม (อ่านไม่ผิด ไม่เคยพบเคยเห็นเหมือนกันที่อินโทรจะ 50% ของเล่ม 5555)
ในส่วนที่สองคือ เรื่องเล่า เป็นเรื่องที่หลวงตาเล่าให้เด็กๆฟังในค่ำคืนหนึ่งหลายปีก่อนที่การเปลี่ยนแปลงมันจะเข้ามาถึงหมู่บ้านแบบที่ใครก็ทำอะไรไม่ได้ ซึ่งเรื่องมันพาเราไปไกลมาก เป็นนิทานเกี่ยวกับชีวิตของหลวงพ่อเองตั้งแต่เกิดมาในฐานะเด็กชายควันเทียน การที่ชีวิตต้องไปเกี่ยวโยงกับป่า และเสือผู้ดุร้ายเจ้าแห่งป่าเขา ซึ่งความสัมพันธ์ของคนและผืนป่าในส่วนนี้ถูกเรียบเรียงออกมาด้วยภาษาที่งดงามมากกกก คืออ่านแล้ววางไม่ลงเลย ในแง่ของฝีมือการเขียนคือสัมผัสได้เลยว่าแดนอรัญเป็นคนที่รักในผืนป่า ธรรมชาติมากไม่งั้นคงไม่สามารถเขียนอะไรออกมาได้อเมซซิ่งแบบนี้
โดยรวมคือมีครบทุกรส สนุกมาก เขียนได้สุดๆมาก บางช่วงเครียด็เครียดมาก ตลกก็ตลกมาก บทความรักอันแสนอบอุ่นก็เขียนดีมากกกกจนเราอยากร้องไห้กับความสุขอันท่วมท้นมากของตัวละครจริงๆ เขียนถึงเต่ากินเห็ดโคนก็รู้สึกว่ามันน่ารัก เขียนถึงวัวก็อยากซื้อวัวมาเลี้ยงบ้าง เก็บไว้ได้ทุกอารมณ์ ทั้งสุข ทั้งเศร้า ความสวยงาม ความทมิฬหินชาติไม่ปราณีใครของทั้งมนุษย์และสัตว์ร้าย แบบอ่านละเหงื่อออกมือหนังสือเปียก ตื่นเต้นจนหน้าสุดท้ายจริง

I have just managed to escape from a jungle in the east Thailand.. How did this happen? How did I end up there? This must be due to a book I bought while on a recent trip.
As I usually do in every trip, this time also, I visited a bookstore in the town, eager to find out a book that is at the top of the booklist there. Noticing my desperation, the shop assistant offered to suggest a book. This was the “The Understory” written by a Thai writer named Saneh Sangsuk. He is a leading fiction writer in Thailand. He has also won many awards in Thai and Global literary circles. However, his writings are only now being published in English.
This book has been translated to English from Thai by a Mui Poopoksakul. Mui is a lawyer living in Berlin. She has translated several selected works of major contemporary Thai writers into English. Her translation conveys emotions without being overpowering. Despite the British English accent, it is very easy and comfortable to read.
The book is about 200 pages, quickly draws us in to the narration as soon as we start. But this is definitely not a fast read. The story opens up into multiple layers. And hence requires a slow read to savour the flavour.
The Context of the story is Thailand in the 1960s, when farmland slowly started emerging from the forest. It is also a period when people are changing from peasants to workers. This is also the period when the Thai society was a jumbled mixture of hunter-gatherers, later agriculturalists, and those who were lost in the urbanization of the industrial revolution. The main protagonist of the story is Luang Paw Tien, a Buddhist monk living in the village of Praeknamdang, which lies along the forest in the east, where changes are slow to reach. He lives through the changes that transforms the village. That experience of living a lifetime through that change also transforms him into a storyteller.
Initially, the narration eases us into the book with the pleasurable art of Storytelling. That way, it binds us closely to Tien. Using that intimacy the narration slowly absorbs us into Tien’s story. The writing, which initially captures the beauty of the forest, slowly drags us into the darker depths soundlessly & suddenly through an unseen stalking tiger.
As the times progresses, he slowly presents us with his life struggles, and through them also presents the impact on the society and landscape. Our gaze, which initially opens with a kind of wonder at the narrator Tien, makes us cry, laugh and later also tremble with him. He presents both the grandeur and terror of a forest.
Tigers, peacocks, and snakes play an important role in Thai culture. We see them a lot in their traditional dances. Saneh also uses them in his story in a similar manner.
Tien's early life, which starts off sweet at first, suddenly changes its course with the arrival of a tiger. After that, he continues to live as a motherless child along with his hunter gatherer father. as the story progresses he is forced into a final confrontation with a tiger.
In this book, the tiger, Tien, and his father are symbolic of the time. His father is presented symbol of hunter gatherer society. His wife, who is interested in agriculture, is a symbol of the agrarian society that followed. Tien’s condition is symbol of the mixed state of society at that time. The tiger seems to be symbol of the change that impacts all of them.
In the end the story is one that enchants, dazzles and haunts us.

ஒரு அடர் கானகத்தில் இருந்து இப்போது தான் மீண்டு வந்திருக்கிறேன். இதுவரை நான் பார்த்தேயிராத தாய்லாந்தின் கிழக்குப் பகுதி காட்டிலிருந்து தப்பி வெளியே வந்திருக்கிறேன். எப்படி நேர்ந்தது இது? ஒரு தொழில் முறை பயணமாக சென்றபோது கண்டெடுத்த ஒரு புத்தகத்திலிருந்து தான் இந்த நிகழ்ந்திருக்க வேண்டும்.
வழக்கமாக செய்வது போலவே இந்த முறையும் அந்த ஊரில் உள்ள ஒரு புத்தகக்கடைக்கு சென்று அங்கே என்ன புத்தகம் இப்போது மிகவும் வாசிக்கப்படும் ஒன்றாக இருக்கிறது என்று அறியும் ஆவலோடு சென்றேன். அப்படிச் சென்றபோது என்னுடைய தேடலை கண்டு அங்கிருந்த கடைச் சிப்பந்தி எனக்காக தேர்ந்தெடுத்துக் கொடுத்த புத்தகம் தான் இது.
இதை எழுதியவர் சனே சங்சுக் (Saneh Sangsuk) எனப்படும் ஒரு தாய்லாந்து எழுத்தாளர். தாய்லந்தின் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க முன்னணி புனைவு எழுத்தாளர் இவர். அந்த நிலத்தின் முக்கிய கதை சொல்லியான சனே, அவர்களின் கலாச்சாரத்தையும் சரித்திரத்தையும் குறியீடாக வைத்து தன் எழுத்துகளில் மாயவித்தையை நிகழ்த்திக் காட்டும் வித்தைக்காரர். தற்கால தாய் இலக்கிய பரப்பிலும், உலக இலக்கிய பரப்பிலும் பல விருதுகளைப் பெற்றவர். ஆனாலும் அவருடைய எழுத்துக்கள் ஆங்கிலத்தில் வருவது இப்போதுதான்.
இந்த புத்தகம் தாய்லாந்து மொழியிலிருந்து மூய் பூபோக்சகுல் ( Mui Poopoksakul -சரியாக உச்சரித்திருக்கிறேனா?!) என்ற மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளரால் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. மூய், பெர்லினில் வாழும் சட்டத்தரணி / வழக்கறிஞர். தாய்லாந்தின் முக்கிய சமகால படைப்பாளிகளின் தேர்ந்தெடுத்த படைப்புகளை ஆங்கிலத்தில் மொழி பெயர்த்து வருபவர். தாய் இலக்கியத்துக்கும், உலகளாவிய ஆங்கில வாசகர்களுக்கும் பெரும் கொடையை அளித்துவருபவர். இவருடைய மொழிபெயர்ப்பு, உணர்வுகளை உறுத்தாமல் கடத்துகிறது. பிரிட்டிஷ் ஆங்கில வாடை அளித்தாலும், வாசிப்பதற்கு மிக இலகுவாகவும், வசதியாகவும் அமைந்துள்ளது. .
சனே எழுதி "The Understory" என்ற பெயரில் சுமார் 200 பக்கங்களுடன் வெளிவந்துள்ள புத்தகம் வாசிக்க ஆரம்பித்தவுடன் நம்மை வேகமாக உள்ளிழுத்துக் கொள்கிறது. ஆனால் இது வேகமாக வாசித்துக் கடந்துவிடும் ரகமல்ல. கதை, கதைக்குள் கதை, என்று பல தளங்களில் பயணிக்கும் புனைவு இது.
கதை நடப்பது, 1960களின், காட்டிலிருந்து வேளாண்நிலங்கள் வெளிவந்த தாய்லாந்து. வேளாண்குடிகளில் இருந்து மக்கள் தொழிலாளர்களாக மாறிவரும் காலகட்டமும் கூட. தாய் சமூகம், வேட்டையாடிகளாகவும், அதிலிருந்து வந்த வேளாண் குடிகளாகவும், தொழில்புரட்சியின் நகரமயமாக்களில் அமிழ்ந்து காணாமல் போய்விடுபவர்களாகவும், கலவையாக இருந்த காலகட்டமும் இதுதான். மாற்றங்கள் மெதுவாக சென்று சேரும், கிழக்குப்பகுதியின் காடோடு ஒன்றிய பிரேக்நாம்டங் என்ற கிராமத்தில் வாழும் லுவாங் பாவ் டியன் என்ற புத்த பிக்குத்தான் கதையின் முக்கிய புள்ளி. அந்த ஊரில் இருந்து மாற்றங்களை கண்டு அதனைக்கடந்து, ஒரு கதைசொல்லியாக மாறியவர்.

ஆரம்பத்தில் மிக இனிமையாகச் செல்லும் டியனின் ஆரம்பகால வாழ்க்கை, திடீரென ஒரு புலியின் வரவால் தடம் மாறி போகிறது. அதன்பின் தாயற்ற ஒரு சிறுவனாக வாழும் அவர் பிறகு அந்த புலியோடு போராட்டம் நிகழ்த்த வேண்டிய நிலைக்குத் தள்ளப்படுகிறார்.
இதில் புலியும், கதை சொல்லியும், அவர் தந்தையும் பெரும் குறியீடுகள். இதில் அவர் தந்தை வேட்டையாடியாகவும் விவசாயத்தில் நாட்டம் இல்லாதவராகவும் காட்டப்படுவதும் குறியீடு தான். விவசாயத்தில் நாட்டமுடைய அவர் மனைவி அதற்குப் பிறகான வேளாண் சமூகத்தில் குறியீடு. இதற்கு நடுவில் இரண்டும் கெட்ட நிலையில் கிடந்து தள்ளாடும் டியனின் நிலை அக்கால சமூகத்தில் நிலையை சுட்டுவதாக இருக்கிறது. அதற்கு பின்னான காலகட்டத்தின் அதிர்வுகளை குறிப்பதுதான் புலி எனத்தோன்றுகிறது.
மொத்தத்தில் பிரமிக்கவைக்கும் வாசிப்பு அனுபவத்தைக் கொடுக்கும் படைப்பு இது.
As I usually do in every trip, this time also, I visited a bookstore in the town, eager to find out a book that is at the top of the booklist there. Noticing my desperation, the shop assistant offered to suggest a book. This was the “The Understory” written by a Thai writer named Saneh Sangsuk. He is a leading fiction writer in Thailand. He has also won many awards in Thai and Global literary circles. However, his writings are only now being published in English.
This book has been translated to English from Thai by a Mui Poopoksakul. Mui is a lawyer living in Berlin. She has translated several selected works of major contemporary Thai writers into English. Her translation conveys emotions without being overpowering. Despite the British English accent, it is very easy and comfortable to read.
The book is about 200 pages, quickly draws us in to the narration as soon as we start. But this is definitely not a fast read. The story opens up into multiple layers. And hence requires a slow read to savour the flavour.
The Context of the story is Thailand in the 1960s, when farmland slowly started emerging from the forest. It is also a period when people are changing from peasants to workers. This is also the period when the Thai society was a jumbled mixture of hunter-gatherers, later agriculturalists, and those who were lost in the urbanization of the industrial revolution. The main protagonist of the story is Luang Paw Tien, a Buddhist monk living in the village of Praeknamdang, which lies along the forest in the east, where changes are slow to reach. He lives through the changes that transforms the village. That experience of living a lifetime through that change also transforms him into a storyteller.
Initially, the narration eases us into the book with the pleasurable art of Storytelling. That way, it binds us closely to Tien. Using that intimacy the narration slowly absorbs us into Tien’s story. The writing, which initially captures the beauty of the forest, slowly drags us into the darker depths soundlessly & suddenly through an unseen stalking tiger.
As the times progresses, he slowly presents us with his life struggles, and through them also presents the impact on the society and landscape. Our gaze, which initially opens with a kind of wonder at the narrator Tien, makes us cry, laugh and later also tremble with him. He presents both the grandeur and terror of a forest.
Tigers, peacocks, and snakes play an important role in Thai culture. We see them a lot in their traditional dances. Saneh also uses them in his story in a similar manner.

ช็อคแดกตอนสุดท้าย แต่ทั้งมวลทั้งเล่มนี้ถ้าให้พูดเหมือนดูสารคดีสัตว์ป่า ดูเนชั่นแนลจีโอกราฟิกเวอร์ชันคนไทย ป่าไทย ได้ยินเสียงนกร้อง ได้ยินเสียงช้างเล่นน้ำ ได้ยินเสียงกรอบแกรบ เหยียบใบไม้ของสัตว์หรือคนสักตัว ได้เล่นกับวัว ได้ไปล่าจระเข้ได้ไปดูจับเสือ เสมือนได้เห็นกับตา คนอะไรเขียนเรื่องอะไรได้สมจริงและสร้างภาพในหัวคนอ่านได้มากขนาดนี้
เราคิดเอาเองว่าการอ่าน "เจ้าการะเกด" นี่อ่านได้หลายระดับ อ่านแบบตีความก็ได้ อ่านแบบนั่งฟังหลวงพ่อเทียนเล่าตำนานพื้นบ้านก็ได้ อ่านแบบคนรักป่ารักเขาที่โดนสังคมเมืองเบียด ธรรมชาติโดนทำร้ายก็ยังไหว ส่วนตัวไม่ไปถึงขั้นถอดความเพราะอ่านแกเล่าไปเรื่อยขนาดนี้ก็สนุกเหมือนได้ไปนั่งก่อกองไฟ ปิ้งข้าวหลามในฤดูหนาว ฟังตำนานไร้เป้าประสงค์แต่ข้นปร่าไปด้วยความทรงจำและภูมิปัญญาของพระเฒ่าเทียนที่ไม่รู้แกเล่าจริงเท็จขนาดไหน แต่ใครจะสนเพราะมันสนุกจนไม่อยากหายไปจากหน้าประวัติศาสตร์ต่างหาก
จริงๆ เจ้าการะเกดมาหน้าที่ 100 จาก 170 เพราะงั้นถ้าถามว่าทำไมหนังสือเจ้าการะเกดไม่ชื่อหนังสือ ควันเทียน (ขอร้อง ใครจะไปซื้อวะ) ต้องอ่านจนจบถึงจะเข้าใจ หนังสือสนุกมาก อ่านเหนื่อยมาก มิตรสหายบอกอ่านแบบคนดำร้องแรปดิ (จริงๆ แค่ร้องแรปเฉยๆ ใส่ดำเอง) ก็เออ ดีขึ้น แต่ในหัวมันเป็นภาพงานสารคดีแบบช่วงซากาโมโต้ ริวอิจิเดินไปเก็บเสียงต่างๆ ในป่าแทน ไอ้ชิบหาย เลยอ่านช้าเป็นเต่าคลานกินผักบุ้ง
ตลอดเวลาที่อ่านมักจะคิดถึงยาย กับบ้านบนเขาที่ยายปลูกไว้ใกล้ๆ วัด ยายชอบเล่าให้ฟังว่าวันดีคืนดีไปเก็บเห็ดจะเจอช้างป่าต้องรีบหลบ (ตลกสัดๆ แต่คิดว่าเจอจริงๆ คงไม่ตลก) หรือตำนานผีๆ สางๆ ว่าเจออะไรบ้าง ตอนฟังก็ไม่รู้หรอกจริงไม่จริง แต่มันก็สนุกแบบขำๆ ดี
แต่นั่นแหละ นี่อ่านแดนอรัญทุกรอบ เป็นไข้ไปเสียชิบสองรอบ (ไม่เกี่ยวกัน แค่เป็นความบังเอิญเฉยๆ) ตอนอ่านอสรพิษก็ไข้ขึ้น ภาพเบลอๆ มัวๆ อ่านเจ้ากระเกดก็ไข้ขึ้น ตาร้อนๆ เหมือนวิญญาณสมิงเข้าสิง เห้อม บ้าบอ คนมันอิน

จริงๆ เจ้าการะเกดมาหน้าที่ 100 จาก 170 เพราะงั้นถ้าถามว่าทำไมหนังสือเจ้าการะเกดไม่ชื่อหนังสือ ควันเทียน (ขอร้อง ใครจะไปซื้อวะ) ต้องอ่านจนจบถึงจะเข้าใจ หนังสือสนุกมาก อ่านเหนื่อยมาก มิตรสหายบอกอ่านแบบคนดำร้องแรปดิ (จริงๆ แค่ร้องแรปเฉยๆ ใส่ดำเอง) ก็เออ ดีขึ้น แต่ในหัวมันเป็นภาพงานสารคดีแบบช่วงซากาโมโต้ ริวอิจิเดินไปเก็บเสียงต่างๆ ในป่าแทน ไอ้ชิบหาย เลยอ่านช้าเป็นเต่าคลานกินผักบุ้ง
ตลอดเวลาที่อ่านมักจะคิดถึงยาย กับบ้านบนเขาที่ยายปลูกไว้ใกล้ๆ วัด ยายชอบเล่าให้ฟังว่าวันดีคืนดีไปเก็บเห็ดจะเจอช้างป่าต้องรีบหลบ (ตลกสัดๆ แต่คิดว่าเจอจริงๆ คงไม่ตลก) หรือตำนานผีๆ สางๆ ว่าเจออะไรบ้าง ตอนฟังก็ไม่รู้หรอกจริงไม่จริง แต่มันก็สนุกแบบขำๆ ดี
แต่นั่นแหละ นี่อ่านแดนอรัญทุกรอบ เป็นไข้ไปเสียชิบสองรอบ (ไม่เกี่ยวกัน แค่เป็นความบังเอิญเฉยๆ) ตอนอ่านอสรพิษก็ไข้ขึ้น ภาพเบลอๆ มัวๆ อ่านเจ้ากระเกดก็ไข้ขึ้น ตาร้อนๆ เหมือนวิญญาณสมิงเข้าสิง เห้อม บ้าบอ คนมันอิน

This is a charming fictional memoir told by a ninety year old monk that reads like a piece of non-fiction. Luang Paw Tien shares anecdotes of jungle life in Thailand before his village’s transition to large-scale farming and urban development; these he relates verbally to the gathered children of the village.
His favourite tales are from his childhood, and bring out in him a sort of childhood innocence, when otherwise the community sees him as an eccentric.
The characters that populate the stories he tells are boars, snakes, monkeys, elephants, crocodiles, and tigers. Into his own collection of experiences there is an undercurrent of folklore, of traditonal belief, a smattering of the fantastical, a faint aroma of the supernatural.

June 23, 2025I tried and tried. I got 5 pages in and started begging for paragraphs. I got 20 pages in and decided maybe it wasn’t the right time, so I put it down and read a 700 page fantasy book. I read 20 more pages and could barely force myself to focus on it.
I put it down at 50 intending to DNF it. I see every review mention that it picks up at page 60, so I go back. At page 70 I start skimming again, totally unable to keep my focus. I find it painfully boring. I skimmed the rest. This style does not work for me at all.

The Understory delves into the complexities of human relationships, the impact of modernisation on traditional ways of life, and the enduring power of nature. As the characters navigate love, loss, and betrayal, they are forced to confront their own desires and fears in the face of inevitable change. I approached the book with excitement but was ultimately disappointed upon reading it. While the concept of the story was promising, the execution fell short. It alternated between captivating descriptions of the jungle landscape and its inhabitants and tedious prose, which made the pacing inconsistent and hindered the overall flow of the narrative. More thorough editing could have potentially salvaged some of its shortcomings. It is possible that the translation didn't fully capture the essence of the original Thai text, contributing to the disconnect. Despite these drawbacks, I am glad I persevered and completed the book, though it did drag me into a slump. The ending, while somewhat predictable, still left me reeling.

This was a tough book. Constantly shifting from beautiful prose that captured the environment and the natural world, to then becoming dense with list-like narrative that dragged, to then being interrupted with true brutal depictions of a harsh reality where a hunter combats the cruelty of predation with a pure human cruelty which was quite hard to read. I don’t really know how I feel about this one.

Un racconto narrato accanto ad un fuoco, a dei bambini. Un racconto che profuma di mito, che rimanda a storie più semplici, che si raccontano a voce.
Ma è anche un racconto simile ad altri, un racconto dell’uomo contro la natura. In questo ricorda molto “Un viejo que leía novelas de amor” di Sepulveda, dove ritorna la figura della Tigre come raffigurazione fisica della Natura in opposizione all’Uomo (nell’opera del cileno quello del confronto con la tigre non è l’unico tema, mentre in quest’opera ha decisamente un peso centrale).
È quindi una copia dell’opera di Sepulveda? Direi di no.
Innanzitutto, questo è un racconto “generazionale”: in Sepulveda il rapporto con la Natura/Tigre è possibile nel presente anche se solo per poche persone, mentre nell’opera di Sangsuk questo rapporto (che è comunque conflittuale) è ormai perso e può solo essere raccontato coniugando al passato; Il vecchio monaco lo racconta ad una generazione che ormai non conosce più la giungla come prima.
Poi nel racconto di Sepulveda mi era sempre parso che vi fosse una scissione profonda tra il Pueblo (e quindi dalla Società) e la Giungla (e quindi dalla Natura): seppur questa scissione venisse sconvolta dalle incursioni della Tigre, alla fin fine una volta che si entrava nella Giungla non si trovavano molti appigli per rientrare nell’universo dell’uomo (al massimo qualche oggetto che si trovava nella capanna del vecchio o in altri posti).
In “Una storia vecchia come la pioggia”, invece, non ci sono molti riferimenti diretti alla Società (se si esclude una iniziale disamina delle varie personalità del paese vicino al luogo delle vicende): il protagonista ed i suoi parenti vivono dentro la foresta, in uno spiazzo coltivato. Sono circondati dalla Natura e da essa, di fatto, non escono mai. Non esiste quindi una Società contemporanea, il legame con l’umanità rimane vivo solo tramite la Famiglia (ed infatti quando questa inizia a cedere, verso la fine, la Natura prende il sopravvento).
Ci sarebbe da chiedersi, dato che la Famiglia racchiude il senso di Umanità, cosa significhi il fatto che le uniche forme famigliari che ci vengono presentate siano nel passato: non si vedono molto i genitori dei bambini, il monaco è solo….forse un segnale che anche l’Umanità è stata persa? Non solo il legame con la Natura?
Ma alla fin fine forse la perdita di tale legame ha meno valore di quanto ne avesse per il vecchio di Sepulveda….in quest’opera di Sangsuk la Natura/Tigre non è meno folle della Società/Famiglia. Alla fine entrambe si risolvono nel nulla.

Didn’t expect there to be so much tenderness and (tender) humour, during the first half at least, which with its rhizomatic non-structure and folkloric storytelling weaves an endearing tale of tales, of a land across times.

In the small village of Praeknamdang lives Luang Paw Tien, the abbot of the temple and a beloved storyteller. Having lived for so long his tales are wondrous and exciting, from a time before the taming of the jungle and the development of the area. But the stories that captivate the village children the most are those about cunning tigers, and Luang Paw Tien knows a lot about tigers.
Absorbing and bucolic, it took me a little to get into due to its format of long rambling storytelling which, ironically, ended up being what captivated my attention. It's a book about traditions, about the wild world before urban growth and the way living in those conditions shapes imagination.
To the serious minded adults, he was a teller of tall tales who breached the precept concerning monks and untruthful speech, but to the children he was a trove of magical stories.

This took about half the book for me to get into it, but it ended up being a very compelling story of a man vs tiger, nature vs agrarian society in rural Thailand. A very breathless pace to the writing style.

What a story! I am not sure if it was meant to be so, but I found pieces of it just beyond hilarious. The humor, the tragedy, the simplicity of it all absolutely overtook my heart. Warmly recommended ! ❤️

Though I loved the story of Luang Paw Tieng’s life, I wish they hadn’t fleshed out so much of the village at first. I felt invested in its characters and wanted to know about them, so the more I read about his life, my mind kept wandering to the beginning of the book.
I’m not sure if this is a part of Thai literature or not, but the lack of paragraph breaks made it hard to read too much in one sitting, despite being engrossed in the story.
Despite these things though, I loved the book and highly recommend it, especially for anyone that is interested in learning a little bit more about Thailand.

ไม่ค่อยได้อ่านงานของนักเขียนไทยมากมาย เล่มนี้เหมือนก่อนอ่านคนชมเยอะ เลยผิดหวังนิดหน่อยน่าจะเพราะหวังเยอะเกิน อ่านตอนแรก ๆ นึกถึงพาร์ตนึงใน จุติ ของ อุทิศ เหมะมูล การเล่าเรื่องไปเรื่อย ๆ ของผู้เฒ่าผู้แก่ ผสมเรื่องราวธรรมชาติและความเหนือจริง ความสนุกส่วนตัวของเราจะมาจากการเจอคำไทยที่ไม่ค่อยเจอ แล้วเอาไปถามพ่อแม่หรือยายมากกว่า (อ่าว) พอได้ฟังคนอื่นพูดถึงเล่มนี้ (แนวคิดว่าเรื่องเล่าเป็นการ cope อย่างนึงก็น่าสนใจมาก) เลยทำให้นึกเรื่องของความทรงจำ เรื่องเล่าของยายตนเองที่รางเลือน ซึ่งไอ้ความรางเลือน จำไม่ค่อยได้นี่แหละทำให้เกิดเป็นเรื่องราวต่าง ๆ เสริมแต่งต่อไปอีก นึกถึงบันทึกของทวดที่น่าเบื่อมาก เพราะเขียนแต่สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นในแต่ละวัน ๆ และความฝัน นึกถึงเวลาเราซักไซ้ถามยายถึงเรื่องในอดีต ซึ่งจะไม่ค่อยได้อะไรมาก แม้เราจะตีความและใช้วิธีการถามนำก็ตาม เลยเข้าใจว่า อ่อ พวกเขาไม่ได้เป็นนักเล่าเรื่องแบบนั้น 555555

So thankful I was able to find this book while visiting Thailand last summer. The story is as rich and vibrant as the jungle setting. I was enthralled by this novel.

Nella Thailandia rurale degli anni sessanta, ancora segnata dalla tradizione, uno dei passatempi principali è radunarsi la sera ad ascoltare le storie di Tien, un saggio monaco buddista locale.
A farla da padrona ci sono delle storie in cui la natura e gli animali sono delle presenze minacciose e anche fantastiche. Fra tutte le tigri, che influenzano direttamente il destino degli uomini e di intere famiglie.
La narrazione è ben strutturata e segue un andamento scorrevole che si rifà al racconto orale.
A farla da padrona ci sono delle storie in cui la natura e gli animali sono delle presenze minacciose e anche fantastiche. Fra tutte le tigri, che influenzano direttamente il destino degli uomini e di intere famiglie.
La narrazione è ben strutturata e segue un andamento scorrevole che si rifà al racconto orale.

This was so pleasurabe, all my senses were engaged, everything so vivid: the smell of ylang yang, the sweetness of mango, the sounds of animals I had never heard of, the humid heat of the jungle. I was in Praeknamdang to feel taste hear see all of it. I'm the child by the fire. I'm the old man searching for peace.
Such unique masterful storytelling, I found myself gasping, smiling, crying. So glad to have picked this up as my first book of the year.

An elderly monk tells stories from his life to the kids living in a small [and fictitious] Thai village. This is one of those works of literary fiction that you have to give a chance. The pacing, the subject matter, and the approach of the first part of the book is such that anyone without an intense interest in Thai village life or the thoughts of a Thai monk on the state of Buddhism in India (almost non-existent) will find it a bit of a slog. However, as the story shifts to the young man's (pre-monk) life, adolescence through life as a newly married man expecting his first child, it becomes an intensely gripping story.
In the early parts, there's a lot of violation of that old chestnut, "show, don't tell" and -- like much literary fiction -- it's not clear that there will be a story (versus exposition, character development, and description of events of a non-story like nature.) However, this transitions into the evocative story of how the narrator came to be a monk after a tragic farming householder experience. I can't even give an accurate description of how far in I think the book makes this swing because my reading pace in the second part was so much quicker and more compelled than early on.
The book has hints of supernatural elements in it but can be read as realism in an environment of intense superstition.
I'd highly recommend this book for those who enjoy literature in translation. Give it a chance to win you over. It will, soon enough.

Took a while to get into with the sort of waffle-y writing style (I guess that's the point) but by the end I was with them in the jungle in the rain listening out for the roar of a tiger. Great ending!

Vorrei visitare ogni dove, anche l’angolo più recondito del nostro mondo, ma non posso... Per fortuna esistono i libri. Esistono autrici e autori capaci di portarci in ogni luogo, di catapultarci, con la sola scrittura, in tradizioni e culture diverse, in credenze tramandate spesso solo dal racconto orale. Autrici e autori che lasciano una traccia scritta di quel racconto orale, altrimenti destinato a disperdersi. Saneh Sangsuk è certamente uno di loro. Mi sono affidato a lui per esplorare la giungla tailandese, al suo realismo magico, per scoprirne i segreti. Una storia vecchia come la pioggia, pubblicato da Utopia Editore, non è solo un racconto affascinante: è una piccola perla che svela il suo splendore attraverso la prosa. Inoltrandomi tra le righe mi sono sentito un bambino seduto in cerchio davanti al fuoco insieme ai bambini del villaggio Phraek Nam Daeng. Come loro sono rimasto stregato dalle parole echeggiate dal vecchio reverendo monaco buddista Tien difronte alle fiamme. Come loro, sono stato catturato dalle sue storie, a volte divertenti, a volte tristi e volte spaventose, “spesso erano piene di magia e forze soprannaturali. Erano pensate come un puro, frivolo intrattenimento, e in genere non finivano con una morale” dice la voce narrante.
Tien, un monaco atipico che un tempo fu cacciatore, racconta il suo rapporto con gli animali della foresta e soprattutto parla delle tigri… Della tigre che lo ha reso orfano di mamma… Della caccia a quella tigre… Del sottile confine tra cacciatore e preda.
Saneh Sangsuk con questa splendida opera offre una visione asiatica del mondo e del tempo. Tempo calcolato sul calendario buddista. Ma questo romanzo è molto altro. Saneh Sangsuk non si limita a farsi portatore di quel racconto orale destinato a cadere nell’oblio, con il ritmo e l’energia della sua prosa, il flusso delle sue parole, ci proietta in una Tailandia vittima della devastazione ambientale imposta dalla modernizzazione. Parla di quella giungla e di quegli animali che stanno perdendo il diritto alla propria esistenza, dei villaggi contadini distrutti e dei bambini, delle giovani generazioni che non potranno più ascoltare le storie di un monaco intorno a un fuoco perché costretti a fuggire da quei luoghi… dai loro luoghi.
Cosa aggiungere? Mi ha in qualche modo ricordato - probabilmente per gli elementi magici, per il protagonismo della natura, per la qualità e la liricità della prosa che li accomuna - un altro bellissimo romanzo: Le confessioni della leonessa di Mia Couto. Ma di quest’opera ve ne parlerò in un altro momento, forse…
