FISA Agents #2

Refractions Of Light

Rate this book
Our eyes are broken windows capable of using light to bring truth into focus.

Some months ago, a ruthless assassin and a British secret agent met on a dark street in Danger City. One saved the other and, from this, new alliances were formed that have the potential to change everything.

Jack Roth is caught in the liminal space between hero and villain, his every decision planted firmly in the grey.

Leo Snow is a good man still desperately trying to make the right choices in a world that constantly forces him to question what that really means.

Now, both men have been sent out on a rescue mission that will test the endurance of their new partnership, and the depth of their feelings for one another, as the past comes calling and the future casts shadows neither can escape.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

NOTES:
-This book is set in an alternate universe to the Liquid Onyx series (so a few things seem familiar if you've read that series, but still very different).
-You need to read the first book in this series to understand what is going on in this book (do NOT skip book 1).
-This story ends on a cliffhanger (like end of TV season cliffhanger).

This book certainly builds on Leo and Jack's partnership (relationship?). Let's face it, if I was friends with Leo, I'd be staging an intervention over his involvement with Jack. But instead I'm just going to devour each page of their strange (and honestly co-dependent) obsession with each other. There are certainly plenty of twists in this book (good, bad, and crazy!). I also felt like we got to see a lot more of what makes Jack who he is.

Trying my best not to spoil the ending, but I'm seriously thinking this author enjoys torturing her readers as much as she does her characters. Really, really hoping it's not going to be too long of a wait until the next book comes out!

Reviewer note: I read this book after reading book 3 of Liquid Onyx. If you've been reading the Liquid Onyx books (and especially if you've read book 3), you'll understand that having books with almost the same characters, but not quite can make for an odd read. I actually (at least at this point) like the FISA books a bit more for the character development and pacing of the story.

Jack Roth is now a FISA agent but his upbringing keeps his actions in the grey. Leo Snow tries hard to be a good person and works on keeping Jack grounded, but the decisions they make really trouble him at times. Now the two men are on a rescue mission that will really test them and in ways they may affect their future together as partners and more.

These stories are getting more and more intense and captivating. Surprises and twists are common and many take you completely by surprise. These two together face many obstacles and must learn to work together to survive especially with the coming surprises and actions that happened in the end. The next book must come quickly and I cannot wait to see how the ending is resolved next.

This world built by BL Jones is unique and well done. The plots are intriguing and we need FISA to ensure that there is world left for others. The characters in the other series, especially Liquid Onyx, appear throughout the book either in person or by reference, making the reading richer. These books are great for those of us who want some darkness in their stories at times.

I received a complimentary ARC of this book and voluntarily reviewed it to my pleasure. The opinions are my own

After a new alliance formed something clicked, something unbreakable, after all when your life is saved by another there is bound to be a bond formed. This one is different though, this is a bond between an assassin and a secret agent, between two men with powers beyond those that any human should have. And they are fighting enemies who are equally strong and powerful.

Sent out on a mission to pull off a rescue, their limits are about to be tested. How will they work together in the field ~ Jack knows he is both hero and villain, questioning every decision he makes... Leo is a good man but for every decision he makes he feels that the world they are living in is making him question himself. Can two people who question their every move work together, can they make the right calls when they need to, can they accept themselves and what they are capable of doing? Can they see that their feelings for one another are growing ever deeper and will they stay alive to find a future, together?

Another gripping sci-fi mm romance, the humour is dark, the romance builds slowly, the action is packed in. This story must be read after book 1 or you will have no idea what is happening and it very much picks up the pace!

Second in series (FISA Agents), must be read in order. Paranormal. Grumpy/sunshine. Established couple. Dual POV. Jack and Leo have been working together as partners for only a short time, but they have figured out how to do it well, and their current focus is the rescue of a fellow FISA agent that has been abducted by the evil Obsidian Inc. Jack is becoming even more possessive of Leo, unsure of how to be in a relationship with Leo, while Leo is braced for heartbreak knowing his feelings for Jack are growing stronger every day. Jack worries that Leo cannot accept his assassin ways and violent past, but Leo questions whether they can have a romantic relationship when Jack has never known love or caring from anyone other than his dead brother. I really enjoyed this second book as it focused on Jack and Leo’s building feelings, the struggle for them to communicate honestly, but the inability to let the other go, all while they are fighting bad guys and trying to complete their mission. There is a cliffhanger as the series continues, and I can’t wait to see what BL Jones has in store for Jack and Leo.

I am not normally a lover of "hero/villain" books but I am so glad I picked up the arcs for this series as I am loving it! This book is the second in series that do really need to be read in order. This series is about Jack and Leo who are recent partners fighting crime with a paranormal twist. It really delves into their feelings and gives us the story from both POV. Such great word building and character development as we watch their feelings for each other grow but they both have issues to deal with! Jack worries that Leo cannot accept his violent past and Leo questions Jack's capability to have a romantic relationship having only know love from his dead brother. They have to deal with all of this whilst trying to rescue a fellow agent from the bad guys! A great build up to the ending which did end on a cliffhanger leaving us avidly awaiting the next book to see what is in store for Jack and Leo.

This book is a continuation of the story begun in Shards of Hope. The first book was thrilling and completely pulled me in, and I dare say that this one is even better. It's a dark and violent world that our FISA agents inhabit, and I'm so glad they have each other to count on.
This installment is full of action, which is nearly non-stop. We get to enjoy some emotional (but not too tender, of course) moments between Jack and Leo as they continue to grow closer. Their connection is incredible. I could feel each man's concern, frustration, annoyance, and desire for the other. I absolutely love them!
I recommend this series to those who don't mind blood and gore. The story is fantastic, and my only complaint is that I have to wait to see how the oh-so-shocking cliffhanger is resolved. I will be first in line for the next installment, which can't get here soon enough. I'm ready for more Jack and Leo!

It's not easy falling for an assassin, but FISA agent Leo Snow has caught feelings for Jack Roth. And though he's trying to push Leo away, Jack returns them. They're sent on a mission to rescue Rohan Sathe, and it just highlights their differences. They also need to stop OI which has developed a world devastating weapon.
Leo is afraid to commit and Jack doesn't think Leo will ever accept his gray morality. They ping pong between angry mauling of each other and tender lovemaking, it's a tad annoying. They are both strong MCs, the world building continues. It's well written. There's off and on page violence, and lots of pining and angst from the characters.
I have not gotten to read the series prior, but had no problems keeping up. The characters get a HFN and the book ends on a cliffhanger. Next book, sometime next year. Can't wait.

This is the second book in the series, so a gentle note here that you’ll want to start at the beginning, if you haven’t already. This installment of Jack and Leo’s story has plenty to recommend it: there’s an intensity to almost every moment that should feel overwhelming but instead is oddly invigorating. There’s plenty of on-point banter, high emotion, wit, chemistry, and the plot, which I won’t spoil because it deserves to be experienced on its own terms, just keeps coming. The supporting characters are super interesting in their own right, and the tl;dr version of my review would be that this book is easy to pick up and hard to put down.

More of Jack and Leo

Warning this book ends with a cliffhanger.
And what a cliffhanger it is in a very exciting story. More problems with Obsidian Inc. and Liquid Onyx and supers and surprises. The relationship between Leo and Jack develops between fraught assignments and this volume is definitely higher heat than the first one. The idea of something being injected into a person which gives them super powers isn’t a new one but I really like the way that BL Jones is taking this story and how gritty and real it seems. The next volume “Brothers of Redemption” is listed as due to come out on September 23, 2024 but I hope that Jones is inspired and manages to get the book out sooner because I really enjoy this series.

Good read and follow up

I'll be honest this second in the series was not as thrilling as the first for some reason. I love the two MC'S.......from Leo's snarky comments to Jack's flippancy.
I guess the main issue was the over description of the two's emotions. Both characters describe themselves and their perceptions of each other and as it is a two person first perspective it can get a little tiresome.
I think this hindered the pace of the book. For some 380+ pages, for only two main things to have happened (actually the big reveal we saw coming a mile away too), it just felt drawn out rather than fast paced as the first book was.
The cliff hanger at the end leaves me hungering for more though......

Jack and Leo are back in this second book of the FISA agents series. I loved the first one, and this is even better, since the relashionship between the two main characters grows and becomes stronger.
They both care about each other, even though they have a lot of insecurities, because Leo is kind of afraid of the force of his feelings for Jack, and Jack is afraid Leo would never accept his past as an assassin.
Everything happens while they are on a mission together and they have to face the “bad guys” of the story.
I was really hooked by this second book, as well as I was by the first one. Now I’m looking forward to the third, since everything ended with a cliffhanger.

An absolutely gripping continuation of an already brilliant series! Refractions of Light picks up where book one left off, and somehow, it’s even better.

The chemistry between Jack and Leo continues to burn with intensity—complex, raw, and laced with emotional depth. Jack’s moral ambiguity paired with Leo’s relentless hope makes for a pairing that’s as compelling as it is unpredictable. Their bond is tested through every twist and turn of their new mission, and the emotional tension is just as sharp as the action.

I enjoyed this book and would doubtless have enjoyed it more if I'd reread book one first. As it was, having just read the third Liquid Onyx book, I was mildly confused regarding the timeline.

As usual, this wasn't a standard romance structure—but there was a lot more romance in this than in book one (along with plenty of action). I continue to be interested in Jack and Leo's relationship and will be eager to see where it goes in book three.

My thanks to the author for an advance copy of this book.

Exciting adventure! Jack walks a fine line between right and wrong. Leo tries to stay on the right side but his world forces him to question which is indeed the right side. They partner on a rescue mission that challenges who they are individually, who they are as partners, who they may be becoming and their core beliefs. As good as they are, nothing goes smoothly. We have twists, turns and questions. Riveting, continuing story. Great flow, smart and fresh back and forth. I am enjoying the saga. Nicely done! Wow! What a wild, intense ride that was! I absolutely loved this second, snarky installment following Jack and Leo. This second journey for them starts out with the pair looking for Rohan, their mission is to rescue him. This takes us to someone from Jack’s past and leads to some explosive emotions for the two agents. There is a lot of stuff that happens in this book. It is full of intense, high emotions and loads and loads of snarky, banter. These two face lots of obstacles in their mission to rescue Rohan. And then of course comes the blindsiding, the cliffhanger that just left me absolutely floored. Don’t get me wrong, I saw part of it coming but some other things caught me unaware and left my jaw hanging, my heart racing and me dying for the next part! There is slightly more heat and intimacy in this saga of the journey, these two are really leaning into one another. I love the small touches and the intimacy forming between them. The sexy scenes were hot and full of a connection these two have forged in the past month. The writing was superb, the side characters full of snark, just like our main couple. Jack and Leo are a match made in an evil lab full of super villain cackling and acerbic wit.

Refractions Of Light is the second book in the FISA Agents series. It is better if you read this series in order. In this story Jack and Leo are sent out on a rescue mission, again there’s plenty of action, good world building and great characters and a test to both their personal and professional relationship. The story does end on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

4.5 stars. The first part was a bit unsettling, having read Drowning in Danger not long beforehand where something difficult happened to a character that had not happened to said character here (multiple series). For the rest the action and motives of the MCs and the others just keep getting better. Unexpected plot twists and a really strong cliffhanger finish. Can't wait to find out what happens next.

The next instalment of this story has a bit more spice and other stuff but still hasn’t reached its conclusion, so once more I wait.

Mind the TW and whatnot. I’d recommend if you like these tropes.

‘If I were a hero. If I were a good man. I'd leave without him and never look back. I'd sacrifice everything we are or could be to save him. Leo deserves that. Leo deserves a good man who would let him go. I am not a good man. Never pretended otherwise. In stories, it's always the hero who gets the girl. In reality, though, maybe it takes a villain to keep the boy.’

Leo has his hands full with partner and love interest Jack. But this is not a romance. This is another BL Jones masterpiece!

FISA Agents series, book 2, places Jack and Leo together again, continuing to attempt to thwart villains who have kidnapped a fellow FISA. agent. Jack’s background as a Liquid Onyx super being, and as a past assassin for OI, continue to create conflicts between Leo’s ‘goodness’ and Jack’s, at times, lack of humanity.

This conflict creates steamy tension between two i tricate characters who feel more than they can sometimes handle.
