I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

New Camp Cookbook: On the Trail is a great, creative cookbook/recipe book for people who love to hike. Much of the book is based on using dehydrated ingredients for convenience and to make carting the ingredients around in a backpack easier. The recipes include photographs that do look quite appetising of the finished meals, and each recipe has full clear instructions. I imagine lots of these recipes will taste amazing after a day of hiking out in the open, and the book even includes drinks recipes, too.

Let's hit the trail with this trusty guide for packing yummy meals, snacks, and even cocktails! I wish I'd had this fun creative guide before moving to Colorado, so our hikes and camping in the glorious mountains would have been much more delicious. There are 50+ recipes for different types of trail mix, flask cocktails, easy to fix wraps, and desserts such as wild berry crumble, with pretty color photos and much much more. Recommended!

3.5 stars rounded up. Hits shelves on July 1st! I’ve only been camping a few times in my life. This cookbook didn’t have a lot of the camping favorites, which might be a good thing because if you’re buying this, you’re not looking to be told about recipes you already know.

There’s a good amount of trail mixes referenced which would honestly be so devastating to eat while vacationing. That’s just a personal preference though. If you’re looking for unique trail mixes, a camping cliche, there really unique combos here!

The premixed cocktails are so genius! Not that camping and cocktails have to go together, but if that’s your vibe this book had some tasty sounding, intricate recipes.

The dinners didn’t really appeal to me, there’s a few I would maybe consider — like fried rice, but the breakfasts were all very cool! There’s something for everyone in this cookbook and I think it would make a cool gift for someone in your life who regularly camps. It’s a cute decorative bookshelf piece too.

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for an ARC of this cookbook in exchange for an honest review.

This is a nice camping cookbook, though it wasn’t a great fit for me. There are lots of cocktail recipes, which makes sense because the author has also written a camping cocktail book. She mentions foraging but doesn’t include any recipes that use foraged ingredients. The recipes are generally dehydrated things you can assemble, lightweight to carry in a backpack. We camp a lot but we tent camp and drive to the site with a cooler or two, so we can use more fresh ingredients like potatoes, corn on the cob, fish, beans, fresh fruit and so on. Her recipes that involve things like eggs and beans use dehydrated versions, which I am just not interested in. She also uses things like packets of lemon juice where I would just bring a lemon. I did like her instant falafel recipe, but I don’t think there were any other recipes that particularly inspired me. There are photos for just about every recipe, which is always a plus. There is no nutritional information and the recipes are somewhat carb heavy though they do sometimes work in nuts, dehydrated beans and pouches of salmon or tuna.

I read a temporary digital version of this book for review.

As anyone who follows me on the socials knows, I like to hike and we go on a few multi-day hikes each year. Last time we were out on the trail we met some very experiences hikers who gave us some tips about lunches, and had a much yummier time on our most recent hike. We still use "just add boiling water and wait ten minutes" dinners - it's just easier, if not better, so I was interested to read this book. Emily certainly understands about hike in (car free) camping and what is practical to take with you. This beautifully presented and photographed book contains a lot of inspiration and a great deal of it it is practical as well. Things like different types of trail mix and alternative lunches. Some of it is a bit odd - when I'm carrying everything I need on my back, I'm not bringing cocktails -although we have been known to carry whiskey with us, but that's more efficient than long drinks. This is a very pretty book, with lovely photos and chatty helpful commentary. This book hasn't yet motivated me away from my basic approach to camp-food, but it has given me some food for thought.

The “New Camp Cookbook On The Trail: Easy-to-Pack Meals, Cocktails, and Snacks for Your Next Adventure” by Emily Vikre isn’t my usual cooking genre, but its recipes lived up to the subtitle. I’m not a hiker at all, but I have done very light camping. I found several snack recipes useful for my own vacation road trips, and picked up a few ideas for easy meals. I was surprised at the alcoholic concoctions and found them fascinating; I don’t know if I’d attempt any if I was a serious hiker or backpacker but they were fun to read. None of the ingredients or procedures looked difficult so I’d think this could be a valuable reference cookbook before hitting the trail. My only negative would be that the recipes don’t include nutritional info. I would think that snacks and meals would benefit from nutritionals especially protein and carbs. Overall, I found it entertaining and informative.

This is a very beautiful book and I hope it will inspire people to hike AND to eat well. I like a lot of the ideas in the book, especially the use of spices and salt, and the bulking up of soups. The last one is normally easy, unlike a lot of the other recipes. As it says on the cover, it's easy-to-pack meals, and unfortunately not always easy-to-prepare meals.
One thing that's not correct is the Norwegian "matpakke", as they do not put slices of bread face-to-face, they use "mellomleggspapir", a small sheet of paper to separate toppings from the next slice.

Handy to have.

As a hiker, I enjoyed new ideas for energy boosting snacks you can take or make with you on a hike. I liked the vegetarian shepherd's pie. Most of these recipes made perfect sense to me, except, no mixed cocktails on a hike or trail. No. Just no. Not for me.
Aside from that, its a recommend.

My experience in the military taught me that it is always a good idea to have some food around that is already prepared or very easy to prepare. I try to get new ideas to incorporate into my emergency kit (here in California earthquakes, wildfires and power outages are always a possibility). This is an excellent book written by someone who has lots of experience.

Even though my backpacking days are somewhat behind me, I enjoyed finding so many interesting (and even tasty) ideas for food to take on a camping or a road trip. Due to several food intolerances and allergies, it's not always easy to find something to go or easy to cook on a camping stove.
The recipes are easy to follow and I liked everything that I tried.

OK, But Better Alternatives on Amazon

This was an ok cookbook. Amazon has some much better camping cookbooks out there. This book was more focused on walk in remote camping meals (dried eggs, dried milk) versus site camping where you could have a cooler, etc.

I will more focused on some of the snack and granola recipes than the true dinner meals.

Nay - don't bother.

If you need to purchase a book for recipes to make powdered Arnie Palmers, just water pancakes and flask cocktails so that you can go camping, my honest advice would be that you need to stay home. The great outdoors will chew you up and probably wouldn't spit you back.

I felt this point was reinforced by the editors thinking the readers would be to dumb to grasp some cultural learning about lefse so they just jumped to using tortillas after the author tells you how Norwegian she is.

I received an ARC from Netgalley to help me prepare my honest review.
