Christmas in the Heartland is a heartwarming and often humorous holiday memoir from comedian and storyteller Dan Hughes. A self-professed Christmas historian, he shares with us stories of his holiday upbringing in the Midwest and how it shaped his formative and adult years while imparting little known details about the holiday itself and its observances. Did you know the celebration of Christmas was at one time outlawed here in this country. It’s true. If you have ever wondered why we put up evergreen trees in our living rooms during December or where Santa Claus really comes from then read on.If you are looking for a feel-good book to bring in the holiday spirit, then Christmas in the Heartland was written for you.
I too have all with speech impairment, and physical problems. Christmas is different for me,since I never married and had a family. I think too much at Christmas about the family members I've lost.I stopped believing in Santa when my Mom wrote on the on the tag Mom and Dad.,(maybe 8-10 yrs. old.)This past Christmas my oldest niece wrapped one of my presents and put on the wrapped present from Santa.Dan I never watched you too much on the Q. But I love your first 2 books.Keep on writing Dan.
I enjoyed the stories of Dan growing up and what life was like for him. Very relatable. I enjoyed some of the history but for me is was too much history, though admittedly I did learn things I never knew before. I looked at the photo on the cover over and over and that brown spot bugged me on the roof, thought maybe it was a pinecone. Well, you find out toward the end what it was, not sure how I felt about that.
I was a fan of Dan Hughes when he was a QVC host but now I'm an even bigger fan of Dan Hughes, author . Christmas in the Heartland is his personal story but the charm and sweetness resonates with those of us who have been blessed with loving childhoods.
Sweet book primarily based on the holiday memories of the author. An easy read. This is my first book by Dan Hughes and won't be my last. I enjoyed it very much and it brought back some happy Christmas memories of my own.
As a fellow Midwesterner and being of a certain “age,” I can relate to many of the heartwarming stories told by Dan. So glad you are enjoying much success after QVC’s poor decisions.
