sugar

Everyone knows sugar isn’t a healthy addition to the modern diet. This book serves to emphasize this fact and help the reader gain control over cravings and impulses with stories, encouragement, humor, and medical information. It doesn’t hit the reader over the head with too much formal jargon about diabetes, heart disease, etc. - you can get that in another book. This book focuses narrowly on getting the reader through 30 days without sugar - quite an accomplishment in America.

The book "Zero Sugar / One Month" by Becky Gillaspy serves as a comprehensive guide to eliminating added sugars from your diet for 30 days. The aim is to help readers lose weight, lower blood sugar, reduce cravings, and reset their metabolism, leading to overall better health and well-being. Sugar is prevalent in many foods and beverages, often contributing to weight gain, high blood sugar, cravings, and a slow metabolism. This book outlines a structured plan to eliminate added sugars for 30 days, offering a detailed daily guide to help readers achieve their health goals. The challenge is open to everyone, regardless of their current diet or health status. Before starting the challenge, readers are encouraged to set a start date and complete a Day 0 Self-Assessment. This involves recording their current weight, body fat percentage, BMI, and measuring the circumference of their chest, waist, hips, and limbs. Taking "before" photos can provide additional motivation.

-

Days 1-10: Setting the Ground Rules

The first ten days focus on establishing the basics:
- Avoid foods and drinks with sugar listed among the first three ingredients.
- Natural sugars from fruits, nuts, seeds, and yogurts are allowed in small amounts, but fruit juice is to be avoided.
- Noncaloric sweeteners like allulose, monk fruit, and stevia are permissible initially but should be reduced towards the end of the challenge.
- Use a calendar to track daily progress, marking each successful sugar-free day with a check mark, smiley face, or sticker.

Key Actions:
- Day 2: Set up your environment for success by removing sugary temptations from your home.
- Day 4: Prepare a "survival pack" with high-fat, low-carb snacks like beef sticks, raw nuts, or stuffed olives to curb hunger pangs.
- Day 7: Introduce "Stoppers" – activities or items that help prevent overeating or turning to sugary snacks, such as taking a walk, sipping hot tea, or brushing your teeth.

At the end of the first ten days, another self-assessment is conducted to track progress.

-

Days 11-20: Keep On Keeping On

This period emphasizes persistence and handling setbacks:
- Accept that slip-ups may occur but aim for quick recovery and continued adherence to the plan.
- Celebrate small victories to maintain motivation.

Key Actions:
- Day 12: Address Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs) by recognizing and replacing them with empowering thoughts or actions.
- Day 13: Have a "That Went Well Day," celebrating every small success to boost positivity.

Another self-assessment on Day 20 helps track further progress, reinforcing the achievements made so far.

-

Days 21-30: Preparing for Life Beyond the Challenge

The final phase focuses on preparing for sustainable habits post-challenge:
- Continue marking your progress on the calendar to stay motivated.
- Gradually eliminate noncaloric sweeteners and limit fruit intake to reset taste buds and establish a healthier baseline.

Key Actions:
- Day 24: Shed the crutches of noncaloric sweeteners and excessive fruit consumption.
- Day 27: Recognize that cravings will pass and focus on the benefits of abstaining from sugar.

The challenge concludes with a final self-assessment on Day 30, capturing weight, body fat percentage, BMI, and measurements to evaluate the full impact of the 30-day journey. Reviewing these changes and comparing photographs can be rewarding and motivating.

Frankly, it was easier to quit sugar than finish this book. The intentions were good and I get how some people might need motivation but this book was not my thing at all. This said, I did cut out shuvra and stuck with it and this book was definitely a motivation for me to start but I could get through it by sticking to the goal and not reading this book.

Helpful!

This book is very helpful and easy to follow. It's not a diet but a life changing plan of eating that is doable. I plan on doing for another 30 days to make it a lifestyle for me. Nothing else has worked for me to lose weight like this plan has helped in feeling better all around.
