Julie Cavallo Investigates #4

The Shady Chateau: a Provence Cozy Mystery

Rate this book
Beware, dressing up as Napoleon can get you killed!

Pillar of the local community Baron Gustave Cordes d’Auzon is holding a Napoleonic re-enactment at his chateau.
The event includes theatricals, war games, and costume balls.
That’s more than enough to entertain baker Julie Cavallo — and to distract her from pining for a tall, dark, and unsociable captain of the gendarmerie.
Unlike said captain, the guests at the chateau love conversing. Some are so flamboyant they outshine even Julie’s badass grandma Rose!

It’s all fun and cosplay… until the baron turns up dead.
Three unlikely culprits plead guilty.
Each gives the gendarmes a different motive.
Each insists they did it alone.

Who’s lying? And why?
And who really killed the baron?

If you’re a fan of Murder on the Orient Express and country house mysteries, then this book is for you!

Provence baker Julie Cavallo, her sous chef, and her grandma sign up for a Napoleonic re-enactment at a nearby chateau where the competition is fierce and can be deadly.

It seems that Julie’s grandma is not the only one who takes the Napoleonic re-enactments very serious and will challenge anyone to a duel over their roles in the re-enactment and/or their beliefs about Napoleon.

Everything is going well until the lord of the castle turns up dead. Never fear Julie Cavallo is on the case. She doesn’t have to look too far for the killer as she has plenty of suspects especially when she has three people confess to killing the lord of the castle.

So, now we have three suspects. Which of the three killed this dude? Did either one of them kill the lord of the castle? If so which one? What was their motive? Julie has the suspects now she just has to figure out which one did it.

I just love the Julie Cavallo Investigates mysteries and just as the first three books in the series The Shady Chateau is jammed packed with mystery and suspense that kept the pages turning.

The characters in The Shady Chateau are so well described that I could just see them all in my head in their costumes. I could see them standing around the crime scene as Julie tried to put all the pieces together.

Each and every scene is portrayed so vividly that I could see it all playing out in my head as if I was right there looking upon each and every scene and character as if I was a part of their world. I can’t wait to dive into the next book in the Julie Cavallo Investigates mysteries The Perils of Paris to see what mystery our favorite sleuth Julie Cavallo finds herself involved in.

I highly recommend The Shady Chateau to all mystery-solving crime fans! One-click your copy of The Shady Chateau as well as the rest of the Julie Cavallo Investigates mysteries today and help solve a mystery or two!

Pretensions to setting and style not pulled off.

I wanted to like this book. I had enjoyed cosy mysteries set in the South of France by a different author and this one had a paranormal twist so might have improved on that experience.

Imagine my disappointment with lack of execution of a reasonable idea. The setting in the South of France was a device that did not come off in getting either the scenery and location descriptions (with the exception of a shopping mall) or the characters anywhere near vivid or credible enough. There is a collection of character tropes with their quirks and foibles who become involved in solving the mystery. I did not warm to any of them so the internal conflicts attempted did not mean much to me. One reason for this lack of engagement is that everyone speaks with the same type of voice. I would typify it as mall American as spoken in many young person films set in that trope. That colloquialisms and slang of this sort are put into the mouths of what are meant to be French aristocrats and officials of that nation makes the whole text incredible. The French nation are proud of their language and culture and would be horrified at the mangling it receives within these pages.

Another negative is that the solution to the mystery appears by magic. The reader is not able to puzzle out or deduce the answer as it appears to the main character in a vision. There are pretensions to Agatha Christie in the author making a direct allusion to this better writer. This book is nothing like that doyen of crime fiction and this author is not only nowhere near the same league, she's on a totally different continent.

If you are looking for feather light entertainment without any critical or intellectual demand, then this text might suit you. I will not be spending any more of my time on others in this series.

I received a free advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Who Killed the Baron ? . . .

Julie Cavallo and her grandma sign up to join the Napoleonic re-enactment with theatricals, war games, and costume balls to make it more real.

The event is moving along splendidly until the Lord of the castle, Baron Gustave Cordes d’Auzon, is found dead, with blood puddled around his head from a bloody head wound. Capitaine Orfeuil begins to question her and notices how observant she is. She tells him about Gustave’s conversation with his sister, Evelyn, that she had overheard. Her sous chef, Eric Dol, also has additional information he heard before Julie got to the chateau. The coroner’s intern ran up and blurted that the victim had bruises and had been pushed hard against the wall and the fracture had caused his death… pending the autopsy, of course. Orfeuil was not happy that the chatty intern blurted out that news. The intern, loving the attention, starts answering the crowd’s speculations until the captain interrupts to stop him. And then the confessions to the crime started ...

Julie Cavallo jumps right into the mystery, but instead of having to find a suspect, she now has several who have confessed, each with a different motive! How will she determine which one is the real killer? Or is it none of these three?

I loved the different approach here of having the confessed possible murderers to investigate. Join Julie as she goes after the clues to discover the killer’s identity.

This is my first exposure to Ana T. Drew and her Julie Cavallo Investigates cozy mysteries. Although The Shady Chateau is book #4 in the series, it works quite well as a stand-alone story. I can't wait to read the first three books and number five is on its way soon.

I enjoyed the quirky characters and the uniqueness of the visions Julie has where she sees a dead person from the vantage point of a leaf or bit of dandruff. Such a fun twist.

There is nothing like a book trip to the French countryside to take your mind off your worries!

The pacing of the story keeps you turning the pages and you are through the book before you realize it. Since our amateur sleuth is a professional baker by trade, there are many references to delicious creations to make your mouth water.

Julie has a bit of hometown girl in her that makes her very relatable. The story has a few red herrings and many suspects. I certainly did NOT see that ending coming! But I don't want to give it away, so please grab a copy of the book today and experience this charming story for yourself.

I read the book through the Kindle Unlimited program and participated in a blog tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion. You can find more info on my website.

I've been enjoying Ana T. Davis's Julie Cavallo Investigates series and like each subsequent installment better than the last. What I really got a kick out of with Shady Chateau was how much of an old school Agatha Christie vibe I got out of it.

You have a group of people playing dress-up and doing reenactments at an old chateau in the South of France when the host ends up murdered. A few people confess, though they are rather unbelieveable, and fingers point in all kinds of directions. The suspect list keeps changing as new information is revealed. Plenty of twists keep you engrossed in this quick cozy mystery and the identity of the true killer may surprise you.

It really is Agatha Christie with a contemporary twist (I'm still snickering over the "pink boudoir") and just the slightest touch of the paranormal/psychic. Your favorite other supporting characters return. We're still dancing around the gendarme romance. And the end provides some possible clues into the next installment, I think. I'll be eagerly awaiting that one so well.

Thank you to the author and Goddess Fish for my requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really love this book, it's fun, fast pace cozy mystery full of mystery, suspense, and humor with delightful characters, it's very entertaining, page turning cozy mystery that is hard to put down, the plot is unique filled with twists and turns that keeps you entertained as you try to figure out who is the real murderer. The story was excellent and reminded me of a modern Agatha Christie, who has always been one of my favorite authors. It was a little more serious and heart-wrenching at times than most current cozies, but so well written!

Julie has to find the murderer from amongst a roster of complicated suspects in a country chateau while chasing down multiple clues and red herrings. I was reading on with suspicions as to who did it but when the murderer was revealed, I was wrong, but it made sense and was such a good ending.

I read this book first and was able to follow along no problem, but I am happy that the whole series is available on Kindle Unlimited, so I plan to go back and read the rest. An excellent series that I am glad to have found.

Baron Gustav Cordes d’Auzon is hosting a Napoleenic re-enactment at his chateau, with all sorts of games and entertainment. Julie gets a call from a friend about 2 no-shows and half-price tickets and she and grandma decide to attend. It’s definitely an eclectic group of attendees, all real characters! When Gustav is found dead, three different people confess! Julie’s interest is piqued and she decides to investigate herself. There are so many apparent motives and hidden stories that it proves quite a task. I don’t think you’ll be able to solve this before the final end! A fun read and great mystery. Really enjoyed this next book in the Julie Cavallo series. This series is set in the South of France and focuses on baker, Julie, and her friends and family. Together FERJ investigates murders and their ability to solve them is assisted by Julie’s visions. In this book we learn more about Julie and her family. The role play weekend she attends at a Chateau opens many questions and reveals secrets both of the suspects and Julie’s family. The real dilemma beyond who did it is why and whether the end justified the means. You will have to read to find out. If you like cozy mysteries with a bit of quirkiness and supernatural then you will enjoy this book

The Shady Chateau is a Provence Cozy Mystery by Ana T Drew. Julie and her Grandma, Rose, meet Eric for a weekend of all things Napoleon… food, dress, War re-enactments, a fun time. That is, until there is a murder. When the first murder occurs, it is FERJ (Flo, Rose, Eric and Julie) amateur sleuths! Julie often gets visions which she uses to guide the group. Of course, Capitaine Orferid is thrown into the murder mix and a very enjoyable cozy mystery is the result. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading another book by Ana T Drew. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

A cute cozy. Another baker, but yet this re-enactment idea makes it a little different than others. And of course, being in a castle adds to the story too. Julie has no trouble finding suspects but this one becomes mostly about who’s telling the truth and who is lying.

I think you’ll enjoy the costuming description as well as the little bit of humor which runs throughout. Actually, the red herrings swim throughout the story too. Easy to read and enjoyable.

Ana T. Drew has several books published. While there seem to be various series, all are under a series titled “Julie Cavallo Investigates” to help you find them.

This was an interesting cozy mystery. I loved the setting in an old chateau in France. Julie was a smart woman with a touch of the supernatural. I enjoyed the personal aspects of her life entwined with her natural nosiness. I was not quite prepared for the solution to the mystery, but I did not feel like I was left out of the loop in figuring out the truth. I really did enjoy this story and recommend it to those who like a quick cozy mystery to curl up with.

This is an enjoyable, light, cozy read involving baker Julia, her gran Rose, some costume reenactment fun, a murder and 3 people who each claim to have committed the crime.

Easy and quick to read, I enjoyed the whole setting in Provence and in particular the character of Rose.
I will glady read more in this series. I am looking forward to seeing how Julia's love life in particular develops.

So I'll admit that I often choose cozy mysteries based on the cover, title, topic, and a brief glance of the synopsis. The Shady Chateau started off as a book I definitely wouldn't keep reading! However, I decided to. I was not disappointed. Grandma is my favorite character! The story kept me engaged, built nicely, and had a great ending. I'm glad I stick with it!

The Shady Chateau is the fourth book in the Julie Cavallo Investigates series. This story was a bit different than the usual Julie books to me. She was on a holiday weekend with Rose trying to relax but impending death seems to follow her where ever she might be. The story flowed really well and had great twists and turns. Her “visions” were set in a perfect timing in this book. She was able to discover the culprit, but there is a surprising twist to the ending I didn’t see coming. Great story! My most favorite on of the series yet! Off to read number five next. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I found myself conflicted morally in reading this book. It was well written, yet maybe there was a difference in grasping some of the humor because of the French culture. It wasn’t my favorite read, but it did have some interesting concepts to ponder. In fact, I am reading the next book in the series now!

I enjoyed that the book could stand alone even though it was the 4th book in the series. The characters were complete and prior reveals about them were referenced as needed without distracting from the story. Well developed characters and storyline. Very enjoyable.

A great addition to the series! The FERJ are at it again with solving a mystery. I loved seeing Julie and her love interest make it one step closer to romance. This mystery had lots of twists and turns and underlying mysteries to solve to get to the WHODUNIT. Definitely worth a read!

I received this book for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

This was a fun mystery. (As a side note, I always wonder at “fun” being used to describe books about murder, but I digress.) “Fun” really is a good word, though. Lots of interesting goings-on, some cool characters, and cosplay. Plus a lovely setting. Toss in a corpse, and you’ve got yourself a mystery.
While I enjoyed the mystery, I wanted a bit more of the cosplay element. The blurb made me pumped for that part, but I felt like it was mostly hinted at, rather than really shown. This is just my opinion. Others may feel differently.
All in all, worth a read, especially if you like some fictional/historical drama with your modern-day mysteries.

A cozy mystery that is a part of a series but reads as a stand alone. I really like Julie and although she has visions this is not a paranormal mystery. I like how her relationship with her friends are a big part of the story. I look forward to reading more of her adventures.

Love this installment of the book series. Eric had such a good gut feeling that something was going to happen and he was right. The only part I didn’t like was the killer getting away with it. I do think he deserved it. Hunting men and then paying someone to take the fall.
