An elderly widow and widower become best friends and marry for the sake of convenience. But when their platonic relationship grows rocky, will it lead to divorce or romantic love?

Ben and Rachel take a beach week trip with three senior couples from their church. Their housemates try to turn the elderly widow and widower into a couple, only to discover that Ben and Rachel are vehemently opposed to having a romantic relationship. But they don't object to becoming friends.
Their friendship flourishes once they're home again. Rachel frequently cooks for Ben and he becomes her driver when she can no longer drive safely. They enjoy gin rummy, target shooting at the range, and napping in separate recliners in the great room of Rachel's mansion.
Ready to downsize and force her daughter Emily to move out, she and Ben purchase a small house together. For the sake of propriety, they marry platonically and then gradually settle into a comfortable routine.
Emily, badly spoiled by her late father, wants to convert the mansion into a bed-and-breakfast. Rachel won't spoil Emily further by giving her the house. She must get a mortgage or move out.
Rachel spends a great deal of time with Emily, time she used to spend with Ben. He feels like his best friend is deserting him.
Can their friendship be saved? And is there a possibility their platonic marriage can turn into a romantic one?

About the author

Roger E. Bruner

32 books26 followers
Former English teacher, job counselor/interviewer, and programmer/analyst. Retired at 62 to write full-time.

Roger can't decide which genre he prefers. He's written speculative fiction, contemporary women's fiction, and novels for teens. His current interest is fiction for and about senior adults. All of his twenty-four novels are Christian, however, and are free from objectionable language, sexual content, and gratuitous violence.

Roger plays bass on his church praise team and guitar at a weekly nursing home ministry. He has also been on mission trips to Australia, England, Wales, Romania, and Nicaragua.

At 78 he's still in pretty good health, but stays home a lot more than he used to. He enjoys reading, walking, photography, writing music and recording his own songs at home, and playing Quidler with his delightful wife, Kathleen.
