If you are in the mood for a sweet book with middle school kids who have middle school insecurities, mild drama, and charming characters, I have a suggestion for you. Fake Me a Match is the perfect read for middle school girls who always wish they had a sister, best friend, boyfriend, or classmate who was a real and sincere friend. Author Lauren Barnholdt really knew her audience for this book and catered the story to appeal to girls who might think a lot about friendships and boys. There really isn’t anything wrong with that, in a book like this.

Avery has friends at school, but things haven’t been the same since her former best friend dumped her and became part of the popular crowd. Her situation at home might give her a solution when her mother is remarrying and Avery gains a step-sister, Blake. Blake can be a little aloof, but also has her sweet moments too. So, when Avery has the chance to fix Blake up with her crush, Avery can’t resist. That’s when everything seems to go wrong: the crush has his eye on someone else, Avery is caught in the middle of a school scandal, and Blake becomes close with Avery’s ex-best friend.

This book includes a little bit of something for everyone including a wedding, school projects, parties, pets, first kisses, and student council. This is exactly the kind of book I might have been interested in as a sixth grader. The cover, to me, could have been just a bit more appealing to girls: c’mon, weddings, new sisters, and cute dog-loving boys. The best you came up with was a cartoonish girl on a computer? I hope it still can find its way into the hands of the 10 to 13 yr old crowd. Otherwise this book was a win for me. It will also be popular with middle schoolers looking for a tame but updated book about light middle school drama.

I really loved this book. so it is about this girl named Avery and Avery is gonna have a new step sister. Avery really wants a new best friend because her old last friend ditched her to hang out with a popular group so now she is lonely. so when her stepsister blake finally comes to her house she is so excited. when blake comes she realizes they might be best friends until blake is forcing Avery to ask her mom for a dog. and of course, her mom says "yes." so they go to the animal shelter get two dogs named Gus and princess and guess what blake does not take care of her dog princess at all leaving Avery to take care of her crazy dog Gus be herself and take care of the princess.
Gus is so crazy that Avery needs someone to help her take care of it and teach the dog to behave so Avery meets up with Blakes's new crush sam and they hang out. sam ends up liking Avery and they kiss! Does Avery totally freak out? does sam end up not liking her? do the get together? will blake find out?

Fake Me A Match is a cute little book. And it's the first book I've read in ages that has that rather large font size that you get in children's books! Maybe because this is a children's book! Anyways, I am going off topic here.

I chose to read this book not because I had really been wanting to read it, but because I was participating in a readathon (and I was also reading The Historian at the time), so I decided that something short, cute and easy to read was just the thing to refresh my mind after too much historical information about Dracula,

Fake Me A Match is the story of Avery. Avery lives with her mum, who is going to get married to a guy, who also has a daughter, Blake. So Avery is absolutely sure that she and Blake will end up being BFFs. But then Blake starts to get chummy with Avery's ex-BFF, Sophie, and she doesn't know what she's doing wrong. Avery is also on the student council and is put in charge of the eighth grade charity project, where they're going to raise money by playing matchmaker. Things start to get complicated when Avery, knowing that Blake fancies Sam, decides to tamper with the "matchmaking programme" and set the two of them up. But, of course, things go wrong and Avery ends up pairing herself with Sam. And then she realises that she actually likes Sam and that Sam also likes her back. It does get a little complicated, doesn't it??

This is a book that is aimed at younger readers and it shows. The language isn't dumbed down in any way, but it is a lot simple. Lauren Barnholdt really has done an excellent job of getting into the young teenager's mind and depicts their mannerisms, thoughts and worries in a lovely and very sweet way. Character development is okay, despite the fact that I really could not stand Avery. To me, she came of as a bit of a whiny little girl who is overenthusiastic about everything and ended up getting on my nerves. As for Blake, she wasn't really very nice for the most part of the book. Sam, on the other hand, was a lovely character. We first meet him through Avery's preconceptions about him, but through their charity project and their dog-training sessions, we get to see what he's really like. I love it when the boy in the book is a good boy!

All in all, Fake Me A Match is a great book for younger readers, but might not be very appealing to older ones. I suppose that what this book really is is a light fluffy read (just like chick lit) for young teenagers. Definitely a book to check out if you like that kind of thing! (I am definitely going to try reading one of her titles for older readers, because I really liked her writing style!)

My Thoughts: Let me start off by saying I am a huge fan of Lauren Barnholdt. If she wrote it, I will read it. I love all her of books!

Fake Me A Match is more Middle Grade than Young Adult. I tend to stay away from Middle Grade because usually I don't like reading about 12-13 year-olds. But when I saw what this was about I knew I had to read it, plus its by Barnholdt.

We are introduced to Avery who is 13 years old. She lives with her mom. She is getting a new sister (stepsister) because her mom is marrying a guy and his daughter is coming down from New York to live with them. Avery couldn't be more stoked. She's an only child and she's finally going to have someone to share things with and be a real family. She couldn't be more excited!

Blake and her Dad move into the house. It isn't as picture perfect as Avery hoped. Blake is kind of high maintenance and she gets her mind set on something, gets it, than doesn't really care about it anymore.

Avery gets put in charge of the charity project for Student Council. It’s a matchmaking service. Everyone fills out a questionnaire, than a computer goes and matches people up and people pay to get their results. Sounds pretty fun, right?

Avery isn't really into it, she doesn't think about boys too much. But she does like one boy in particular at the beginning of the novel. But, Blake likes another (Sam) so Avery figures she'll be nice and change the results so Blake gets matched with Sam.

Her plan doesn't go the way she expects it too and things get very very complicated. Not only that, but Avery is starting to have feelings for someone else.

Lets see, I really liked this book because I liked the angle with the dogs, I liked the boys, I liked the relationship between Avery and everyone else. It was fun and full of drama. There was a lot of drama.

Remember, this is more middle school and its more fun than real serious. So at times the characters can seem pretty immature and young but I still liked it a lot.

Overall: I really enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun. If your expecting an in-depth book, you might want to stay away from this one, BUT if you want something cute and funny, read this now! It was what I was in the mood for and I liked it!

Cover: Like it. Not usually into cartoon covers but the description alone made me want to read this.

What I'd Give It: 4/5 Cupcakes

Avery really wants her new stepsister Blake to like her. Not only is she an only child, she also just recently lost her best friend, Sophie, who decided earlier in the school year that she was too cool to hang out with Avery anymore. Avery thinks a stepsister would make a perfect best friend, and she does her best to impress Blake at every opportunity. Unfortunately, things don't go exactly as Avery planned, and before long, Blake is hanging out with Sophie instead of her!

But Avery is determined not to lose anything else to Sophie, so when she is put in charge of the class charity project - a matchingmaking service - she vows to win Blake over again by matching her up with her crush Sam. Again, though, Avery's best laid plans go somewhat awry. Not only do the matches get mixed up, but the teacher in charge of the project can tell they've been tampered with. On top of that, Avery starts to have feelings for Sam, too - feelings which he just might reciprocate.

I have sort of an interesting relationship with Lauren Barnholdt's books. I have tried a couple of times to get into her YA books, and I've never been able to click with them, but I love the way she writes middle grade. Previously, I read The Secret Identity of Devon Delaney, about a girl who lies in an attempt to reinvent herself, and then must find her way back to the truth. I noted some similar themes in this book, and recognized the same contemporary, lively, and original writing style. I felt connected to Avery from the very first page of the book, and her emotions became the driving force behind the plot. I felt myself getting butterflies during her first kiss, and worrying for her when she was on the verge of getting in trouble.

From what I've read, Barnholdt's YA books tend to include more mature themes that appeal mainly to high school kids. This book, by contrast, is very tame. Avery is new to the dating scene, and her interactions with Sam are very sweet and innocent. I think girls in late elementary and middle school would recognize themselves in Avery's character and in the things that happen in her day to day life, and would sympathize wholeheartedly with her desire for friendship and the frustration of sharing a crush with a close friend.

I think it's a little difficult for me to review middle grade books -- both because I don't read a lot of the genre and because it's been a while since I was 13 years old. I can't quite remember what kinds of plots and characters I enjoyed at that time, or whether or not my tastes from that era could really be trusted now. But, when I saw the cute cover on GalleyGrab, I decided to give FAKE ME A MATCH a shot (even though I wasn't crazy about the few YA titles I read from this author, to be honest).

Starting with the plot. Avery is a 13-year old girl who is excited about her mother's upcoming marriage, which will finally leave her with a (step)sister of the same age. But, when Blake comes into the picture, she's not exactly what Avery expected. She's obsessed with popularity and even befriends Avery's ex-best friend, who previously ditched her for the more popular crowd. Even so, Avery is desperate to make Blake her new BFF, no matter what it takes.

Of course, Blake sets her sights on the most cute and popular guy in school, who just so happens to be the guy that Avery wants to date. Then, Avery's school has a fund raiser in which students can be matched up, via computer, with other seventh-grades -- so, Avery sets out to rig the results in order to lure Blake into befriending her. Of course, the matches get even further messed up, and there's a lot of craziness that ensues involving dogs, bridesmaids dresses, weird student council meetings, and crazy seventh grade blackmail threats.

I think, overall, FAKE ME A MATCH was a pretty cute read. I'm not certain that my 13-year old self would have bought the idea that a middle school would not only allow but also endorse a match-matching scheme for a bunch of 7th grades, but it was a cute enough plot device to create all kinds of teenage love quandaries that would probably interest middle-grade (girl) readers.

Again, since middle-grade novels aren't exactly my forte, I'm not positive I'm the best to review this book. But, I read it from cover to cover and didn't give up halfway through, so that must say something, right?

Avery LaDuke is a thirteen year old in the seventh grade who has recently been ditched for the popular crowd by her ex best-friend, Sophie. When Avery's mom is about to get married to Will Avery sees this as a window of opportunity to find a new bestie because Will has a 13 year old daughter, Blake. Blake convinces Avery's mom to get a dog but when they go dog shopping Blake shows no interest and instead of getting one dog they get two! When Blake's first day of school comes she immediately morphs into the popular crowd and finds herself liking Sam Humphrey, the most popular guy in the school, who thinks Blake is cute but Avery thinks he's a flirt and never showed any interest in him....yet. Blake also gets a new best friend but it's not Avery it's Sophie! I mean sure they're best friends but Sophie is her second best friend! During all this the student council is hosting an annual fundraiser that Avery is gonna take charge of, which is a big deal for a 7th grader! But Avery seems a little less excited for the project when she finds out it's a match making service. Avery also doesn't like the fact that Sam is her annoying assistant! One day when Blake and Avery are walking their dogs Sam volunteers to train their dogs and of course Blake agrees. When Blake doesn't show up Avery's forced to train with Sam alone but ends up having a great time. Remeber when I told you that Sophie's Blake's new bestie? Well Avery tries to make Blake like her more by making Sam and Blake get matched up together! But then a problem occurs and Avery ends up getting matched up with Sam! To make things worst the teacher that runs student council finds out that someone messed with the results and knows that it's either Sam or Avery because those were the only two people in the room at the time! Who ever it is is supposed to get a big punishment! She later on realizes that she likes Sam and at Blake's surprise party they kiss not once but twice! But when Sophie sees and threatens to spill her secret what is Avery gonna do?! She has to confront her secret to Blake of she"ll lose Blake and Sam!
I loved this book and I hope you do to! READ IT! :)

Avery is very excited to be getting a new step-sister, and she is pulling out all the stops so they will be best friends. Unfortunately, her new step-sister Blake is less than interested. Until she meets Sam, who often hangs at his grandmother's house right around the corner. Now Blake is ready to hang out all the time (provided Sam is near). Things get more complicated though as Sam starts to pay more attention to Avery. Throw in picking out bridesmaid dresses, chairing the student council charity project, and trying to train the new dogs Blake was dying to get, and Avery suddenly has her hands very full. Avery will have to be very careful to get everything done without making an enemy of Blake. Or Sam.

This was a very cute book. I thought Avery was a very fun character. She was a bit of an overachiever, but not in an annoying way. She really seemed like a fun 13 year old. I thought Blake was incredibly annoying at first, but she grew on me as the book went on. I can see how that must have been a hard situation to be in. It was pretty funny as she tried to be so much more worldly than Avery. Avery was more content to progress at her own pace and not try to be more mature too fast. I think Sam would have been my dream guy at 13. He was smart and funny (although a bit more considerate than I've known any boy that age to be). The plot was fairly basic, but it was entertaining. Avery got into quite a few scrapes, some of which were easily solved. In fact some of them were so easily solved I wondered why they even happened. I guess it did add for more wacky fun though.

I think any tween girl will love this book. It has just the right amount of fun and romance. It's all totally age appropriate too. I had a really great time reading it at any rate. Avery was a bit like me at that age, and I was transported back in time for a bit. So overall, this is a very fun book!

Thirteen year-old, Avery LaDuke is about to become a step-sister. Her mom is marrying Will, and Will has a girl, Blake, that’s in the same grade as Avery. Avery couldn’t be more excited. Recently, Avery was kicked to the curb by her ex-best friend, Sophie Burns. She can’t wait for Blake to move in with them, so they can bond and become friends. She’s even painting their room a pretty shade of green.

When Blake first arrives, she convinces Avery to ask her mom for a dog. Surprisingly, her mom says yes, and they end up with two dogs, Gus and Princess. Unfortunately for Avery, Blake shirks a lot of her responsibilities for her dog, Princess, so Avery has to pick up the slack. One day when they are dog walking, both of the girls discover that Sam’s, one of the cutest and popular guys of their school, grandmother lives close-by.

Blake couldn’t be more excited because she has a crush on Sam. Sam and Avery are both on the student council. Avery is put as the head of the fundraiser. To her dismay, the fundraiser is a matchmaking service. She decides that she’s going to match Blake with Sam, what is more perfect than welcoming her as a stepsister than this?

I have been reading a lot of paranormal books lately, and was in need of a fluffy, cute read. This book was definitely a good, pick-me up book. I also have recently started to like middle grade literature, as well. I felt bad for Avery. It’s hard to stop being friends with someone, especially if it wasn’t mutual. I wanted to like Blake, but I felt like she could have tried to hang out more with Avery. She somewhat redeems herself in the end, but I like Avery more.

I read this with my daughter. At first I wasn't enthusiastic about reading it, because it looked, I don't know... fluffy. But I ended up really getting into it.

Avery is a good girl. Good grades, student council, never been in trouble, not boy crazy or fashion crazy. But when her mom remarries and she gets a new stepsister, she wants desperately for Blake to become her new BFF. She is so eager to please Blake that she begins to do a little fudging here, and a little lying there. And before you know it, she's tangled in a web she sees no way out of.

Most readers have called this book "cute," and it is, with innocent first crushes, innocent first kisses, and the sparkly feeling in your stomach from having a boy you like just be near you, but Avery's agonies of emotional distress were not cute, but realistically painful. It does all work out in the end, as I knew it would. It works out when all the truth is out in the open.

There was only one secret that didn't get revealed. As a mother, I had a problem with the part where the girls ruined their bridesmaids dresses, and fixed them on their own. I thought they should have fessed up to their mother immediately, even if they did get in trouble. Except for that case, the book tells us, deception is no good. But you do get a few points if you deceive for a good reason. And trying to make someone else happy is a good reason.

Thanks to S&S galley grab for the ARC.

This was a nice, cute and light read. It was funny and made me laugh out loud in a lot of scenes. It also provided an insight into inner psyche and ramblings of a 13 year old. There were times Avery (MC) would go on and on about nothing specific just ranting. I found it a bit annoying at times. Also Avery going back and forth about Sam also got on my nerves.
I've read other books of Lauren Barnholdt like Two-way Street and Sometimes It Happens. Those both books were waay better than this one. But probably b'coz this book is for much younger readers, and that came as a surprise for me. Having read Lauren Barnholdt's other books which were not really for that much of younger readers, I didn't see this coming and that probably counted towards my 3 stars, since I had much higher expectations.

Overall, it was not a bad read and would recommend it for middle grade age readers and also if you are looking for a cute and light read.

I SO loved Avery! Avery is such a wonderful girl! She's nice and selfless and she so wants to be liked! She truly believes that because Blake is going to be her stepsister, they will be insta-best friends and I was so rooting for her that everything was gonna work out! She manages to land herself in some funny situations and well, this girl is just awesome.

Avery was so scared of loosing Blake as a friend that she denies herself the opportunity to be with the boy she likes. I don't think my 13-year-old self would have done that.

One other thing I loved about this book: Avery and Blake were both (mostly) ok with the fact their parents were getting married. There was no evil step-whatever going on. Things that went wrong weren't caused by spite, HOORAY for this!

Sam was adorable, really. He sounds like a boy 13-year-old me would have fallen head over heels for and I loved the boyness of him. He turns out to be such a sweetie!

Anyway, this was such a CUTE read! I really enjoyed the other novel I read by Lauren Barnholdt: Sometimes It Happens, and this one convinced me it's not a one-hit-wonder. I think I've found me a new author for my favourites list :)

My rating: 4,5 stars

I thought that this book looked cute when reading the description on the egalley, and really I can’t think of a better word then cute to describe it. I don’t mean this in a sarcastic way, but the kind that when you finish reading you say “aw that was cute”, and really it was, very cute. I liked the creativity in the story about middle school aged kids, and how they raise money for their student council. It steps away from some of the books geared at this age group, and it is really appropriate and fun (cute). I was glad to have a book I could read quickly since I was down to the wire, but I was also pleasantly surprised. Being an adult and reading this I can’t say it is one of my favorites but if I put myself back in my 13 year old self, I know I would have liked this, and then tried out some of the ideas at my own middle school. I was also really pleased that even the “mean” girl in this book was fairly tame, I applaud the author for leaving the cattiness that this age group is susceptible to and not giving young girls that might read this too much food for thought. In the end there are a few points of mean-ness, but mostly fun and good life lessons learned at a young age.

(3.5 stars) I thought this was a cute story--if not really substantive. In this book, 13-year-old Avery LaDuke has high hopes for her new step-sister (who's exactly her age), since her current BFF has been acting strange. When Avery gets put in charge of a school fundraiser--a matchmaking project--she knows just what to do: she'll fix the results so Blake gets matched with Sam, her current crush. Only, something goes wrong and Avery gets matched with Sam instead--and worse still, she discovers that he might not be the stuck-up jerk she's always thought he was. Instead, she might actually like him. I thought the writing here was fun--Barnholdt has a great MG voice, the characters were relatable, and the plot situations were familiar to anyone who lived through junior high.

As her mother makes plans for her marriage, seventh grader Avery tries to befriend her new stepsister Blake who is used to getting her way. When Blake seems to like Sam, a flirtatious classmate, Avery tampers with the matchmaking questionnaires all the students have filled out so that Sam and Blake will be matched. But things often don't sort out the way they're planned, and Sam ends up liking Avery. Many complications ensue, and the budding friendship between the girls is strained. Avery must find a way to make amends and to own up to her own growing affection for Sam.

Ow! This books was an Ah-Dorable love story! Avery doesn't know what to do are so many periods of time in the book I honestly hated Blake in the beginning. I thought she was some snobby brat that wanted to take everything away from Avery. But at the end she was OK. I mean who wouldn't want to go on a shopping spree with your sister as if you guys are BFF'S! I'm 13 years old and my Mom would NEVER let me do that! I love how Sam admits to Avery how he likes her not Blake. It was so cute. I would love to have a cute boy like Sam. I swear, I fall for every boy in Lauren Barnholdt's books!

I thought the book was a bit boring and I was a disappointed in what I had read. There were a few interesting parts and my favorite character was Blake because I liked her attitude and her personality. This book is probably recommended to people who like reading about life in middle school but I dont prefer that because I am in middle school so I want to leave the remaining 2 years for me a mystery but I like reading about High School because I need to be able to survive in High School but "Fake Me a Match" is just not meant for me.

I was first attracted to this book because 1. It was written by Lauren Barnholdt and 2. It was an Aladdin Mix book. I've read a few of them before and I found them to be quite cute and refreshing reads. This book did not disappoint me of that expectation.
This story, while not an amazing book that I couldn't put down, was a great read for me when I wanted to pass the time. I recommend it to those who enjoy reading light books with a cute story line. :)

No rating because I simply couldn't finish this. I can usually enjoy (and legitimately looove) young-adult novels, but this came across as much younger. I think kids from about the age of 10-14 would enjoy this. It was far too dramatic, simplistic and superficial; just not a novel for me.

At first I thought the book was really annoying since it is kind of under my age limit. And the main character whines throughout the entire book. But my sister read it and she liked it and asked me to read it so I did. And after about a little over 100 pages into the book I actually started to get interested. It was cute, with a little middle school love triangle. Completely harmless.

Great book. It had me wondering what would happen next. I'm glad Avery and Blake made up. Although I still think is stuck up. She admitted she didn't like Sam the way Avery did. But, I think she was more mad that Avery didn't tell her rather then about the kiss.

It had great development. I wish there was a sequel.

I didn't know this was a middle school book when I checked it out, and I was slightly disappointed because my library has it labeled as YA. Anyway, I gave it a chance and honestly, it's cute with a very nice story line but it's just too young for me. Not the book's fault, totally on me.

I really like it. It shows what can happen when a plan back-fires on you. The main character also has some experiences that may change her personality. I would recomend this if you enjoy romance books.

I read about great reviews where the person states that once she held the book, she never got the urge to put it down.

Finally, I was able to relate to the person after reading this cute, sensible paced book that made me smile and appreciate the beauty of innocent love.
