Some Fluff, Some Good Exercises, But…

This collection contains three books previously published by the publisher on chair yoga, balancing exercises, and wall pilates. My concerns for the book below are similar for the others. Here’s my full review of the balance book.

Review of Balance Exercises:
As I do have balance issues, I always snap up books like this when I see them on book review sites. I appreciate how this author divides this book into three levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. I thought the first part of the book had a bit of fluff—just get to the exercises!—and was even wrong in some places. I actually have vestibular issues because of an infection I had in my 8th cranial nerve over a decade ago, and the way the author describes vestibular exercises is wrong. It's not about the muscles, as the author states. True vestibular exercises help train or retrain your brain to make sense of the world around you and your place in it, something that can go haywire if you have vestibular issues like vertigo. The beginner exercises seem to be truly geared for beginners. So long as someone has a good basic use of all their body parts, they should be able to do these successfully. I didn't necessarily think, though, that these made a natural bridge to the intermediate exercises, as the intermediate ones—at least a few of them—would be difficult or even impossible for some people with true vestibular issues. I cannot fathom trying to do the cushion exercise or close my eyes while doing these, as that would be a sure recipe for disaster for me. I didn't see how doing the beginner exercises for a prolonged period of time would help you do more of the intermediate, or certainly, the advanced ones. As I looked at some exercises, I thought that if you could do these exercises, you wouldn't need to have a book of balance exercises in the first place! If you do have vestibular problems or other issues that cause you balance troubles, you might find this book helpful, but certainly, be aware of your own limitations and consider what might not be safe for you in particular.

I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Excellent Book

As a former personal trainer I must say this book is a great read for our senior population. Michael and Nathalie do a fantastic job of explaining in detail each exercise along with clear and concise illustration. They promote caution for beginners and offer a more advanced program for those who work at it or those who are more advanced. I recommend every senior read it.

Great multi volume set

Love getting them all together, great reference and resource when trying to target an area or just mixing things up. Originally got for my mom, now keeping it for me.
