I had heard of Fred "Cyclone" Taylor many times over my lifetime. This was a very interesting account of the life of a hockey player before the NHL. The Patricks and the Pacific Coast League, the challenges for the Stanley Cup and many other things that are different from professional hockey today. A great read.
I purchased a lot of hockey books with an eye towards one specific book. This book was not the one I sought after, nonetheless, I thought I would give it a read as it appeared to be about the early days of pro hockey. What a wonderful book about Cyclone Taylor, early pro hockey on east and west coast of Canada, and a great look at life in the early 1900’s. Great read!
This is the only comprehensive biography of Cylone Taylor. Whitehead also had the benefit of talking to an elderly Taylor while writing it, which helps fill in some important details. He covers his entire life up to a couple years before Taylor's death, and is a great easy read. It's not so much filled with stats and dates, but more anecdotes and reflections from Taylor. However there are a couple errors with the specifics, but considering Taylor was in his 90s and reflecting on things up to 70 years prior, that is to be expected, and so long as the reader is aware, it should be fine. A great source of information for early hockey history, and an overall great book to read.
