Poetry. Fiction. Native American Studies. This anthology of native Alaskan writers helps map the rich and unique identity of the native Alaskan people. Included in the book are bios of the selected writers and bibliographies of their books. The authors include Diane E. Benson, Fred Bigjim, Robert H. Davis, Mary Lockwood, Yvone Mozee, Glen Simson, and Mary TallMountain. From different perspectives, each captures the environment of Alaska, their own relationship to that land, and the social particulars of an underappreciated community.
A goal I have this year is to read more stories by Alaska authors, and also make sure to read a variety of voices under that umbrella. I really enjoyed this anthology, and familiarizing myself with Native Alaskan authors, playwrights, and poets. Some of their perspectives really impacted me and has helped me develop a more full understanding of Native Alaskans' world view and how white settlement and colonialism affects them today.
