Lawyer Genna Monroe doesn't mean to eavesdrop on a private romantic liaison one sultry night in New Orleans. When she hears the man's sexy whisper, though, she feels as if he's seducing her. Now she can't get his voice out of her mind, and just thinking of him isn't enough. She has to have his body, too....

Nick Cavallo knows of his best friend's desires for a secret rendezvous, and is more than willing to fulfill them. He's wanted Genna for longer than he can remember, and who cares if their steamy nights need to be anonymous? Provided she never finds out the truth, he's happy...and so is she. But when Nick wants more than just hot sex, he's not sure if Genna will want the man behind the voice....

"Tell me what you want." The whisper was husky, masculine and as sinfully rich as bourbon.

[...]

"I want you to make love to me." This voice was female, decidedly sultry and lilted with a Spanish accent.

[...]

Genna's eyes flew open. She heard rustling behind her and the unmistakable sound of kissing. Deep, wet, hungry kissing. It was coming from right behind her, on the other side of the bush that sheltered her.

The man's whisper held a hint of humor as he answered. "Your note hinted as much."

"Were you insulted?"

"Intrigued. You're beautiful." There was an undeniable sexual rhythm to the conversation between these two strangers that fascinated Genna. They used words like kisses.

"So are you." The foreign woman laughed softly. "I saw you and I thought, 'That is a man who knows how to please a woman.'"

"I do my best."

More kissing. She heard bodies shifting"...

[...]

There was a pause, and sudden stillness. "Are you married?"

The woman laughed softly. "A moral man. How unusual. No. I'm not married … anymore. I prefer my freedom."

"Good. So do I," replied that seductive, whispering masculine voice. "We'll make it a night to remember."

[...]

She shifted on the stone bench as the kissing noises resumed.

[...]

"Your neck is beautiful. Your throat is beautiful… I want to see all your beauty. I want to make love to you under the stars."

[...]

"Your breasts are as gold as the moon." The man's husky whisper had her sitting down again so fast she jammed her tailbone on the bench. Looked like they'd passed the fully clothed stage, and she'd passed the walking-away stage. She'd just ignore them and think about something else.

[...]

"Your skin tastes like peaches," he whispered. From the sound of things, he was pretty much gorging himself.

"Mmm."

"Lean back. That's good. I'm going to put my tongue on your nipples and when they are very wet I'm going watch them tighten as the breeze blows them dry."

Genna's mouth went dry and she felt her own nipples tighten. No man had ever worshipped her body that way. Maybe if they had she wouldn't have given up on sex as a big waste of time. What would it be like to have the whispering stranger treat her body with such reverence? What if it were her breast he was sucking? Her making those breathy moans of delight?

"Do you like this?"

Damned if her head didn't nod of its own volition. Her nipples tingled as she imagined the stranger licking them, this man who knew how to please a woman. She almost felt the soft air teasing them dry like a second caress.

He whispered endearments, earthy pleasure words, some muffled as though his lips were against the woman's skin. She was certain she even heard the sigh of flesh rubbing against flesh. Her body, denied sex for so long, quivered with vicarious pleasure.

"Spread your legs," he commanded.

[...]

"The skin of your thighs is so soft. It's like silk. Warm silk."

[...]

"Do you know where I want to touch you next?"

"Yes, oh, please."

She heard a soft chuckle. "Don't be too eager. Hold your hips still and spread your legs wider for me."

The woman's low words were in Spanish. Genna didn't know what they meant, but they sounded desperate. Then the unseen woman gasped and Genna knew he was touching her, stroking her. Her body reacted as though it were Genna herself he touched and stroked.

"You're so wet." His voice was softer than the breeze. "Are you wet for me?"

"Sí, querido, sí," the foreign woman all but sobbed.

[...]

"This is a very pretty thong, but I think it needs to come off. Lift your hips for me."

"Hurry. I'm burning."

[...]

"You're beautiful. In a moment I'm going to bury myself inside you, but for now I just want to look at your lovely body spread out under the stars."

A strangled gurgle met his words.

"I want to feel you come. Will you come for me when I'm moving deep inside your body?" She heard the slide of a zipper.

[...]

"You know I will. I want you so."

[...]

"I'm going to make you scream with pleasure," he promised softly.

[...]

Behind her she heard a tearing sound. A condom package ripping open?

"Hurry, please!" The woman didn't bother to whisper, and her singsong voice held an edge of desperation. "I need you inside me. Now."

"Anna-Maria? Anna-Mari-ia." An older woman's voice broke the magic spell of the night.

[...]

..."frantic scuffling took place behind her. A string of low-voiced Spanish curses followed. "I am sorry. I must go."

"I'll come to your room—"

"No."

"You come to—"

"No. That's the flight attendant in charge. My … my boss. If she's looking for me it means our flight has been moved up. We will be leaving very soon. I am so sorry, querido. It would have been magnificent. Goodbye."

Genna heard one more quick kiss, then more rustling. A moment later, the woman left.

Then she heard another sound.

A very Anglo-Saxon curse.

It might have been amusing if she didn't know firsthand how frustrated the stranger must be feeling. She heard his breathing, harsh and ragged, and remained frozen in place, all but holding her breath so as not to be discovered eavesdropping. She felt like the unseen partner in a bizarre ménage à trois.

Know who the guy is? That's the hero of the book having sex with...um...not the heroine....while she's listening.

Yes, it's at the beginning of the book and, even though he's in love with the heroine, no, they aren't involved yet and blah, blah, blah...who cares?!

That scene right there knocked some stars off the book. I don't want to read a romance novel where the H is doing another woman. It's not romantic to me, no matter if it sets up the entire book. It's a giant pet peeve of mine -- H/OW sex scenes. Which makes me stupid, right?...cuz the whole premise of this book is that she hears him having sex with another woman and that floats her fantasy boat.

Thing is, I got the book because I figured somehow it was just a setup, that he was just going to pretend to "woo" some woman just to get the heroine to see him in a new light. You know...say sweet nothings in a seductive voice, etc., while knowing that she's eavesdropping. But, no...no wooing, no knowing....just him sexing another woman while she listens.

Yuck.

I did read the rest of the book, but the beginning did not put me in the right frame of mind.

Anyway, spoilers for the rest of the book --

Aunque cuesta creer que la protagonista ande tan a oscuras ;) hasta prácticamente el final, es un libro entretenido y de fácil lectura.

All I can say is REALLY?

She REALLY didn't know who he was? Is she that stupid? I wouldn't want her as my attorney.

What started out as a potentially good storyline descended into absolute, sheer, mind boggling wonder on my part - Is she really that stupid that she can't disseminate between her fantasy lover and the man she's been lusting after for years?

There is a certain amount of credibility in fiction and this went beyond far-fetched. It was flat out ridiculous and stupid. It's almost as if the author is poking fun at your intelligence.

I've read other Nancy Warren books and this one doesn't feel like her others. It was such a let-down.

I have a hard time believing that I wouldn't recognize my bestfriend's voice just because he's whispering. So Genna is an uptight woman with career plans. Nick is Genna's bestie and has wanted to be more than friends for years. What amazes me about this story is the romanticizing of all things Southern. As a Southern it felt like overkill. It's a nice story overall but I wasn't convinced that Genna would have gotten over herself enough to be with Nick.
