While "Cleopatra" is a longer picture book, it's tailored well to kids with full-page pictures, large type, and being broken into smaller chapters, and divided with subheadings from there. Green keeps the reader informed by detailing Egypt of the Ptolemies, Egypt and Rome, Upheaval in Rome, Antony and Cleopatra, and Actium and After. At the end of the book, Green includes a timeline spanning over 300 years, helpful for any reader to breakdown and see the information they learned in a compact way. Both the layout and word choice of this detailed biography make it perfect for younger readers.

THis was a pretty good book. I only read it because I was doing a report on Cleopatra so I wouldn't have read this for pleasure. But it was extremely helpful for my report! It had many facts along with people's ideas about her life and the author made it very clear which were which. It was very good for taking notes and just all together made it a very good read.

April, Cleopatra, Robert Green

For the month of April's book report I chose the book entitled, "Cleopatra", written by Robert Green. This nonfiction book is all about Cleopatra's early life and later life. In 69 B.C., Cleopatra was born in Alexandria, Egypt. She was born into the the first Ptolemy, because of this she would be forced into marrying a relative to keep the line of Greek going in Egypt. She was not a true Egyptian because of this practice, this instead made her truly Greek. Then, when she was nine years old in 60 B.C., Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus formed a Triumvirate to ensure the balance of power. Cleopatra's father, Ptolemy Auletes instantly became drawn to the Triumvirate of Rome. When Ptolemy found a revolt in his empire, he begged them to intervene. Julius and Crassus publicly supported him, but they then demanded a vast amount of money. When Ptolemy returned back to power, he had his daughter, Cleopatra marry Ptolemy XIII, one of her brothers. When they married Cleopatra was seventeen and Ptolemy XIII was ten years old.

Now, let's look at Cleopatra's older life. When Cleopatra heard of Julius Caesars arriving in Alexandria she raced to meet him because they were in the middle of a civil war. Ptolemy XIII was fighting against his twenty year old sister, Cleopatra. When she arrived in Alexandria to ask him for his support she rolled herself up in a carpet and had her servant carry her up to Caesar. Caesar was stunned by her magnificent beauty and confidence. When Julius Caesar left Egypt he put her on the Egyptian throne, and left her pregnant with his son, Ptolemy XV Caesar. The word of her pregnancy spread quickly, and made Caesars wife, Calpurnia, suffer. Then, a group of conspirators plotted the murder of Julius Caesar. Cleopatra knew she had to get Marc Antony on her side, and she thought the most efficient to do so was to charm him with her beauty and riches. Indeed Cleopatra charmed him. He then accompanied her back to Alexandria. When Marc Antony came to Egypt he made the Greeks feel safe and not frightened by him, and saw how good of a man he was. Later on, Octavius, Caesars adopted son, started a battle against Cleopatra and Marc Antony. Cleopatra would let her guard down only if Octavius would recognize her son as the ruler of Egypt. But, no matter what Octavius would not let that happen. He attacked them with great power. Marc Antony was fighting with great strength too, until a rumor about Cleopatra being dead got passed onto him. He threw himself onto his sword, but did not die instantly. Cleopatra demanded that he would be taken into the temple where she was kept. He died in her arms. She was then brought a large basket of figs. Not that long after she was found dead with two red spot marks on her arm. Octavius had no idea about what caused her death. He had Marc Antony and Cleopatra buried together and had Cleopatra's son, Ptolemy XV Caesar, put to death. In the end, Cleopatra lived to be thirty-nine years old, and had been the ruler of Egypt for twenty-two years. She ruled Egypt confidently and strongly for all to see.

Don't underestimate a woman just, because she is woman. Cleopatra wanted power of Egypt so she fought for what she wanted. Cleopatra even snuck into the royal palace to talk to Caesar and to deceive him for power. Soon enough she was carrying his baby. Caesar was planning to make himself the most powerful man in rome by strengthening his military, political power, and personal wealth. Julius, crassus, and pompey formed a government to insure balance of power. This messed up caesar's plan to be the one with all the control, so he had to improvise and create a new plan. When Cleopatra was born, Egypt had already been ruled by a foreign power,Greece for more than 250 years. When the two cities were at world with each other caesar and cleopatra rose to power leaded the war to victory. In the end Cleopatra finally got what she has always wanted, to rule a kingdom of her own.

Main idea- The main idea is that there can be many rulers but it always comes back to one. When Cleopatra was first married she left, because she wanted to rule on she own. She tried, but people would worship her separately. She learned after a while that she will gain power by taking down her enemies and rising back up to show how strong she is.She would never go back to two rulers one is good enough for all, and she was the greatest ruler for a woman in Eygpt.
