This was so interesting. It's science fiction, but I loved how the author added in faith. In the midst of an alien invasion no less. There is no language. There is violence, but nothing overly outrageous. There is kissing, but no more than that. Be aware of the cliff hanger ending, though!

I first read this book way back on 4 January 2016! Now, almost 10 years later I’ve read it again and I only did so because the author kind of asked me to. He’s supposedly re-written a lot of the material. I kind of liked the books the first time I read them, but now I’m not sure why. This one is interesting, has a very confusing military structure, some improbable situations, but is very exciting towards the end.

I don’t think anything was changed in this version of this book. Scott Remington is a regular guy just out of Michigan university where he left during his last year. Yeah, real smart decision right there? He’s now gone through some kind of Academy in Philadelphia and now he’s been assigned to the EDEN base at Richmond. EDEN stands for Earth Defense Network and it’s been established because Earth has come under attack by several alien species over the last few years. No one knows why these aliens are attacking Earth nor why they haven’t just taken over the planet since they are clearly superior in technology than Earth forces.

To count this threat, all of Earth’s forces were combined under the EDEN Command structure and fight as one force. So far, so good. But, this force is apparently commanded by a committee of “Judges” with a President in-charge of the High Eden HQ. Further, they have done away with enlisted ranks and now call them alphas, betas, gammas, deltas or epsilons. The first three were basically just privates and the last two were NCOs and SNCOs. Why the author chose to create this, I don’t know but it’s stupid and distracting.

The officer ranks are what everyone is familiar with although there does seem to be a large gap between Captains and Generals. There are Colonels and Majors around, I guess, but we don’t read anything about them.

So back to Scott Remington. He arrived late at Richmond but his roommate, David Jurgen, arrived even later. While Scott had been sleeping, they both decided to go out and scout their new home! They should have gotten the sleep they needed. They also find a couple of other new guys, one named Jayden Timmons and the other Becan McCrae. The later is from Ireland so he’s a long way off. Jayden is a sniper for the unit, but they also notice they are all Alphas! Brand new to the Richmond unit and the military, well except for their Academy training which I gather was much!

Now it just so happens that Falcon squadron had a reputation of having the best fighters in the entire Richmond organization. Well, they did until all of them except for the three officers got wiped out during their last mission. Captain Lilan was now given a new roster of personnel and he quickly noted that every one of the were Alphas! He expressed his displeasure with his boss, General Hutchin, although I don’t know why a General would be providing a Captain (Army-type) with a list of personnel at the squad level. But, the General does and he tells the Captain to live with it.

So the Captain does have to take this green squad on its first mission and you’ll be surprised at what happens. It’s highly unlikely something like this would play out, but it does in this story. To me, it seems like Earth is pretty desperate to be using green troops right from the start against a highly skilled and technologically advanced alien force.

And another thing. Scott Remington believes he was sent to fight the aliens by God! Yeah, that’s why he quit his finally year of college and went to join the military. Earth has been fighting these aliens for some time now and Scott believed it was his calling by God to go do his part for the war. Now, I’m not religious, no way, no how, so if I was Scott’s commander, I’d have the young man mentally examined. That’s my problem with this book. It’s got too much of a Christian religious undercurrent that just doesn’t happen. I’ve always wonder what happens if I’m praying for the other guy to die while he’s doing the same thing to his god. One of us is going to be disappointed. And Scott Remington doesn’t have a problem with killing aliens. In fact, it eventually gets worse for him.

Ok, enough of my ranting about this book. I do not like it as much as I initially did 10 years ago. It’s just not my kind of book. Still, book 2, “Outlaw Trigger”, is available on Amazon. I haven’t decided if I’m going to read this one again or not!

Improvement to the original book that I already liked, can wait for rest of rewrite for Destiny's Edge series so we can get the new books in.

Reading this not so long after rereading the originals was definitely interesting, made me experience the book from different perspective.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book! Really had fun with the mystery of it all with all the different kinds of aliens and the Nightmen! Excited to see where the rest of the story goes and what questions will be answered!
