Said to be the "queen of doujinshi", Ozaki Minami is one of the most eminent shoujo mangaka of the 4th generation of shoujo-manga. Her debut work was Chuusei no akashi (Proof of loyalty), published in 1988 on Margaret. The following year, her work 3 Days was published in Margaret No.6. (Both of these can be found in Zetsuai -1989- volume 5.) At the same year (1989), she started Zetsuai -1989- and became very popular. She is now working on the sequel, Bronze -Zetsuai since 1989-.
In an interview, she said she had never previously thought of being a mangaka. She describes herself as a willful, negative, conservative, petty, gloomy, niggardly, nervous, forgetful, untruthful, anxious, asking-for-trouble, self-destructive, boring person.

Yaoi classic! This manga is definitely not everybody's cup of tea. The drawings look more like fashion sketches and the characters are very dark, hurting on the inside and hurting others too. But the love story between Koji Nanjo and Takuto Izumi is epic among yaoi manga fans, that can't anybody deny.
Also, this edition contains a sneak peek into the history of Shounen-Ai, who were its pioneers and where and when it originated. Quite fascinating.

Das Cover hat mir so recht gut gefallen. Wir sehen hier den Charakter des Koji, wie er dem Betrachter entgegenblickt. Dabei ist vor allem die skizzenhafte Ausführung der der Zeichnung irgendwie sehr interessant wie ich finde. Aber leider, leider zeigt es auch die Qualität des Mangas im Innenteil und da fand ich das dann weniger ansprechend. Für die Reihe jedenfalls ist die Wahl des Covers durchaus gelungen, denn das Muster setzt sich fort und hat so einen hohen Wiedererkennungswert.
Eigener Eindruck:
Als der junge Fußballer Takuto einen betrunkenen Mann von der Straße aufliest, ahnt er noch nicht, wem er da eigentlich hilft. Doch schon bald muss er erkennen, dass Koji keinesfalls ein unbeschriebenes Blatt ist. Ganz im Gegenteil. Koji ist ein berühmter Sänger und in aller Munde. Ja, sogar für seine Skandale ist er bekannt. Und obwohl die beiden nicht unterschiedlicher sein könnten, freunden sie sich an und lernen sich so besser kennen, bis schließlich einer der beiden erkennen muss, dass er mehr für seinen Freund empfindet. Doch wie sollen die beiden damit umgehen und kann das alles gut gehen?
Ich war wirklich gespannt auf diese Reihe, weil ich immer wieder davon gehört und gelesen habe und diese so sehr gelobt wurde. Da konnte ich also auch nicht dran vorbei und hatte deswegen auch hohe Erwartungen an dieses Werk. Leider bin ich aber vollkommen enttäuscht worden. Zwar muss man hier das Alter des Werkes betrachten, aber ich fand die Zeichnungen einfach nur grausam schlecht und lieblos gestaltet. Außerdem konnte mich die Story auch nicht wirklich packen. Alles wirkt unrund und sprunghaft und doch recht übertrieben. Hinzu kommt, dass ich den Charakter des Koji einfach nur ätzend finde. Er ist mir bisweilen zu egoistisch und zu oberflächlich, während der Takuto weitaus reifer und gefestigter wirkt, auch wenn er von der Darstellung her noch kindlicher wirkt als Koji. Irgendwie passt das alles für mich nicht wirklich zusammen und auch Emotionen sucht man hier vergebens. Schade irgendwie, aber ich glaube nicht, dass ich die Reihe weiter verfolgen werde. Geld jedenfalls bezahle ich hierfür nicht weiter.
Fazit:

What Zetsuai is, for me: a really interesting story about love, and what it makes you do. In that sense, it is a love story, I suppose, but usually the term "love story" has a more positive connotation. And while there may well be people who find aspects of this particular love story admirable, I can't say I'm one of those.
This was interesting to read because apparently it was the first shonen ai manga published in Germany (or at least the first published by Carlsen). I have to say that it may very well have set the tone for some years to come, and you can think about that whatever you want.
The idea here is that the love between these two men is so strong that it transcends the usual barriers erected by society. At one point, Koji says something like, "I would love him even if he was a tree or a machine," which, yeah, sums it up pretty well. But I have to say that I prefer to think of these barriers as - well, if not non-existant, I don't think they have to be transcendended. They just don't matter. (I think there's a difference, but I don't know quite how to put it.)
In any case, what I liked about it was that it showed both character's despair at the situation they found themselves in. The despair itself was what I didn't like so much, but that's just a matter of taste, maybe. The art and especially the setup of each page was something I liked a lot about this.
All in all, it's a good manga, but not one I particularly enjoyed reading. But I am still glad I read it.

Manga recomendado: ‘’Zetsuai 1989’’, y ‘’Bronze: Zetsuai Since 1989’’, de Minami Ozaki. Ediciones Glénat. 20 tomos en 2 partes. Último tomo especial en japonés. Homosexualidad, relaciones tóxicas, erótica, amor…
Mi primera colección Yaoi. Insistí mucho a los vendedores de las tiendas de cómics para que se hicieran con algo de tema Yaoi, hace ya un tiempo. Un día apareció Glénat y me hizo feliz varias veces. Y todavía se lo agradezco…
El dibujo es hipnóticamente precioso, incluso si a veces es irregular y exagerado. También me encantan los ‘’SD’’ o ‘’Super-Deformed’’, que son las versiones ‘’enanas’’ de los personajes. Más cuando el personaje es serio y la autora también lo parece…
Me encanta esta ambigua autora que es capaz de hacerte querer a un muy atractivo bastardo, que resulta que tiene corazón; aunque a veces lo utilice como el culo, que dirían algunos. Un personaje atractivo hasta el punto de seducir al otro protagonista, que lo odia, lo ama, lo odia, lo ama…
Sus ancestros mantiene un linaje de locura y a veces quieres perdonarlo por ello… Pero este protagonista es capaz de hacer daño si pensar en el daño que provocará a su vez, y aun así, lo perdonas y lo entiendes.
El otro protagonista, más centrado, en teoría, mantiene un recuerdo que lo atormenta, a la par que mantiene a sus queridos hermanos… e intenta mantener la cordura, por más de uno, quizás…
Esta historia está condenada a repelerse después de la atracción a la que se deja llevar, y así durante… Una historia perturbada, perversa, llena de amor hiriente y reconfortante a la vez… Una pasión desbordante y completa hasta el fin… que me hizo releerme los tomos más de una vez.
Intentando parafrasear a uno de los protagonistas (el malo^^): ‘’Lo amaría incluso si fuera una mujer, un coche o una planta… ¿Y tú?’’
En la vida real la cosa sería de juzgado de guardia; pero para eso está la ficción…
Un clásico como ya no se hacen: el mismo dibujo de la autora ha cambiado con los años, como les ha pasado a muchos…
La historia tiene dos partes, como ya he dicho. Además de extras y ‘’Doujinshis’’, que son los tomos en donde la autora se permite pervertir totalmente a sus propios personajes, y a personajes basados en otros manga en los que se inspiró: ésta es una práctica habitual en el tema cómic japonés, donde se realizan los sueños pervertidos, explícitos, la mayoría de veces, de Mangakas y Frikis (y así algunos se quedan tan panchos criticando, mientras quizás tienen más por lo que callar...)
Y fuera del tema manga, desde hace ya tiempo, también se hacen estas cositas... Un ejemplo: ‘’El señor de los anilllos’’: relaciones entre personas del mismo sexo, o elfos macho y hombres juntitos y ‘pegajosamente’ acaramelados… en cuanto al tema homosexual se refiere… Aunque para mí, el Manga es cómic japonés, no español ni de otro país…
En las fotos no aparecen todos mis Doujinshis ni merchandise… que he conseguido con el tiempo entre compras a fans de otros países; a través de páginas conocidas o librerías especializadas donde los dueños son también Frikis, y que te traían el material desde Japón; y, por ejemplo, el último tomo, en una preciosa y especializada librería de París en la que si te paras más rato de la cuenta, sales arruinado ;)
Parece que esta historia me marcó, casi del mismo modo que están marcados los protagonistas…
¿Entregarías tu vida, tu alma… por un amor de este tipo?

2.5 stars. Review of the series entire. One of the ur-BL manga that I missed as a baby reader: a successful rock star is rescued after a bender by a soccer prodigy, revealing a missed connection from years ago that has since grown into an obsessive, operatic love. This has (more, helped establish) every problematic marker of the genre ("I'm not gay, I just love you" first among them; also a lot of sexual assault); but that's less memorable than: 1) a truly iconic, obsessive love with any number of quotable speeches about its nature; 2) the central role of soccer, frequently rendering high-tension moments in a plot which already overwrought patently ridiculous, as the beloved shoots a shot so hard it breaks the net and the lover's shades; 3) the unresolved, bitter ending - I've read a lot of BL, and prefer my BL weird and dark, but this may be the first conclusion I've encountered, and I'm taken by it.
Oh and: 4) OG fans put up with some truly illegible fan translations.
So: Good? unsurprisingly, no, not really. As bad as its reputation within the Western audience lead me to expect? no; not even the art. Recommended? I enjoyed it as a historical artifact, but, of the ur-BL I've read for the first time as an adult, this was probably the least successful. I'll still read the sequel, though.
Oh and: 4) OG fans put up with some truly illegible fan translations.

Obwohl ich den Manga (und auch BRONZE) seit Jahren im Regal stehen haben und Artworks kenne, wusste ich nicht, um was es in dem Manga genau geht und leider muss ich sagen, dass Zetsuai nicht die Art von Liebesgeschichte ist, die ich gerne lese, da sie von sehr viel Verzweiflung und Besessenheit getragen wird. Dies macht sicherlich einen großen Teil ihres Reizes aus, für mich funktioniert sie in dieser Art jedoch nicht.
Ich frage mich, wie ich diese Geschichte gefunden hätte, hätte ich sie damals direkt gelesen, als ich Boys Love für mich entdeckt habe...

No sé cuanto hace ya que vi el OVA y me gustó tanto de estilo de dibujo como por su breve argumento. Leyendo el manga, conozco un poco más de los protagonistas, y no sólo su lado atormentado y desesperado. Me está gustando.

Zetsuai 1989 es un manga con un principio aceptable pero que acaba yendo de mal en peor. Se vuelve repetitivo y los tomos finales son una sucesión de situaciones que hacen que te duela la cabeza de tanto poner los ojos en blanco. Sé que solo es ficción pero a mí ese tipo de "giros argumentales" no me gustan, ¿qué queréis que os diga?
Supongo que si os gusta el yaoi de este estilo, como sacado de una telenovela, os puede llegar a convencer... aunque tenéis sólo curiosidad, yo os recomiendo más el OVA que dura 50 minutos y es una versión mucho más interesante de la historia.

Waaaa, este fue el primer manga japonés que leí hace muchos años y me lo compré en un puestecito de mangas dentro del Metro Pino Suárez. Cada mes importaban un volumen de la editorial española Glenat y allí estaba yo lista para comprar mi ejemplar como estudihambre.
Muchos criticaron a Minami Ozqki por su dibujo demasiado alargado dándole esas dimensiones imposibles a sus personajes. Esto no evitó que tuviera un éxito arrollador entre la muchachada del romance entre un cantante millonario y un chico huérfano jugador de futbol. Hay que aclarar que zetsuai todavía mantiene cierta cordura ya que después la autora se deschaveta completamente..
Tengo nostalgia y buenos recuerdos. Lo recomiendo.

This volume is mostly an introduction into their lives and personalities. Don't expect them to be madly in love with each other at first sight. Although, with Kôji this is exactly the case. But, I've found them appealing and conflicting; you can see that their love story won't be easy, wich, for me, is a good thing. I don't like it easy. As long as they have their HEA I can bear some drama.
I'm reading volume 2 and liking it so far. So I just say: give it a try. Appearences can be deceptive.

Je retombe dans du yaoi avec un grand classique des années 90. Le choc des dessins à peine finis et des mentons sans fin ! Le postulat de départ est marrant car il se méprend sur l'identité de la jeune fille qu'il avait vue étant jeune et de découvrir que c'est un homme va totalement le déstabiliser car il éprouve tout de même une attirance très forte pour lui.
Ce jeu de perturber une star de showbiz qui est complètement déconnectée de ses sentiments est un classique du genre qui reste sympathique.

Ho visto passare questo manga nella mia dash qualche giorno fa e mi è venuta voglia di rileggerlo dopo secoli, perché è uno dei primi yaoi della mia vita. Il tratto grafico è unico e la storia resta piacevole.
