Reign of a Billionaire is book four in Eva Winners' Billionaire Kings series. A series which follows a different leading man in the mafia world down his own dark, debauched and dangerous journey, often picking up a woman on the way whom they weren't expecting, didn't want or tried their best at resisting their temptations.
Previously in books one to three in the series, we saw the Ashford brothers in abstract but with this and Secrets of a Billionaire , we're getting an up-close-and-personal look at them, their lives, secrets and more. Winston and Billie continued this series with their own explosive, dramatic and breath-stealing story in book three, setting us up nicely for the next Ashford brother to stroll in, take over and begin a brand new reign on our bookish hearts.
Thankfully not a great deal of time has passed since our last instalment in the series--a month, give or take--, so everything is still fresh in our minds with where things were left. At least, that is what happened with me. Eva's books are memorable among the many wonderful things about them. That said, as with every book I've been lucky enough to read of hers, she always does a brilliant spoiler-free recap of things. Just in case you jump a book or two ahead even if each read is a standalone in the series. She also has a series connection map on her social media if you'd like to know how each book/series is linked to another. I've found it handy with every updated version with a new release added to it.
Kingston has been much of a mystery of a man right from the very first mention of him in the series. It was unknown to us--until now--as to what happened to him, what he went through and how he came to be back in their underworld. All the questions and theories we've all been having about him, have been answered here by Eva, telling Kingston's story with one badass woman in tow. Albeit unplanned for and unexpected, things are set to get even more interesting from their 'first' meeting, right until we turned the last page.
Kingston's reign has begun, and it's starting off on a broody, bloody and brutal start.
Though slow to get going, things soon sped up and kicked into the only gear that any of the Billionaire Kings know how to do things in. Overdrive. They don't do things by halves or at a relaxed speed, and Kingston is following on in their footsteps with his on style, flair and unhinged dynamic. He's everything dark, dangerous and ruthless that we love about a leading man, a mafia man and one of Eva's MMCs. But will he change or his life change--for good or for worse--when 'Liana Volkov' puts herself permanently in his timeline of events.
Will he share his reign of terror and torture with her? Or does he only work alone? That, you'll all have to discover yourselves when you read their story.
Kingston's skills are unparalleled. From a young age, his mind, body and soul was crafted into something lethal and unquestionably deadly. There's only one purpose he's been put on this planet to achieve and carry out, and that is obliterating the kingdom that was singularly responsible in taking more than his innocence away from him.
His path crosses with someone--a ghost--from his past, leading to finding himself being ensnared into the web of a woman who is not only the daughter of someone lethal within the world he operates in, but is also a dark, painful reminder of one of the only lights in his life that he has long-since lost. She is an ice princess with the most murderous of plans. An unstable killer with thanks to her genes, a face of an angel. A deadly, unhinged woman on the inside, a temptress on the out. Something Kingston is finding it harder by the day, not to be entranced by.
Distractions aside, something brings Kingston's attention back into focus on the task at hand. Something big is happening within the underworld that has raised and shaped him. Realities of those within it are being shattered into millions of pieces, deadly games are being played on all fronts, and every day that passes there is something going on to continue the tearing apart of their kingdom right from within the bowls and belly of the beasts that run it. Just to begin with. As per the life of the underworld--if you compare it to hell--there are so many layers and a never-ending number of beasts and threats to be slain.
What was once was clear, now lies very blurred. The clear distinction between enemies and allies is clear no more. There's no way of knowing, or trusting, who aligns with who, what their true intentions are and if those who you trust will have you back, or stab it without hesitation. Mysteries that have spanned various lengths of time are unravelled, laid bare for all to see. Histories and pasts clash with one another and the desires that have been contained are no longer held back but are let free to consume those who let it take over them. Kingston and Liana are no exception to this, desire holds them in its firm grip.
Though the underworld has been a place where nothing is certain and where anything can happen, everything is off the table, cards are being held firmly to chests, and nothing is as it seems. Not even the most in the know within this world could predict or expect what could happen next. For someone like Kingston who is a born survivor, this may be the one time that his luck of survival runs out for good.
We're four books deep now into this five-book series, and my love for it continues to grow rather than falter. Kingston is our third Ashford beside Winston and Byron, and there's something about these Ashford men that has all of us in such a chokehold. They are so unique in themselves that despite being brothers, they differ as much as they are the same. Kingston is just as ruthless as his brothers, but there is definitely a whole new level of it by nature of what he went through compared to them.
I did guess the big twist in this story from early on in the book, which is definitely not a flaw or fault of Eva's, it was just a guess from myself as a reader that by sheer luck, proved to be true. Had I not guessed it, I would've been as shocked at it by those who were, who didn't guess. This doesn't happen very often for me, as I usually just try to enjoy the book I'm reading without deep analysing it too early on, but my Jessica Fletcher persona was working overtime and guessed it quickly. That said and despite that, I had a great time in journeying along to find out how that big twist came to be. Eva's writing was more than enough to carry me to that point and I still enjoyed getting there, even though I knew the outcome. It felt like being on the inside of a big secret and I was watching Kingston find out the truth. Seeing how he found out and how he reacted? Worth guessing it early and then some.
Reign of a Billionaire brought everything I know and love about both this series, and Eva Winners. It was dark, it was dramatic, it was full of the raw gore, blood and guttural that we dark romance lovers crave when reading mafia/dark romance books of this nature, and I'm never left short when its one of my must-read, favourite authors telling the story.
Where I have my current favourites within this series, I have a feeling that what is left to come, for the grand finale, will be the best yet. Call it gut instinct.
Kingston, Liana & Eva, what a performance! x
