White Mage, Eres, had been surviving, stranded in the middle of nowhere in a little house with an abusive husband. When two Virin come in one night and kill him, everything changes. Agreeing to allow the Virin and two Elves to escort her to Shadowfel, the Mage city of Acaria, is a choice that alters the course of her life forever. The party makes an unexpected discovery on the way, picking up a stray thief who’s determined to shake the foundation of everything. Both young women try to find their place in the group of extraordinary people life put them with, struggling with personal demons and attraction alike. But a refusal or inability to fit threatens to tear them apart before they truly attach to the party at all.
C. Miller lives in Kentucky and has been writing books for more than a decade. She believes books are magical things, transporting readers to other worlds and allowing them to live, laugh, love, and learn with the characters. She loves dogs, beautiful days, and working hard. When not working, you can usually find her playing video games, crocheting, or enjoying those beautiful days that come.
Whispers in the Dark continues the journey of Zelara, Lor, and Hale, but with two new characters that join the group. As with the previous books in the Carved Legacy series, this installment delves deeper into the complexity of relationships, personal struggles, and the intricacies of each character's background.
What I like about this series, is the way Miller addresses difficult and often delicate topics. Instead of simply describing emotions or relationships in a basic, two-dimensional way, she brings everything to life with depth and nuance. You can really feel the internal battles of each character, and it’s refreshing to see the story explore themes like personal demons, attraction, and identity with care.
This book had a slower pace than the previous ones. There was less action, and instead was more focused on dialogue and character development. We get to learn more about the different races, their history, customs, and even their everyday struggles. It was fascinating to see how each character’s past shaped them, and I really appreciated the emphasis on understanding and navigating these differences.
The relationship between Zelara and Eres stood out to me. Their dynamic was heartfelt and authentic, and it truly made my heart happy to see them connect in their own way. Zelara's straightforwardness, especially when it came to offering hard truths, is also a highlight. We could all use a little Zelara advice now and then.
To me, the underlying story of Whispers in the Dark is about the importance of living authentically.
I am surprised that the reviews are not more on this book....you simply cannot leave off this amazing series at book TWO, so join in for the rest of the story.....
In this the adventure and learning continues as we adding two new people to the group. The question then is, will they choose to be part of this new found family or will they threaten everything that has been built up to this point? Will their addition break apart the fragile new beginnings of family and friendship?
As with the others in this series Miller addresses topics and themes that are sometimes difficult to put into words and rather than simply describing emotions, settings or characters in a two dimensional way Miller brings them all to life. So slowly, and with such excellent thought the reader doesn't even realize they've been swept in until they are left thinking on the deeper themes and how the stories of everyone involved resonate with some part of the reader's life.
