Dire news arrives from Cantington. Rumors of dragon sightings are stirring up fears based on old stories that depict dragons as bloodthirsty, fire-breathing monsters. To protect his people, the Overking decrees that all dragons must die.

Twelve-year-old Eliana knows the truth about dragons. After all, her best friend, Winston, is one! Fresh off an adventure where she saved her kingdom with her ability to communicate with Winston’s family, she is now excited to hone her skills through her Dragon Speaker apprenticeship. That is until she begins having a recurring nightmare of a scar-faced soldier, a poison-tipped spear, and an orb that glows in the dark. What’s even more worrisome is that Winston is having the same nightmare.

When they hear of the Overking’s decree, they realize their dreams may not be a coincidence. Eliana must quickly learn how to use her ability to understand dragons to help new friends and old solve a mystery about an ancient treasure and save the dragons from certain death. Along the way, there are lessons to be learned about the dangerous desire for fame, about the transitory nature of plans, and about how treasure can mean different things to different people…and dragons.

I read this book as a nightly read aloud with my daughters (7&9). We enjoyed the first book in the series and were excited for this one. We enjoyed this book too. My girls say they loved it. I would have given it 5 stars were it not for the last 100 or so pages. The book went from an exciting story to a dud of an ending. The author seemed way too focused on the lesson she wanted to teach and the message she wanted to share and forgot she was writing a story not a sermon. Her “lesson” got really repetitive. The story built up to the climax and then meh. All the sudden the characters started saying things, to teach the lesson, that did not seem like things they would say or think. The big reveal wasn’t a big reveal, it was just rushed and boring.

This is a wonderful series. I am really enjoying it. I love the authors very clever use of imagery throughout and all of it topped off with very satisfactory endings, even if just for now.
I enjoyed getting to know all of the characters. You connect to them from the start of the series but then each one is building more and more.
I have come to really enjoy Laura Findley Evan's writing style. A wonderful YA Fantasy world and another great installment.

Wheeee, what a ride!
I love how this book gets going after a couple of chapters in, it really picks up pace with many twists and turns of the plot after reintroducing us to the characters and the world.
This book has plenty of action in it, and plenty of danger and mysteries to navigate. It’s hard to put down. Well done.

If you enjoyed the first one this is even better. Expands on the lore. Good fantasy option for kids or young adults.
