The Little Girl I Always Wanted

Rate this book
It’s as if my heart is bursting out of my chest. Nine-year-old Jubilee, our new adopted daughter, is beaming. She’s the little girl I always wanted and we’re finally taking her home.

Three months later.

‘This can’t be happening,’ I say. ‘She can’t be gone. She’s just a little girl, our little girl. She was here in her bed last night. I remember. I . . .’

I feel the panic rising, my worst fear surfacing. What if I brought her home — only to be taken?

Jubilee is not the first girl to go missing in our town. They found a body out in the cornfield — bones broken, a beautiful young girl gone.

Our community has already lost so many daughters. Mine cannot be next.

Nine year old Jubilee has been adopted into a loving home with five new siblings and she can't believe her eyes and heart when she sees her new home and surroundings. Her very own bedroom and a set of gentle, loving new parents who have chosen her to be part of their wonderful family.

Unknown to Jubilee, all is not as stable as appearances suggest and there have been young girls gone missing over the years in this particular county. When the family's close friends' fifteen year old daughter goes missing, all the neighbors are in shock and fear while never expecting that a few days later one of their own beautiful daughters will also become one of the missing.

How could this safe community become a place of nefarious dangers when it was always the best place to settle down and raise a family. Can it be a stranger in their midst or is the predator a "wolf in sheep's clothing" who is kidnapping their daughters who are never to be seen again?

An entertaining and interesting domestic mystery that had my attention in the beginning. The storyline was filled with unanswered questions and may be a puzzle to many readers although I figured it out (the villain or villains) pretty early due to some obvious "hidden in plain sight" clues. A quick read and though a dark subject I found the the adult characters very flat and I was unable to connect to their emotions since many of their reactions were inappropriate and stilted for many of the situations (imo). All the parents were too flawed in their behaviors with the way they were handling their children's needs and problems, sometimes they held too strict a rein and other times the parents were just lax or cavalier in the care of their children and what they were doing. I loved all the kids and the parents not so much!

There were just way too many consistencies for my liking especially with the dark nature of the book. Sometimes the families almost felt almost cult-like in some of the women's subservient attitudes with their husbands and the style of clothing they wore yet it surprised me that they all had cell phones which didn't align with all the old fashioned mannerisms that were confusing and off-putting to me because I wanted to know more about some of the characters personal histories and I just never found the answers I was looking for within the story. I know many readers will enjoy this book but it just wasn't the best one for myself.

I do recommend this story to other mystery readers and base their own opinions because there have been many terrific reviews written for this book.

I want to thank the publisher "Joffe Books" and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this digital copy and any thoughts or opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!

I have given a rating of 2 1/2 CURIOUS AND DISAPPOINTING 🌟🌟🌠 STARS!!

Thank you libro.fm for a copy! 🎧
The narrator’s did an excellent job with this story. I definitely would recommend the audiobook!
The story is fast paced and a quick read.
I enjoyed this book but there was just something missing for me. I wish there was more of an investigation and I also have some unanswered questions. But there were some good twists and I’d still recommend this book!

This book has a very juvenile writing style. The pros are very basic and the dialogue is stunted. I’m going to keep reading as I’m only 28 pages in but it’s not the best.

I will update when finished.

Honestly, I would say skip it. It’s not great.

Also, there’s two errors on page 28. Susannah’s husband is named terry but it says josh twice.

Update!

This book was not for me.

It’s full of basic pros, stunted dialogue and a million errors. The story was obvious from the beginning, I knew who the kidnappers were from the second chapter.

Every single character was flat. I’m sorry, I know this was someone’s hard work, but a lot more needs to be put into this book.

It took me so long to read it. I was forcing myself to finish it, on hopes it would get better. But even the reveal was lack luster.

The main error was the author kept writing Josh instead of terry when they were talking about Suzanna and her husband.

Thank you NetGalley and Joffee Books for the chance to read this ARC!

While I found the story interesting, this is the last book I will read by this author. I’ve read a few of her books and they are riddled with errors. From spelling mistakes to grammar and just straight up wrong words. The first time she introduced Mason she calls him Jonas?? Which isn’t even a character in this book. The rest of the book she refers to him as Mason. Then she says it’s easy for Jubilee to run away because she has a first floor bedroom but then later she stomps “up” to her room? She also says Josh and Susannah several times even though it’s clear she means Terry and Susannah.
These are just the few that stood out the most, but there’s plenty more. I know it could be seen as trivial but the writing is just as important as the story in my opinion and this fell immensely short in the writing department. 2.3/5 stars

I can't believe how stupid the big reveal was. Did I miss something? They kidnap and keep children cause they want a bigger family? A family they don't speak to, don't homeschool, keep drugged for most of the day, and constantly yell at and torture? What???

So basically you only wanted a bigger family just to feed like some feral cats? That's why you kidnap children? Make it make sense. I was sure it was some sick twisted sex thing but they just wanted more kids?.....whom they didn't take care of? Surley, I missed something....

I deliberated so long about how to rate this book, and came to 2 stars, which I don't like doing. I have never read anything by this author, and as I was deliberating, I looked at her other books and see they are rated highly. This was a total miss with me.

Josh and Annie have 5 children who are growing up. One has already left to serve in the military. Annie is a star at home mom who home schools and whose entire life revolves around her children, her husband and church. So, as the youngest is getting older, she feels the need to adopt. Her and Josh adopt a little girl, Jubilee who is 9 and has been in foster care. Jubileee overhears her new parents talking and feels like she is a burden to them so she runs away.

In this meantime, 5 local girls have gone missing over the years, the most recent is the best friend and love of her son. So when they cannot find Jubilee, they their newly adopted daughter has been taken.

The writing is stilted and juvenile. The family speaks to each other in the dialogue like robots, such as Look at what I have found. Is not it nice, and didn't flow nicely. Annie was over the top with her actions. She annoyed me to no end. 2 days after the daughter is missing, shes still making meals and feeding the family and sleeping at night. The husband stays home for a day, then is off, back to work. The ending was not shocking to me, I saw it coming a mile away. I am going to try another of her books as this just may have been one that didn't resonate with me.

Thank you to Joffee Books and Netgalley for the ARC. I greatly appreciate it. I do not recommend this book.

At first I thought this book was too far fetched..It was all a bit strange, these women sewing their own clothes and leaving decisions to their husbands "the head of the house" Surely no one lives like that nowadays. Then I realised I was looking at it from a UK point of view and that there were several communities and religions in the US that do live like this. After that I began to enjoy the story. I did think the local police were a bit complacent about the fact that over the last ten years several young girls had gone missing, the most recent just three months before. To be fair they were invested in the recent disappearance of Leah and really pulled out the stops when Jubilee went missing but it seemed to me that their attitude towards the older cases was well we tried, let's move on. I enjoyed the book but I thought the end was a bit predictable, or maybe I just read too many books.. I have read work by this author before and really liked them but I thought this one was pretty average. All the same it won't stop me looking out for her books in the future.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book

The suspense and action was written and expressed extremely well and timed perfectly, and is definitely worth the read! I was so immersed in the book and finished it in less than a day.

The Little Girl I always wanted by Anya Mora

As a part of the ALC program by @librofm I connected once more with the talented Anya Mora and read her latest novel. Such a ride!

Anya Mora has an extraordinary way of dealing with motherhood and all the fears that come with it. It’s deep, so profound and full of love how she portrays a mother’s feelings towards her children and also how she takes us readers to question our own motherhoods and how we approach different topics in our lives.

Are we too pushy? Are we over protective? Did we become mothers simply to fulfill a personal need? All those uncomfortable questions, all the answers we keep to ourselves.

Mora presents us with a story of kidnapping, desperation and death. Mourning and going all the way to find the monster behind the cornfields.

What happens when the monsters look just like me and you? Unbelievable plot twist!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Missing girls but no bodies....

This was an audiobook listen for me and made all the more enjoyable because of the four narrators, who really made the story their own. It became quite apparent from the beginning that the majority of this small community has had a strict religious upbringing and continues to follow their faith. The wife's role was to bring up the kids and look after the house, and absolutely everything has to be run past their husbands first. I appreciate that there are many, many communities in the US that put their faith above everything, but I don't think I've read a book that focuses highly on this, not one set in the 21st century anyway.

I worked out pretty early on who the bad guy was going to be, but that didn't spoil the enjoyment at all. There were still plenty of moments when I nearly changed my mind, as every now and then the plot took a diversion! A great story with underlying themes of grief and the difficulties of motherhood.

Thank you to Libro FM and Vibrance Press for the opportunity to listen to and review The Little Girl I Always Wanted by Anya Mora.

I have read a few of Anya Mora’s books and they are alway brilliantly twisty - no exception here, a great plot line 👏🏻

I could really relate to Annie and the other women; having given their all to being devoted wives and mothers; now that their children are grown up, is that enough?

There was a lot religious obsession running alongside the main plot and I was wondering what the relevance of this would be to the story - it didn’t end up being relevant to the crime and it made me squirm a bit as it was verging on cult level.

Without that, it would have been another five star read for me, but I find the religious fantasy aspect too disturbing and it deflected my mind away from what was otherwise a very well planned out plot line.

3.5/4 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Anya Mora and Joffe for an ARC in return for an honest review.

This was a puzzling murder mystery that had me guessing until the end. But I didn’t find myself enthralled mainly because I found Annie’s reaction to everything rather annoying. Her lack of panic upon discovering Jubilee, her newly adopted daughter, missing was especially dumbfounding. Particularly given the circumstances of having just attended a wake for Leah, a friend of the family and girlfriend to one of Annie’s sons, whose mutilated body was just discovered. This on top of the information that there were other girls missing from the area. I also felt the conversations were stilted. And all those “I love you”s had me rolling my eyes. There was very little about the police procedures other than interviewing the families.

A disappointing read.

Annie wasn’t ready to stop being a stay-at-home mother, so she adopted a beautiful 9-yr-old girl, Jubilee, making them a family of 8. Life was mostly good, with slight hiccups that are normal after adopting a child that was in foster care. But their world instantly changes when Jubilee goes missing one night; not too long after a girl’s body has been discovered in their town. Jubilee is now missing girl number 6. Will they find her before it’s too late?

This book captivated me from the beginning and is definitely addictive. I couldn’t wait to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. I guessed the twist and got it wrong 😂. Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC!!

I may be in the minority but I actually did enjoy this book. I really liked the storyline and the characters, I was constantly trying to suss the characters out which made me want to continue reading to the end.

The story follows Annie, a devoted mother to five kids whose children are growing up fast and are now young adults or teenagers. She has a lot of love to share so her husband David and her decide to adopt 9 year old Jubilee.

After three months, Jubilee goes missing, just as one of Annie’s son Josh’s best friend- Leah turns up dead after going missing. Now Jubilee is the 6th girl to go missing, will they find her in time? And what happened to the other 4 girls…

This missed the mark for me. The writing lacked depth and emotion, and the dialogue was stilted. I know this is an advanced copy, but there were numerous errors (particularly with Josh vs Terry) that I can't believe made it this far into the book. The story was predictable overall, and I had the kidnappers identified way too early in the story. Characters were one dimensional, and I just couldn't connect with them.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.

I liked this book. However, I felt it was very similar to Mora’s other book “A Perfect Family”.

There were a lot of repeated sentences, especially “I smile.” and the whole “I love you / I love you more” bits.

There are also inaccuracies like the etymology of the word “spelling” and that Ted Bundy was a a “rape hotline” volunteer. He wasn’t a rape hotline volunteer, he was a suicide hotline volunteer. Ann Rule had confirmed this as she had shifts with Bundy…

I digress. It was an “okay” story. So far, Mora’s books are very readable if you can look beyond certain things…

THE LITTLE GIRL I ALWAYS WANTED is a book set in a religious fundamentalist homeschooling setting. Annie is one of the wives in this community and has recently adopted a daughter, nine-year-old Jubilee, who goes missing one day.

Jubilee is the 6th girl to disappear in their community over the past ten years, and in fact, another girl, Leah, had just disappeared six months before and has just turned up dead, but no one panics, there is no big police investigation… and I was having a hard time finding this story plausible even though I normally enjoy this author’s books.

It was not hard to guess the culprits in this one from the first time they are introduced on page. I found it highly implausible that six girls of the same age would all go missing from the same community over a ten-year period and there would not be a massive search and a huge investigation that would have uncovered the truth. 3/5 stars.

Flojito.

I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read with an unexpected ending. I'll definitely be looking out for more books from this author and would recommend them to other thriller fans.

The only negative was that there were a few parts where names were mixed up which was slightly confusing.(Suzannah's husband "Terry" and Annie's son "Josh" being mixed up were the two I noticed a few times.)

Amazing book.

This is a fantastic book. I was trying to figure out what was going on but there were so many twists and I was usually wrong. This continues throughout the whole book and the ending something you will be mulling around for quite some time. I'm now on to the next book by this author and you will want to also. Fantastic!!!

This had all the makings of a good thriller with cultish vibes but it fell short for me. The writing could have been much stronger and while the plot was intriguing it wasn't enough to get past the elementary feel overall.

A really quick and easy read. It is a decent thriller but very surface eleven. We don't have much depth from the characters and the conversations and reactions are a bit..... bland. It's a decent enough book but i wouldn't rush it to the top of my to be read pile
