I bought this book after only reading one page of it on TikTok. I did not know how long it was or whet it was even really about. Still, when the book finally came in the mail, I couldn´t wait to start reading.
The setting of the book intruiged me. I mean hello? A powerful woman, that can talk to dragons falls in love with a dragon riding prince, whos best friend is a gay pirate???!!!! This can only turn out well and I did enjoy the story, it was captivating and mooving. However I am still only giving this book 3 stars (technically 3.5 but yk goodreads...) because I did have a couple things that I couldn´t overlook while reading this book.
1. telling but not showing
I feel like the author of this book has all of her characters personalities and backstories worked out to great detail yet failed to show them to us properly. The characters in the book keep describing their own or other peoples personalities, which is something I feel is kind of shallow and I struggle to really connect those characteristics to the decribed character. Imagine this: a person keeps telling you about themselves or one of their friends yet you never really experience them acting the way they are described. Do you really think this person is all the things you keep hearing about them? I would find it hard to believe and it is the same way in the book.
2. do you not remember you´re not alone??
Elarie is very closed of and usually consideres every little fact she tells people about herself and especially who she tells them to. However from time to time she starts talking to for example Calix in group sitiuations as if they´re alone. Usually the things she reveals lead to some sort of conflicts with the other group members because it was something you´d think she really wouldn´t want them to know. Like hello? Just because you´re having your little moment with Calix doesn´t mean everybody else just magically disappears.
3. Nothing yet so much going on
At times while reading the book I had the feeling that the author doesn´t really know where they´re going with the story. It feels like multiple ideas of what could happenon their journey just mashed one after another with no real story. Its always OMG were all gonna die and then after they resolve that issue everything seems totally fine again until they stumble into the next thing. There is no goal they´re really working towards just little specks of motives so their actions seem at least somewhat reasonable.
Eventhough some of these things really got to my nerves while reading I will probably still read the next book in this series and I have also already ordered The Great Dragon because I am optimistic these things can get better with the next books especially they now have a clear goal for book two. With this book being her first ever novel I see great potential for amazing books coming our way.
