Sea of Flames

Rate this book
Despite trust being the first thing to build when dealing with dragons and magic, Elarie Crosha is feared to be a monster sent to burn the pirate crew of the Greyscale alive, and not even the prince may be able to keep her from becoming just another horrible beast from the depths of the terrifying sea. If it weren't for her frightening ability to return from the dead, Elarie would be an asset to not only the Dragon Prince, but the captain with a dangerous magic brewing within him.Still, the prince is desperate for knowledge, and if he has to use a dragon to learn her secrets he'll make the best of friends. Elarie's connection to the great beasts is his key to understanding his own, making her his only hope for learning to ride and trust a frayed connection. As he finds that she isn't what he assumed Calix begins to lose his way, and a new friendship may lead to a split between himself, the crew, and his best friend.Even with god-like magic causing pain to run through his body, Kaelum finds it difficult to trust anything Elarie tells him about what he inherited. The captain doesn't trust her any more than he trusts the open mouth of the dragon sleeping on his deck, but he needs her. If he doesn't learn control quickly it could mean the death of his crew and the love of his life.Trust only proves harder to build as monsters of many creations battle the ship, and Elarie's secrets begin to unravel. Only a few weeks of growth may not be enough to save her budding relationships before it all burns down. Time runs out, even for immortals.

This sounds like a banger. 🔥
Booktok has its good sides and bad sids, but I love it the community comes together to elevate an author who’s been working so hard and to finally give them recognition they deserve. 🫶🏻

Sea of flames is a high fantasy book with dragons, pirates and immortals and it has queer, poc and disabled representation. I loved the characters and their relationships, and even though Terry worried me, I loved his relationship with Kaelum. This was one of my favourite reads of the year and I'm already thinking about rereading it.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.

This book is extremely good. It has a very good pace and I was kept interested the whole time. The characters are so complex and lovable. Even when they do something a little wrong, you can’t help but forgive them. It’s an adventurous journey with dragons and monsters and so much more. I highly recommend this read.

I bought the book because I saw Miss Peter's being excited about selling 10 books in a video on tiktok.

Best impulse buy ever. This book is an emotional roller-coaster, and honestly, Elarie is so relatable. 🔥
I can't wait for the sequel now.

I spotted 3 typos but otherwise the formatting is good.
I like the multiple POVs. And each character is consistent in its development. The story makes total sense, we get a MFC who is a badass and a MMC who knows when to insist and when to ask permission.

I'm all for it.

DNF. My ratings do not intend to define the quality of an author's work or affect the book's prestige. It is based solely on my experience while reading it. Throughout the book I realized I wasn't truly enjoying it, mostly because I'm not a fantasy/romance reader; but I will admit that, even though I don't consider myself active on those genres, the book had something different that captivated me at first - which had never happened before with a fantasy book. It just didn't continue to click with me afterwards.

I do want to point out that the narrative was hard to follow due to the lack of setting/environmental description. Sometimes I would be reading a whole chapter without knowing *where* it was all taking place at. Sometimes it was the beach, a ship and sometimes a random room with no characteristics provided whatsoever. That made it hard to the imagination, which is the fundamental aspect in fantasy books. Also, there was no sense of equilibrium. It was an intense read since the very first page, it starts with endless action. The importance of setting equilibrium chapters is for the climax of the story to be eagerly received.

I consider the characters to be just amazing. The main character is the exact definition of a strong, independent, kicking-ass woman which is something I always love. I truly admire integrating inclusivity without it feeling forced, taboo or uncomfortably -and sometimes ignorantly- written.

I know this book was self-published, which I applaud and think highly of, but still it would've been better to have it reviewed and corrected by an editor or philologist.

DNF - it’s seems like it could be a good story but the writing needs more work. My understanding is this is self published and so maybe it could’ve benefited from a professional editor.

WOW. Well done. I’m so glad I found this author on TikTok. This story was beautiful, emotional, downright hilarious at times. I already cannot wait for the second book to come out.

If you enjoy fantasy and SJM, give this book a shot! (No spice like SJM, but amazing regardless.)

This is Anneliese Peters’ debut novel, self published, and blown up by booktok. Her goal was to sell 10 books in the first month of publication; she is at over 1000 sales, and I have no doubt she will have many more. She deserves it for this beautiful story.

so pleased I gave this a go

Saw the author on book tok and wanted to show support for this first book. I really enjoyed the story and got very attached to all the characters. I am hoping for a second book

I suggest proofreading a bit more as I saw a frequent number of errors and typos. Second suggestion would be to word conversations differently. For example, oftentimes I was confused whether Calix or Kaelum was doing/saying something since “he” was used with no support as to who “he” was. That would’ve helped visualize the interaction between characters, in my opinion.

Dnf’ed at 36%.
The plot seems really interesting but the writing is not my cup of tea. I really tried to keep reading but couldn’t, might be because I wasn’t in the mood but it felt like I was reading for weeks and nothing was happening. I’ll give it a chance once again in a couple of months.

First of all my respect to the author for writing this book. It is a great achievement connected to tons of work and I am not trying to say that I could do better that her, I am just trying to give some constructive criticism.

I bought this book after only reading one page of it on TikTok. I did not know how long it was or whet it was even really about. Still, when the book finally came in the mail, I couldn´t wait to start reading.
The setting of the book intruiged me. I mean hello? A powerful woman, that can talk to dragons falls in love with a dragon riding prince, whos best friend is a gay pirate???!!!! This can only turn out well and I did enjoy the story, it was captivating and mooving. However I am still only giving this book 3 stars (technically 3.5 but yk goodreads...) because I did have a couple things that I couldn´t overlook while reading this book.

1. telling but not showing

I feel like the author of this book has all of her characters personalities and backstories worked out to great detail yet failed to show them to us properly. The characters in the book keep describing their own or other peoples personalities, which is something I feel is kind of shallow and I struggle to really connect those characteristics to the decribed character. Imagine this: a person keeps telling you about themselves or one of their friends yet you never really experience them acting the way they are described. Do you really think this person is all the things you keep hearing about them? I would find it hard to believe and it is the same way in the book.

2. do you not remember you´re not alone??

Elarie is very closed of and usually consideres every little fact she tells people about herself and especially who she tells them to. However from time to time she starts talking to for example Calix in group sitiuations as if they´re alone. Usually the things she reveals lead to some sort of conflicts with the other group members because it was something you´d think she really wouldn´t want them to know. Like hello? Just because you´re having your little moment with Calix doesn´t mean everybody else just magically disappears.

3. Nothing yet so much going on

At times while reading the book I had the feeling that the author doesn´t really know where they´re going with the story. It feels like multiple ideas of what could happenon their journey just mashed one after another with no real story. Its always OMG were all gonna die and then after they resolve that issue everything seems totally fine again until they stumble into the next thing. There is no goal they´re really working towards just little specks of motives so their actions seem at least somewhat reasonable.

Eventhough some of these things really got to my nerves while reading I will probably still read the next book in this series and I have also already ordered The Great Dragon because I am optimistic these things can get better with the next books especially they now have a clear goal for book two. With this book being her first ever novel I see great potential for amazing books coming our way.

I found this book on TikTok. The premise intrigued me a lot. The Author talked about it with lots of passion (as she should).

The Characters are colourful, the story pretty good, the world built with some missing details, but overall done pretty well.

The writing sometimes takes me out of the scene. Some scene's set up isn't always established very well and I really can't take Kallax shelve (not sponsored by IKEA) seriously. I didn't like that Kaelum didnt know shit about himself even if he is apparently this super powerful being and Elarie has to basically tell him everything.
Example: Right in the beginning. So you tell me this Bro, this Dude is captain of this ship that keeps saving slaves and has never seen this Jiiver storm ever before? Even though he is a Metar and the Darth Maul in Clone Wars-esque monsters clicker onto the boot and he still says "Nah man, I'm not a magic user..." even when these Jiivers can smell magic for hundred miles away.

I wished that names like Terry, Will, and John would have had more of the vibe of the rest of the names (but that's just nitpicking now).

The conversations sometimes feel cringe due to sentence structure or word choice. An native English speaking editor would have done wonders for this story.
Nevertheless, it holds a fond place in my heart because I respect self-publishing lots. Grey is also pretty cool ().

One more personal thing for me that people don't care too much about (this is not part of the rating), but if I had seen the cover in a book store, I probably wouldn't have bought the book. The Cover is a little messy and the fonts just aren't harmonising for me.

It wasn't for me and I probably won't read the next one in the series. Best of luck to the Author tho!

For a debut self published novel, this author did an amazing job! I original found her on TikTok and I’m so glad I did.

Yes the book does have its issues, some formatting, some character and story development, but you can see the author grow and learn as the story goes on. And most issues are just pretty common new author stuff - minor issues a good editor or two could help fix and improve.

This story has a compelling plot and in a world that is entirely new. I loved learning about the dragons and other creatures of this world. And although I think the characters could use a bit more depth/development to them, I honestly really liked reading from their various POVs. If you like the hard/cold exterior girl with the soft boy troupe this book is for you.

I’m honestly so glad I found this author and read her book. Also I head she’s writing a sequel and you better believe I’ll be getting that one too.

This is an Arc review.

Sea of flames is THE HIGH FANTASY BOOK OF 2024!!!
With dragons, pirates and immortals as well as queer, poc and disabled representation it is sure to hook you from the very start. I was absolutely enthralled by the way the author successfully portrayed queer, poc and disabled representation. I loved the characters and their relationships, however the beautiful bond between Elarie and her and Calix’s dragon was heartbreakingly beautiful. This was one of my favourite reads of the year and I feel so honoured to have had the privilege of ARC reading this book. Overall, I enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy, dragons, pirates and deep and interesting characters.

I can't wait to read further books from this author.

"The first time Elarie died it was on her birthday and it had been quite confusing. One moment, she’d been with the love of her life. She’d been guessing that the gift he planned to give her just before midnight, the last gift of the day, was to be a wedding ring."

I'm obsessed with this book. I consumed this 700 page book in 48 hours. I don't even know where to begin with this review but Elarie is in my top favorite FMC of all time. She felt real, realistic emotions and reactions to things going on around her and in her life. It was nice to see a strong FMC and cinnamon roll type MMC.

Pirates, dragons, magic and romance done so perfectly. 💛

Holy S**t

I rarely leave book reviews but DAMN was this a great read. The plot, the characters, the world building, the representation, everything was on another level. This book is addictive and through provoking and hands down the best book I've read in the last two years. A book hasn't made me cry since the 1st time I read that Hedwig died over 20 years ago. I don't have the words for how much I recommend this book and I am screaming that I have to wait for the next one.

DNF around 50%. I was really excited about this book from the reviews. However, I feel that the book was far too long. There were many parts of the book that I feel could have been cut, whether it be scenes that felt repeated or dialouge that added nothing to the character relationships or the plot. There were some typos and grammatical errors as well, which is a bit disappointing. However, I did enjoy the overall theme of what I read. It was creative and unique in its own ways. Everyone loves a good fantasy-romance, and I'm sure this book found its audience in others.

It started off shaky and then it got interesting... and then I DNF'd.

It was super frustrating that the prince was upset that she got revenge after being sacrificed??? After they literally stood there and watched it happen? They didn't seem to care AT ALL either. And the conversations that followed just made me so pissed off. I couldn't read anymore after that.

I think the author tried to write super complex characters, but the writing just wasn't there for it, and the dialogue just weak and lacking.

Honestly, it's like a really good wattpad book...

Oof, I'm honestly so disappointed I started off really enjoying this book but so many issues would be solved if the characters would just talk to each other like ugh and I also have no idea what was going during the ending fight scene, I couldn't tell if what she was seeing was real or if she was hallucinating until she like started talking to Calix it just was very poorly written. I know this was self published but there were a lot of grammar mistakes and just could've used a little more editing

I tried to love this book. I was really excited about it and couldn't wait to read it after reading some of the other reviews. I DNF'd it about 30% into the book. The writing left me a little confused and it felt like the story was jumping forward in a weird way. I'm going to give this book another try in a couple months because I rarely DNF a book. I will update my rating and review at that time.

I loved this book from start to finish! The characters are well written and the story moves along with no lulls. I love the way the author pulled in different types of characters that are not usually written into stories and she did it seamlessly. I cannot wait for book number two!!!

DNF. The writing style is horrible. Sad bc I feel like the plot has so much potential but I can’t get past the writing. It’s like it’s missing words, the punctuation is off, and the conversations between characters are hard to follow.
