About the author

Lyn Andrews is one of the the UK's top one hundred paper-back bestsellers. Born and brought up in Liverpool, she is the daughter of a policeman who also married a policeman. After becoming the mother of triplets, she took some time off from her writing whilst she raised her children. Shortlisted for the romantic Novelists' Association Award in 1993, she has now written twenty-one hugely successful novels. Lyn Andrews divides her time between Merseyside and Ireland.

What a great story! It's the story of Hannah, who has a terrible childhood. The book begins when she is six years old and her father has been called up to fight in the great war. Her mother died a few years before so now her father has a dilemma, leave Hannah with neighbours in Liverpool where their houses are already over full or take her to her mother's cousin in rural Wales. He chooses the latter but it has dire conciquiencies for Hannah.
A book that's well written and a good easy read, would recommend.

Heartbreaking but happy ending.. in between i felt it a bit stupid too but all make mistakes nd this book is the proof!!
If everyone is just stopping you from doing smthng then it must be for your good! Hannah did tht mistake but she still got the gift she wished to have!!
True love nvr end!! Nd so this book is the proof!! Loved this book!!♡♡♡♡

Little Hannah Peckham has just lost her mam and then her father has to go off to war so leaves her in the care of her cousin Gwyneth in Wales thinking she would be well looked after whereas in her native Liverpool she would only be under the care of neighbours but as soon as he is reported dead Gwyneth sends her to the workhouse.
After the generosity of someone in her father's regiment helps her escape the confines of the dreaded workhouse she goes to live the Hughes family where she finds work as a maid but she instantly falls in love with Master Richard and this love lasts a lifetime and when she is old enough, desperate to escape the house knowing she could never be with Richard due to class divides she embarks on a disastrous marriage with one of the local bad boys Alfie Duggan.
Can Hannah ever be happy and can she ever truly have what she wants in life? The love of the man she has loved since childhood.
A brilliant tale I couldn't put down, a wonderful sweeping, war epic that is a must for any historical / period novel fans.

I love this book. It's one of the first books I read more than 15 years ago that I still re-read at least once a year. It's so heart warming. It takes me to my happy place.
