They’ve gone plaid!

This book was hard for me to review. I really enjoyed the series and the world; however, this one felt like they went to ludicrous speed and then slammed on the brakes at the very end.

Everything felt rushed, almost like the authors just couldn’t wait to be done with this arc. I say arc, because they obviously left it open to new story lines since out of nowhere there are other dungeons and diving leagues in other countries! No mention of this anywhere that I recall, it was the 5 dungeons and that was the path. Now suddenly there are others all over! Completely makes Rico even more of a loser villain since his entire thing was being viewed as the best, he SHOULD have kept pushing to conquer them all and be the global best, not the best in his little corner of the world. He wanted to be the big fish in a little pond, and that is just stupid.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Ok so the MC plot armor was some of the thickest I have ever seen. An Armageddon style asteroid wouldn’t have cracked that crap.

Soul Devastation, this ultimate killing ability. Anyone hit by it is dead, do not pass go, do not get magically healed back to life. (Which btw, this is the first series I have ever seen where death is nothing. A basic bitch healing spell cures everything, even a decapitation!) This ultimate spell of death is a terror for everyone, except the MC! Here he comes, nightlights of destiny in hand and poof, good as new! Injuries from years ago, even reviving the dead from 20 years ago!!

Oh he loses his magic rock! We’re all screwed, they’re so rare! Wait, this path that no one ever takes can give him a better one! Incoming Jesus stone 2.0, now with better personality included!

The whole thing with his mom just felt ridiculous and extraneous. It didn’t really accomplish anything. Obviously they tried to inject some emotion into the story with it, but it was way too forced and trite.

Calista felt like just an after thought character. Oh look, another woman Rico wanted but couldn’t have. Now Jeremy has her!

Rico could come into peoples dreams, no explanation of where he got this ability, and he does it once. Villain monologue ensues, and then nothing else comes from this. Completely pointless.

All in all, the story was fun at times but also very annoying. In a way, I felt like I just sat through a crappy power rangers arc when I was a kid. Interesting but unfulfilling.

Summary:
This book has the same fun characters and classic good guys vs. bad guys adventure continued from the previous books, albeit with a very slow start, but the issues present in those previous books are even more present and abundant here. Recommended to finish off this arc, but if you weren't a big fan of the previous instalments you're not going to find anything here.

It's a shame that I have to end this trilogy with a mediocre review. I gave the first book high praise for being a back-to-basics dungeon diving adventure with a harem. There were issues, but they were easily glossed over when you look at the book as a whole. The second was still the same fun but the issues were a little more prevalent. This third and final book (for this arc) was more frustrating than fun.

To name a few of the issues: the rpg system is nonsensical and you'd lose nothing if you removed them; characters act like idiots or geniuses depending on what the current scene needs them to be; the magic system is essentially the same in that it follows the rules of the current scene and may or may not not match those established previously; a combination of plot convenience and plot holes is the glue which binds this book together, and so on.

I think my biggest gripe - one that even applies to the books I genuinely enjoyed - is that by showing characters being killed and revived in combat so often, we just stop caring at a certain point. Without going into specifics, the final battle should have elicited some serious heartache but instead it was just another in a long line of shrugs. Maybe - and that word is carrying a lot on its shoulders - it would have had more impact had the story not already established that a dungeon gem has the power to undo what happens.

The other major issue is that the first half of the book is really slow. With only one dungeon left and the team basically being in hiding and preparing, there's not a whole lot going on before they leave for the fifth and final dungeon and their battle with Rico. Given the length of this book, you could probably cut a good chunk of the first 45% and not lose anything but page count.

So yeah... I'm right in the middle of the rating line on this one. On the one hand it's still the same interesting scenario, classic good vs. evil story, and fun and genuinely entertaining characters. On the other all of the issues present in the previous books have been dialled up to 10 and expanded upon. I want to love it, but... its just not there.

I really liked this book. The Diving Daredevils spent time practicing, improving, and working hard. The DDC even brought in a person that had worked with Rico in the past to help them prepare for the final confrontation. It didn't seem like everything came easy for Daniel (The MC). He had to actually work and train. I liked the final dungeon dive and boss confrontation as well.
What I didn't like what happened after the final battle was won. It has been established in the last book and during all of this book that Rico only loves power and fame, he has to be number one. Anyone who threatens to eclipse his spotlight he has to eliminate. He has a diving team harem, but they are his possessions, and that's how he loves them. That is the biggest trait that distinguishes Daniel from Rico. Daniel dives for the love of it, but he loves his diving harem more then he loves his own life. So after the final dungeon is conquered along with Rico, those of the harem are talking about a vacation and retirement, because what else is there to do. That's when the new president of the DDC says that there are other dungeons in other continents. That is the first mention of such a thing in any of the three books. That makes Rico (who loves power and being the best) the big fish in a small pool, with much bigger pools out there and probably bigger fish. I still recommend this book though.

Was the book good?

I have enjoyed the story up till now, however the way it ended was just okay. I'm getting tired of some McGuffin causing the protagonist not to be powerful in these stories. Something is always causing them not to be at full power or their power is nerfed. I just want to see the opposition get slapped away with looks of disbelief on their faces once in awhile.

Alas, for this story the protagonist and his group is made to struggle through the use of plot devices and stupidity pills even though they are always described as being much better than average skill wise or overpowered. In the end, dues ex is needed to get them out of trouble or save the day. If the protagonist is supposed to.be strong, let him be strong. Find a different struggle such as personal interactions, introvert, lack of confidence, too arrogant, over steps abilities, politics, etc. If it is other people, stop making the antagonist so powerful that dues ex is required or give the protagonist brains to avoid or stop the antagonist. Also stop making the protagonist rile up the antagonist to create more struggle which is against the protagonist beat interest.

Last!y, if you kill off one of the main characters, let them stay dead. It's just the price the MC has to pay for the author making the MC too weak and requiring dues ex to save the day.

I don't know why I've now read three of these, well, I do, I wanted something mindless recently, this was still in my audible list and... Look, it's a book.

The spicy parts aren't great, so if that's your reason for looking, eh.

The rpg parts are downright nonsensical. There's no particular rules regarding the use of powers that make any kind of sense from chapter to chapter. The main characters have no combat sense - even after 'training' with the additional character. They gather up together while opponents are still on the battlefield and just ignore them (until they get shot). They have powerful new spells (which don't have limitations on use really), but don't use them except to finish something/one off AFTER the fight is basically won. Why not open combat with powerful spells?

I was mildly curious where this was going. It's done going, I don't have any more of these and won't be picking them up.

I continue to enjoy the adventures of Jeremy and the Daredevils. This book really escalates their training and abilities and brings the Rico story line to a climax. The book moves very well and I couldn't wait to see what the next chapter held. The
The story starts right after their previous Rico fight and the team hits the ground running. They level up, new skills and have a new member introduced to the team as a guide just before attempting the final dungeon.
The dungeon gem concept and story line was interesting and I will be looking forward to how the story line progresses and matures.
I am glad that the book ends with the concept of other dungeons in other lands to allow for the series and the Daredevils, to continue.

Meh. Wasn't the strongest series from the get-go and there was no increase in quality here. MC is an impulsive idiot who can't do what he needs to do even when he can figure out what that is. It also wasn't arc'd/paced well, as this entire book led up to one dungeon dive, and has too much recurring villain action for my taste.

The real failing of this book is how much I felt compelled to skim to get to something that mattered. A prime example: there was far more page-count taken up with sex scenes (the f-ing book ENDS on one) than I felt necessary. That wasn't the only thing, hence the weak rating. Not sure if this series is done, but it is for me.

Why is it that MC and his team are OP against any dungeon monsters like ever, but whenever they face off against Rico's bitch squad they get their asses handed to them over and over.

And wtf Jeremy, you dumb ass, you can literally cast invisibility and light step at any time to completely vanish during any battle, but fuck it, that'd be too easy. Gotta let your enemies see your dumbass to make it fair.

And hey, here's an idea, next time you injure one of your enemies, how about, oh i don't know, maybe casting your dispell when someone goes to cast healing light to undo all the damage. Like not even once? Not even trying it to see if it works?

The battles sucked.

Weirdly juvenile

The story is very juvenile and the plot watered down. This story is like a teenage boys wet dream. Not very brightly written and too many modern word usage not expected in a fantasy novel. I mean really? The writer talked about "phones" when there are NONE in this World-Universe. Just bad writing and the plot was ridiculous. The sex scenes way way way juvenile. Talking about breeding kinks and the like. Really pathetic. Hard pass on any future books from this author.

Finishes the story arc, but left open for a sequel

I was a little put off with the MC constantly saying he was going to kill his enemy as most heroes don’t look to end their nemesis, but bring them to justice. So the MC retires in less than 12 months, as the strongest dungeon diver in the country with enough money to live the rest of their lives, at the ripe old age of 20. Talk about a fast level up and story progression. Enjoyed the story overall. Thanks for the books.

Dungeon Heroes 1-3

The three books read well and the character building was great. The interaction within the group was entertaining. The plot and story line flowed very well, also. The only thing I found lacking were the spells, attributes, and the gems! Being an avid DnD as well as a role player since 1976, three above items were sometimes too strong and other times weak. Other that that all three books flowed a logical path and were very entertaining.

Good Read

Enjoying reading these books. Of course there's the teenage boy sex fantasy and the inconsistencies and sometimes the total stupidity of the characters. I mean who stops to talk in the middle of the biggest battle of they're lives and not pay attention to what's going on around them. I mean I had to put down the book and walk away for a bit. It was so annoying. But overall it was a decent read. Looking forward to the next book

Nice ending

The first half of the book just dragged. Way more set-up than needed and then we got to the fun part and the book just rocked.

I would have been happier if the book had ended at the restaurant.

Hoping we get a new progression in another league. That would be really fun.

I hope there are more

Great book and great ending to what I hope is the first of at least 7 ‘runs’. I hope there are at least 6 more books in this series if not more. The characters still have room for improvement/growth and I’d love to see what happens if the daredevils go diving in other countries.

Great Ending

This volume was well written with enough fighting, team building and intrigue. The addition of new characters and plot twists was well thought out. While I list this as an ending, that doesn’t mean the author didn’t leave enough potential openings for a fourth book.

Great book

Awesome book I enjoyed this story and all the characters there was a moment when I was super frustrated that they didn't protect better against soul attacks but it just added to the suspense I'm curious how this story will continue

The Third Dungeon, Nemesis Revealed & Defeated
Jeremy, Mira, Seraphina the Elf and Elise, now joined by Vaeda the Dryad continue their adventures and pursue their dream of conquering all the dungeons on their home continent.

The story starts with the whole group back in Jeremy’s hometown. They are all very worried that they’re positively identified enemy Rico will try to attack them through their various families. So the group is switching up between Jeremy’s mom’s house and Serafina’s mom’s house.

after some slice of life, domestic time and cool mechanics for dungeon diving practicing demonstrated, the group is visited by the head of the DDU. Cutting to the Chase the group has been identified as the only hope for combating Rico and saving the DDU and dungeon, diving as it’s known throughout the land. The organization is not strong enough, the team is my higher level than they are. Given a license to kill Rico and his team.

Moved to an undisclosed location in the middle of the night and introduced to a new trainer and former victim of Rico, Calista. She might turn out to be a team member but for now she’s a ruthless trainer.

of course Jeremy sees Calista‘s inner good and they become closer quickly. Rico attacks the camp killing many and kidnapping Jeremy‘s mother, heightening the need for the team to make progress to be ready to face him. They lose the dungeon stone to Rico’s team at the same time. Just when Jeremy was starting to unlock its powers.

The team’s hand is forced and they immediately head to the fifth and final dungeon, Serpent Hollows.

Good dungeon crawl with challenging puzzles and environments to work around using teamwork and special abilities.

Graveyard meeting with all the failed previous divers including Jeremy’s dad. All victims of Rico.

Rico’s team has an ability to somehow know location of Jeremy’s team, and the ability to teleport in and out through a gate. So they sometimes gate in to harass or attack them, and other times illusions presumably created by the Dungeon appear to be them gating in which keeps them on a state of paranoia / heightened alert.

Rico uses the Dungeon Ruby to force Jeremy’s mother to join his team and fight against Jeremy, simultaneously adding greatly to her powers. However, the Ruby is not his, so in retaliation it permanently burns most of his body, leaving him in a state of constant agony and disfigurement.

Jeremy has to solo a special side route inside the dungeon, with many challenges some psychological in nature. He does succeed, and is rewarded with a Diamond dungeon gem, which isn’t flawed like his ruby was.

There is a huge final battle between Rico and his team and Jeremy’s team, conveniently located by a graveyard so the dungeon ghosts can cheat Jeremey’s team on. In the battle Mira is permanently killed, beyond the power of the usual healing word. Jeremy’s team rallies, and he calls on the Diamond repeatedly, eventually defeating Rico and his team permanently, including killing his mother who had been passed by Rico’s stollen ruby.

He then demands that the Diamond heal Mira and his Mother because the didn’t deserve to die. Luckily the Diamond resurrects them, as well as restoring Jeremy’s dad, and aging him to an appropriate age for his son and wife.

Things are wrapped up neatly, with Mira’s father taking over the DUU. Things are left with the revelation that there are other countries who have their own dungeons available.
