The nation's breadbasket is crumbling. The journey home is a thousand miles. The choice is simple: survive or starve.
Tired of the usual post-apocalyptic fare? Welcome to your new addiction, from best-selling author Mike Kraus, writing with Marcus Richardson!
In a matter of days, America's breadbasket has turned to ash - not from fire, but from a botanical infection that spreads on the wind and can destroy thousands of acres of grain in an hour.
In Cold Valley, Wyoming, Pike Warren watches from his ranch as his small town spirals into anarchy and chaos. Torn between the love of his community and responsibility to his family, he has to make unthinkable choices, all while hoping his wife can somehow make it home safely.
A thousand miles away on Vancouver Island, Abby Warren's survival skills are being put to the test on a 'alone in the wilderness' reality TV show, but the dream of a lifetime quickly turns into a nightmare. Faced with an impossible decision to either wait for help or embark on a perilous journey home to her husband and children, she must navigate a crumbling society and find the strength to battle not just nature, but human nature as well.
Stranded in the Midwest while studying this new threat, USDA Field Agent Jordyn Wells races against time to find a cure to the disease that threatens to bring the nation to its knees. Friends are few and far between, enemies are around every corner, and her science may not be enough to keep the nation from succumbing to starvation.
The phage, has ravaged America's grain supplies, as savagery and desperation erupt on even the quietest streets. Key figures are Sheriff Walsh, trying to maintain law and order under extreme pressure, Jordyn, a USDA agent who hopes to find a counter-virus to save humanity, and Abby, a reality tv show competitor who must fight for survival with everything she has to save another's life and her own, as her husband Pike and their kids face their own challenges while battling the odds to make it home - and hoping Abby does too. As the country descends into chaos you'll be willing on the good guys and hoping the bad ones get their comeuppance soon. Marcus Richardson and Mike Kraus are Masters of the Post Apocalyptic Survival-Thriller and their riveting new series Ravaged Dawn's opener, Scourge, is guaranteed to grip you firmly by the imagination throughout.
Get it right now, to find out what happens next, as you can never be sure when disaster might strike - for real!
Scourge, like any other works involving Kraus and Richardson, is an outstanding first installment in a series about the repercussions of a crop blight and loosed bacteriophage wreaking havoc on crops in both the US and Canada. Panic is fueled by media misinformation and unsubstantiated rumors. Things go from bad to almost unbelievably worse in 72 hours. And Abby is still in Canada, trying to find her way back to her family, the reality TV show she was participating in having abandoned the contestants after their camp was wiped out by, most likely a grizzly bear. The ranch is attacked by robbers with the aid of a turncoat ranch hand, but the riders are unsuccessful. Most of the family is reunited post gunfight, but Abby is still separated with a Kong way o go. I can't wait to see where this series goes next. Highly recommended if you enjoy disaster/apocalyptic fiction, and those new to the genre as well! 5/5 stars! On to Reckoning (book 2)!
Great start to a new series by Mike Kraus - my 'go-to' post apocalyptic author - in collaboration with Marcus Richardson. He portrays people, their environments, and the disaster itself so well that you get carried away with the story and it's almost a physical pain when you get to the end - or, at least, it is for me!
This was really great! Everything you could want from a first book in an end of the world series! Great action & pace once it started, good ideas & a nice selection of interesting characters! I can't wait until the next part! A great read!
Another amazing series with two talented authors. There’s a botanical virus that will have you gripped and wanting to know what could possibly happen next. What will happen to the grain and how will it affect the food for people. Impossible to stop until you get an answer.
This is a series not to be missed with Scourge taking off at a gallop. I was swept up from the first page with characters that stand out and all the other good stuff shining. It really felt like I could be there!
The characters are well developed. The family love and ready to work together. A group of thieves ready to steal. The world has changed and now they need to get ready for another battle. One to get home the others to protect that home.
What a story! I never thought about a failure to provide safe crop products could result in such a dramatic failure. This series is going to cause me to lose sleep!
I generally find a premise of technology gone awry rather interesting. The inclusion of contestants in a show called Abandoned (echoes of Naked and Afraid/Survivor) was a bit off the wall, though Abby was a trooper. I was also a little put off that a group of sly thieves would have left Aspen and target a sparsely populated county of Wyoming. They morph into wannabe warlords by trying to take over a ranch. Just didn't seem right. USDA agent Jordyn is not a practical thinker so I have not much hope for her. I am curious, though, as to how this bacteriophage issue will be solved.
