Kathleen comes from a family of writers, poets, and journalists- though she may be the one shameless romantic in the bunch. A true Cancer, she values home and family above everything and wouldn't dream of ditching a single friend, memory, gift, or love letter. Consequently, her office is a mess, full of books, colored cut glass, photo albums, Madame Alexander dolls, and a cockatiel who whistles the theme from "The X Files." She is addicted to Mozart and Elvis, Dancing With the Stars, Dorothy Dunnett novels, and sugar-free Popsicles.

Re Trial By Seduction - Kathleen O'Brien's last HP outing before she does one HP Subscription and then moves onto to HQN Super Romance and mainstream contemporary romantic suspense, is a moody, evocative tale of a woman in search of a resolution to her past.

Like all K O'B books, it is set in the United States, this time we go to the Florida Keys. Where HP shades of the Kennedy brother's tragedies seem to infuse the mists that drift in from the sea and wrap everything they touch in a haze of dreamy half realities.

The h is 22 when the book opens and we meet her walking along the beach in front of a classic Florida Key's Hotel - not one of the big modern whitewashed resorts, but a classic, old style Islamorada Hemingway kind of hotel, that I imagine looks something like Pierre's at Amara Cay.

In fact the hotel is called the Moonbird Hotel, based on a legend that originated from one of it's rooms, and the Cay it occupies is called Moonbird Cay.

The h is ostensibly there as the assistant to a world famous photographer with Parkinson's, who is doing a coffee table book on the best of the Florida hotels, but she is a fully accredited photographer in her own right, and has several kudos to her name, even tho she is not very old.

She also has a tragic past and as she walks along the beach and starts to sob, we learn that when she was 12 and her older, glamorous sister was 18, their parents brought them to Moonbird Cay for a family vacation.

There were three debonair and handsome young men running about the place. The Moonbird was, and is still, their family's hotel and during the h's stay, the three young men were budding lady buffet samplers that the h's sister had to try her luck with.

It ended in tragedy when the h saw her sister sneak out of their room window one night, assisted by one of the three young men who all had Moonbird tattoos on their wrists. The h never saw the young man's face as he and her sister stole away, but the h definitely recognized the tattoo.

Sadly the sister never returned from her midnight jaunt and the next morning it was decided that she went for a midnight swim and drowned, her lifeless body was found battered by the swells in the shallows the next day.

The h lost her entire world when her beloved, but reckless older sister died. Her parents divorced and then remarried and started new families right away. The h grew up always feeling slightly displaced and full of curiosity and pain about what really happened that night.

The h KNEW that one of the handsome, flirty young men was with her sister and she can't help but wonder if maybe something more sinister happened in depths of the darkness. Two of the young men were brothers and the third was their semi-wild cousin, the h is thinking that maybe one of them got carried away and tried to push the sister farther than she really wanted to go and tragedy was the result.

The h did tell the police about what she saw, but she was twelve and the brother's alibied each other and the wild cousin did not care what anybody thought and denied ever seeing the h's sister that night.

The h's story was disregarded, because all the main players where adamant that they were nowhere around and the h has had to live with that and her own guilt for not stopping her sister for all of these years.

All three of the now ten years older men see the h crying on the beach and all three of them are very much the continual lady buffet sampler type. Even tho the oldest is married to an HPlandia Jackie O type and the younger brother is a hopeless, womanizing alcoholic.

The wild cousin is now the richest of the three of them and K O'B lets us know that his success is a bit ironic.

It seems the wild cousin's father was a family member too, he embezzled a lot of money from the hotel and had some bad behavior moments before running off. The wild cousin was taken in by his uncle, but there was always suspicion and mistrust surrounding him as he grew up. Everyone was waiting with baited breath to see if he was as despicable as his father.

Fortunately the wild cousin got all the financial brains in the family and when his uncle gave him a one way ticket and twenty thousand dollars when he turned 18, (along with an invitation to the world,) the H parlayed that into a huge fortune.

Ten years on the wild cousin H owns 51 percent of the Moonbird Hotel and has 40 acres of wetland set aside as a bird sanctuary and conservation area. The brother's are relegated to minor share holders in the H revamped and refurbished Moonbird and the oldest brother is attempting to start a political career by getting himself elected to the House of Representatives.

The H sees the h and is immediately drawn to her and wants to instinctively dry her tears. He is very teasing and flirty and she is very reserved and polite. When the famous photographer asks the H to take the h around and show her the best photo sites, the H gets lots and lots of time to try and get her to succumb to his lurve force mojo passion.

The h is reluctant to get involved, distance, reserve and safety are pretty much a way of life for her after the chaos of her teenage life. The famous photographer is very much a father figure for her, so she is also reluctant to leave the increasingly ill man on his own.

However the famous photographer has met a lovely lady and is having what is probably going to be the last fling of his life. So he gets the H to escort the h around and because he is an artist with an excellent instinct for personalities and people, our wily photographer does his very best to get the H and h together as a couple.

He isn't obvious about it, but as he explains to the H, there is a whole lot the h doesn't know about herself yet and it is very clear that the H is a reluctant moth to the h's flame, so they should do their explorations persistently together.

The H takes up the challenge and soon the h's eye for color photography is bursting into life. Which impresses the h a lot, because prior to Moonbird Cay, the h's best work was always in black and white.

(The h's artistic development in her photography is symbolic of her maturation during the story and K O'B does that part really well.)

We also get some secondary plots as the h tries to figure out which of the three men might have led her sister astray and we learn that the budding politician with the Jackie O wife is an utter cheating nematode slime pustule.

The slime pustule's wife is ready to leave him when his latest penthouse popsie blackmails him and the H has to pay the woman off to protect the slime pustule's long suffering wife and daughter from being sensationalized in the tabloids.

The Jackie O wife is recovering from her fourth miscarriage in three years because the slime pustule is desperate for a son, when he already has a cute little daughter who wants to go to Timbuktu, and the slime pustule keeps berating the wife into pregnancy.

The h is an unwilling witness to all of this, as she and the H become closer and it is a real struggle for the H to get the h to trust him, he has to explain a lot of deep personal tragedies that are hidden by his insouciant facade and this honesty makes the h start to fall for him.

Eventually the H gets the h to the point of being unable to resist her Treacherous Body Syndrome and she and the H have their big passion moment. In the process of getting to the big seduction moment, we learn the legend of the moonbird.

The hotel has a very luxurious suite that is said to be haunted. It seems many, many years earlier, a very lovely, but sad lady came to stay and she locked herself in the suite for three days. When the staff heard crying coming from the room, they broke in.

They found an tiny infant on the room's gigantic bed, with a glowing white moonbird perched on the edge crooning cradle songs to soothe the baby's cries, the woman was nowhere to be found and was never seen again.

In the years since, other desperate people have seen the glowing moonbird and heard it's soothing song, this has lead them to a remarkable reversal of fortune. So it is considered to be a sign of great good fortune and luck if you should see the glowing moonbird winging across the night, crooning it's lullaby song.

After the H and h's big passion event, the h believes she is in love. She knows she has to tell the H about who she really is and later that day, she finally relates the more personal part of her story and explains about her sister.

The H is livid and tells her off, mainly because he thinks she is accusing him or one of his cousin's of murder. He storms away to have a temper moment and the h feels terribly sad over her heart's loss.

The h makes her arrangements to move on to the next hotel on her and the famous photographer's list, when the younger alcoholic brother shows up completely toasted in her room.

We all learn that it was the younger and seemingly sweeter brother that took the h's sister out that night. The h is horrified to see him crying and falling apart, she can't help but think that the night her sister died has pretty much destroyed his life too.

The drunk younger brother takes off for the beach and the h gets really worried. She calls the H and forces him to go find his cousin, then she takes off for the beach herself. The H has to swim out to rescue the brother while the h calls the rescue department for help. The younger brother almost dies and the H goes with him to hospital.

A few hours later the h is ready to go, it is still nighttime, tho it is the early morning hours before dawn and the H comes to find her. He explains that the younger brother and her sister snuck out that night to have a moonbird hunt.

The younger brother couldn't swim, tho he pretended that he could, and the h's sister was a reckless daredevil who swam far out onto an unstable sandbar. When the younger brother wouldn't join her, she stared to swim back, but the Gulf of Mexico's sandbars cause a lot of riptides and the sister got caught.

The younger brother went to get his older brother, the now skeevey cheater guy, because he was a championship swimmer. They looked for hours for the sister's body and did not find it until it was too late.

The skeevey cheater guy, who was only engaged to the Jackie O type wife at that point, said they had to hide their involvement with the h's sister, otherwise his lucrative marriage deal would be called off.

So both brother's lied and gave each other an alibi. The H was suspected, but he never cared about what people said about him and there was no evidence he had even been around that night, so the true story was hidden away.

The H now accepts that the h was correct and that his family was mostly responsible for the h's sister's death. The skeevy cheater guy is giving up his political aspirations and admitting what he did to his wife and the younger brother is in rehab for his addictions.

The H is also astounded that the h did not let the younger brother drown himself, but instead made every effort to get him rescued, tho the H says he understands if the h wants to bring the police in.

The h has no plans to go to the police, even tho the H believes she has a good case. She knows her sister was a daredevil and liked to be reckless, the h just wanted some answers and wanted to be able to resolve her own guilt for letting her sister sneak out that night.

The h's issues are finally at rest, because it appears that nobody escaped unscathed and everybody suffered from their own actions for the past ten years. The H is ready to thank the h and walk away, but the h calls him back and tells him she loves him.

The H is overwhelmed and admits that he loves her right back, but he was afraid that his initial reaction and his cousin's guilt would ruin their relationship, because really manslaughter between relatives is NOT a very solid foundation for marriage and 2.5 kids.

The h says the past is the past and while she wishes things could be different, it is up to the survivors to make the future a happy one. So the H asks her to marry him and she agrees and then the H tells her that they will travel the world and the h will take beautiful pictures until they find the most beautiful spot and build a house and have kids.

The h worries that the H will miss his Moonbird Hotel and the H explains that the h is his moonbird and since he is with her, he will never want to be anywhere else.

There is a big romantic kissing moment and as they both lift their heads, a glowing moonbird glides out of the trees, crooning an old, soft lullaby and the H and h know that they have been gifted with both great good fortune fortune and great true love for the highly excellent HEA.

K O'B's last HP outing is a seriously broody film noir romance of a book. The writing is excellent in setting the mood and the romance is well balanced with the h's investigation to find the truth. Plus both the H and the h were very nice people.

The h did not feel overtly deceptive in her quest, it was more like she was curious and questioning if her recollections were really the truth. Mostly, both these characters wanted inner peace and a place to find shelter, which they eventually do in each other.

The matching making photographer's manipulations were also very deftly done, so I wasn't getting the usual let's pimp out our main character's vibe. It was more like his inner artistic eye saw something in each of them that when put together would make the two of them complete. It wasn't stated, it was implied, but it gave the book a whole undertone of subtle tension that kept the story moving quickly.

This book is not going to be everyone's cuppa. But if you like Film Noir, if you like a little mystery in your romance and if you like that Old World Islander Agatha Christie-like suspense, this is an HP final voyage that is not to be missed and worth taking some time to experience it.

Meh. Just okay.

Despite he fact it’s a bit of a revenge plot, plus a mystery somehow this story just fell flat for me.

No stars. Despite the great setup and location this stinks. The fact that the heroine so easily desires the man who might have murdered her sister disgusts me. By halfway through the book, she hadn’t even questioned him about her sister. Hello? You are an overly eager horrible woman. You have no self respect. No pride. No self restraint. How can you make out with him?! Then have sex with him?! Then she says that she doesn’t even care about finding out who murdered her sister anymore!
I disliked every scene with the hero. He’s a bad person, a user of women. “Go before I change my mind.” Please. F off. She says no, and he doesn’t listen. More F off. He gets mad at her for lying, but he’s not upset about one of his family killing a girl! Wtf.
Literally one of the worst harlequins I’ve ever read. The trial was on my patience.

Glenna, or “Mouse”, was only 12 when her 18-year-old sister (Cindy) was drowned in a suspected manslaughter, by the branded black sheep (Mark) of the Connelly family. Ten years later, little Mouse metamorphosed into a femme fatale and returned to take revenge on the suspected killer. Her plan failed pathetically and she succumbed to Mark in bed. Fortunately, it transpired that he was not the killer. The suspected killer was his cousin (Philip), and in fact there was no killer – the bold Cindy was merely drowned in a riptide accidentally. The story ends with passionate exchanged of vows. All is well that ends well.

The novel is a nice piece of kill time.
