Located on the Exit 48 ramp of Route 495 south in Haverhill, Mas-sachusetts, the Big Dog standing over the highway has captured the hearts and imagination of the thousands of travelers who often wonder about the story behind it. This book tells the story of met-al sculptor Dale Rogers and his memories and experiences that led him to create the American Dog, New England’s most iconic sculpture. His journey begins when a young farm boy with a learning disability, Dale, is forced to ride the “short bus” to school and discovers a means to cope with his surround-ings. It chronicles his challenges as he drifts into adulthood and travels around the world, cul-minating with Dale’s dedicating himself to his passion for artistic expression and fulfilling his dream of becoming a successful metal artist. Exit 48 is a story filled with emotion, whimsy, and persistence that the Big Dog represents.
It’s a beautiful read because I think it’s extremely genuine. The title says it all: “The Art of Never Giving Up.” Dale didn’t always feel certain that art would be his path, but he was drawn to it in an irresistible way- and the incredible hard work required to make the dream a reality is tremendously inspiring. It’s the epitome of a New England story: family, hard work, and dedication made it all happen. I think it’s a must read for any aspiring artist, but more broadly, for anyone who’s hoping to have an impact- which Dale has undoubtedly had. 😊
