Riko and Reg leave Orzen and continue their descent into the Abyss. When Riko is injured by an Orb Piercer, will Reg be able to save her from its deadly poison?
Riko and Reg face emotional jeopardy as well as physical jeopardy in volume 3, leaving behind Orzen after some training, only to run into an Orb Piercer and Nanachi, a Hollow, a survivor of the Abyss. Reg goes through the wringer, first to save Riko, then to do a favor for Nanachi. If I didn't care about the little robot boy before, I surely do now.
The art continues to astound, both in its intricacy and the way it juxtaposes cute and gore. Every time I pick up a book in this series, I'm amazed by the inventiveness of the creature concepts. The shading techniques give the series a unique look.
After some missteps in volume 2, Made in Abyss rebounded in a big way. I'm officially on board for the rest of the series. Four out of five stars.

PT Uma série que, no primeiro volume, não me tinha conseguido convencer totalmente, conseguiu conquistar-me nestes dois últimos volumes.
A história é envolvente e mantém-nos agarrados ao mangá do início ao fim. Exploramos o abismo lado a lado com as personagens, sem nunca sabermos o que nos espera a seguir.
Todas as personagens são interessantes e carismáticas, cada uma com algo que nos prende a atenção.
Neste volume, somos apresentados a duas novas figuras, e o final é especialmente emotivo — daqueles que nos deixam a pensar durante algum tempo.
Estou a adorar esta leitura.

I want to see where the story goes and discover more of the world, however it has been brought up many times that the way the author treats children is concerning. I’m not talking about blood and gore and murder, but about nudity among other things. Thus being said, I will probably keep on reading the manga via my library until I reach the point I can’t stand it no more.
I’ve watched the anime so I am familiar with Mitty and Nanachi storyline, the shit still hurted me.

Don't let the cover decisive you, This manga is both beautiful and dark at the same time. The Chibi style of character designed is perfectly combination to this grimdark world. Looking forward to read more.

I can't put into words how horrific this volume was, and how sad and devastating!
I bawled my eyes out at the end.
It's one of the most unique and confusing feelings I've had reading something: horror, heartbreak and excitement for adveture, all in here with beautiful and terrible imagery. I'm so curious about how it will all come together at the end.
Beware, there is so much creepy and gory images and descriptions in this manga. It's NOT a cute story and definitely not suitable for children. Btw the author kind of creeps me out with some of his decisions regarding these children, but I'm so intrigued by the plot that I'll let those pass by.

Deep breath, welcome back everyone.
Today we are going to take some deep breaths and talk about volume three of Made in Abyss, which I picked up literally two nights ago at midnight (and thought this will be a quick happy read before bed in which we will further our adventure into the Abyss and boy was I wrong and devasted and then proceeded to stay awake for hours). My husband warned me when I started buying these books that something very unhappy happens and that I will likely be unspeakably upset at some point but I did not heed his warning and I thought I could take whatever was going to happen, (which after reading this volume he informed me was not the worst and I am still in for the pain, but I still intend to read on because I am in too far now and I need to know what is going to happen).
SPOILERS AHEAD
Reg and Riko prepare to leave Ozen and the camp in this volume and continue on their journey into the Abyss. However, shortly into their descent, they run into some trouble, first Reg feels like someone is following them and listening to them but no one is there. The pair continue cautiously on their journey and pretty soon they end up running into a creature from the Abyss. This creature has super poisonous spikes that will lead to death if Reg or Riko get punctured by them. The two must act carefully with the creature, however, this is not an easy fight and Riko ends up getting punctured in the hand by one of the creature's spikes. Just when things are looking very grim for our duo an unexpected new friend comes to the rescue and tries to help save Riko's life. This new friend knows lots about the Abyss and is able to teach Reg some very important lessons that may help them greatly in the future. However, this new friend has learned these lessons through experience. As Reg learns more about their new friend's past, we learn more about the terrifying history of some of the whistles and the Abyss.
I did not want to go too deep into the storyline which is tied to what upset me but I am going to talk about it a little bit below (kind of vaguely). I was initially super upset and worried for Riko when her hand got hit with the poison but then it seemed like things were going okay and going to be taken care of with the help of this new friend (I am not going to say if they were or not, but that was definitely a big emotional point for me). The new friend and their back story is honestly what really got me/the favor that they asked of Reg towards the end of this volume (that crushed me, like I need actual time to recover from that). I still highly recommend this series but please be emotionally prepared because this volume was a heavy hitter (in the emotions department). After a little time, I will be picking up volume four and seeing what is next for our group.

This is where the tears start. You were warned.
For fans of the anime, this is also where you'll get mostly caught up. Volume 4 is virgin territory for those who have only seen the show. Quite excited to dig into it on a future date.
Riko and Rego leave Marulk and Ozen at the Seeker Camp and descend even further into the depths. However, their adventure takes a turn for the nightmarish as they enter the Goblet of Giants...
This volume. Wow. For reference, once again for those who've watched the show, this was adapted into episodes 9 to 13 of the anime. So you know this is the shit. The heavy shit. Even more about the Curse of the Abyss is learned. The kids encounter a monster with a challenge rating that would make a Dungeon Master blush. And they also encounter the infinitely charming Nanachi and learn of their plight. It's also the volume where the closest thing to a villain this series has so far appears. And boy is he ever a fucking creeper.
This series only continues to get better and better. Just get ready to have your heart ripped out.

I'm finally getting back to this series after far too long. This volume is where the dangers of the Abyss really hit home. Riko and Reg faced some setbacks prior to this, but the other shoe has dropped, and it's clear that they are in way over their heads. To crib a line from Dark Souls (which I gather, Tsukushi took inspiration from), the true Abyss begins here. This is also where some people might find Made in Abyss to be a bit too much for them....
The best parts of this volume are great in the same way that, say, Requiem for a Dream is great: powerful, haunting, and at times very difficult to sit through. The things that happen, and the choices characters have to make are utterly devastating. I don't want to go into detail, both because of spoilers, and because it's hard to go into detail. I've come to care about Reg, Riko, and a new addition, Nanachi. They're very sympathetic characters, and none of them deserve some of the things they've been through. And I just know things are going to get even worse for them.
So then, why is this a five-star review, if so much of it is watching characters I like suffer? Because it's all told so well The art remains beautiful, even when it's depicting terrible things. I want to see Riko & Reg succeed, even when they're putting themselves through hell. I want to see the villain that's been introduced get what's coming to him. And I want to see more of this entrancing, horrifying world Tsukushi has dreamt up.
Made in Abyss isn't for everyone. But if you can stomach watching good people endure serious emotional and physical trauma, there's an incredible story being told in an equally fascinating world, here. And much like the Abyss, itself, this series has its hooks in me; I know there's more heartache in store, but it cutting ties and pulling away would hurt worse than seeing where this goes. If that sentiment makes sense to you, you're the right audience for this story.

Hay unas cosas que me gustaron más en el anime pero en otras el manga es mucho mejor. Uno de los puntos a favor es que el ritmo es excelente, en el anime había varias partes que lo sentía algo lento. Las escenas más interesantes de este número lucen mucho mejor animadas y más tristes :'(

El descenso continúa, el autor decide bajar un poco el ritmo. Si en los primeros volúmenes lograron descender hasta la cuarta capa, aquí no los vemos ir más lejos de eso. Y está bien, vamos, el abismo no tiene capas infinitas y esta serie tiene que durar al menos unos diez volúmenes.
Riko y Reg se encuentra con Nanachi, una niña mutada, bastante extraña, que parece haber sufrido la maldición del abismo de la sexta capa. Si bien la razón por la cuál una niña que no es excavadora, fue víctima de esa maldición y se encuentra viviendo en la cuarta capa, es revelada casi al final del volumen, y de cierta manera creo que el autor establece a quien podría ser el primer villano de la serie.
No sé como le hacen pero cada volumen introducen más misterios. Seguimos sabiendo nada pero no le importa al autor y nos sigue haciendo preguntas sin darnos respuestas. Es algo bueno, pero ya hay tantas preguntas sobre el abismo, el origen de Reg, la mamá de Riko, los otros silbatos blancos, la tumba en la que encontraron la cuña, etc. Yo creo que es momento de que el autor nos regale algunas respuestas.
El arte sigue siendo tan hermoso que cuando cosas perturbadoras suceden, son realmente perturbadoras. Este tomo me dejó bastante asqueado al terminarlo. Cuando te cuentan la historia de Nanachi y Mitty, el arte muestra imágenes tan gore y desgarradoras que ilustradas de la manera "cute" que el maestro Tsukushi utiliza, es perturbador y hasta asqueante.
Definitivamente esta serie es una de las mejores que se publican actualmente, lo misterioso y rápido de la trama me recuerda a Death Note en sus mejores momentos. Muy recomendada.

It gets dark super quick in this volume. This is not for the light hearted. You will be upset and disturbed. It’s such a weird feeling reading this manga because the art style is cute while the story is gruesome. I’m about to watch episodes 3 & 4 of the anime, let’s see if my heart can re live this again.

But once we thought Riko was in the clear we see the new friend’s backstory and did not let our hearts rest because it was so disturbing and depressing. And in the end the new friend asks Reg for a favor. I feel so sad for Reg for everything he had to do and see. I will go out to get volume 4 in the end of the month to see what else is in store for our trio.

I've joked in the past about various manga and anime series I follow abusing its characters. There are a lot of characters I've seen with a lot of emotional baggage and tragic backstories from childhood.
Made in Abyss is very different than those series. Other series imply the abuse characters go through or if they show it, they avert the viewer's gaze at the worst moments. This one is pretty graphic with the abuses suffered by our child characters. It's brutal and gory and pulls no punches.
And frankly, it's too much for me.
The wonders of the Abyss aren't enough to keep me coming back.

Si bien en el segundo tomo se hace evidente que a los protagonistas les esta saliendo muy bien su travesia aca hay un punto de quiebre, dejando en claro que ni las grandes habilidades de Reg son infalibles ni el conocimiento de Riko es suficiente... los protagonistas chocan con pared al enfrentarse con un enemigo que sobrepasa sus expectativas y nos muestra con crudeza los efectos de la maldicion. Por fin aparecen los Narehates mencionados en el primer tomo... la historia de Mitty es bastante desgarradora, el autor no se contiene para mostrarnos que la falta de preparacion de los personajes y subestimar al abismo los puede llevar a la muerte...

J'ai beaucoup aimé le premier tome, que j'ai trouvé prometteur. J'ai trouvé l’univers hyper intéressant et innovant et c’est ce qui m’a plu au premier abord. Mais j’ai décidé de ne pas continuer la saga puisque les personnages – qui sont censés être des enfants – sont sexualisés. A chaque tome, on a une scène de nudité. Je trouve ça inapproprié et en tant que femme, ça me met très mal à l’aise et je trouve ça dégradant. Au départ, je me suis dit que c’était juste moi mais non, je ne suis pas la seule à avoir remarqué ça. C’est dommage parce ça gâche tout alors que l’histoire et l’univers étaient très bien pensés. Je ne recommande pas.

Este tomo continúa siendo misterioso, con la adición de que hay varias escenas de acción que están muy buenas, con buen ritmo y excelentes dibujos (aunque en algunos pocos momentos en los que no se entiende bien que pasa).
La historia de Nanachi y Mitty me rompió el corazón, y es una muy buena introducción para uno de los silbatos blancos, muy muy de a poquito se va expandiendo el mundo del abismo y los exploradores, y aunque en estos capítulos Reg y Riko no avanzaron casi nada, la pausa sirve para desarrollar más algunos aspectos de Reg y su pasado.
La historia de Nanachi y Mitty me rompió el corazón, y es una muy buena introducción para uno de los silbatos blancos, muy muy de a poquito se va expandiendo el mundo del abismo y los exploradores, y aunque en estos capítulos Reg y Riko no avanzaron casi nada, la pausa sirve para desarrollar más algunos aspectos de Reg y su pasado.

Okay, that final scene with Mitty, Nanachi, and Reg was so damn painful it hit me way harder in the feels than I was expecting.
That being said, this is such a FUCKING DEPRESSING series. And not one of those, "oh it's got sad points but there's a lot of hope to balance it out!" Nope, it's just death and grief and sorrow and murder through and through. Also, not digging the "human experimentation" shit that's been introduced, isn't this series dark enough without that shit?
I'm gonna keep pushing forward, but I doubt I'm gonna finish this series. It's just too damn dark and depressing.
That being said, this is such a FUCKING DEPRESSING series. And not one of those, "oh it's got sad points but there's a lot of hope to balance it out!" Nope, it's just death and grief and sorrow and murder through and through. Also, not digging the "human experimentation" shit that's been introduced, isn't this series dark enough without that shit?
