Hello ... I'm a self-confessed time-travel fan. So, unsurprisingly, my books fit into the time-travel genre. My third book, Eye of Time, will be published in October 2021. Please drop onto my website for updates.
I've been following "Jason Apsley" for a while now and enjoyed this 4th book immensely, even though Mr Adrian Cousins confused the heck out of me with writing about mixed up brothers and sisters and cousins and girlfriends and granddads and grandmas which brought back to mind that old song "Shame and scandal in the Family" So yes, this story might find you a trifle bewildered at times but trust me, you won't be dissatisfied. Reading "Force of Time" the third book then straight onto "Calling Time" might ease a bit of confusion but all in all well worth 5 stars.
Mr Cousins knows how to merge time travel and a decent storyline
I've enjoyed every one of Mr Cousins books and if you like well written, time travel stories, then these are for you.
I have to be honest and admit to not being able to follow the family tree entirely, despite it being explained a few times throughout the book. But I have no doubt that wasn't the clarity of the author and more my lack of understanding. Unless of course Mr Cousins at some point in the future says it didn't add up, in which case, well played.
No matter, the storyline holds together really well and even finishes on another link to a future book, which I am very much looking forward to reading. All the characters are here and you can see why Beth plays a large role, being the lead up to the next book. The Colneys and the Ford Cortina just won't go away.
I really hate leaving reviews but occasionally I feel I owe the author something for the hours of enjoyment that they have provided. Adrian Cousins is one of the handful who qualifies. All emotions are captured but best read in sequence as time travel is confusing enough anyway. His other books are excellent also. More power to his elbow as my old dad would say
I loved the other three books prior to this one. Calling Time was too stop start and I found myself constantly skipping ahead. The author spent too much time explaining what was going on rather than letting it happen. I suppose the story series has just run out of steam. It either needs a reboot or maybe just stop their Mr Cousins and do something fresh. Call Time on it right enough.
A repetitive hot mess of a book! The first half was an incoherent jumble retelling the story from previous books.
The author continually repeated phrases and retold the background story all the bloody time, it was infuriating that he didn’t trust the audience to be intelligent enough to remember the plot.
Plus his disdain for everyone that lived on a council estate was grating, especially as his “adopted Dad” Don was from there! All the references to history seemed really hamfisted and crowbarred in for effect too, unlike previous where it was charmingly nostalgic.
It’s a shame as I love time travel themes and I’ve enjoyed his previous books, but this series has definitely run out of steam.
The main problem with this book is that the story is still the same as in the previous books, and has now gone on too long. No new major characters, and still the plot of the Conleys looking to disrupt the lives of the Apsleys. Beth and Martin are incredibly irritating, and the dialogue grates. I liked the first three books, but wish I hadn’t bothered with the fourth. Can’t imagine how the story will be sustained in the fifth and sixth books, but finding out would be too tedious. Calling time.
I’ve read all Adrian’s books and always look forward to the next release. I would suggest starting at the beginning with Jason’s story. Not only are they great reads, nostalgic and at times very funny, but understanding the characters is essential. Great work Adrain
An interesting next stage of Jason’s haphazard life. Great to see the story pan out, although occasionally needed a quick time check to see when and who you were reading about! Another great read with heroes to root for, villains to hate and characters to eye roll and laugh with.
Once again the yellow Ford Cortina plays it's part even better than before and this story is the Brokworth thing all over murder and mayhem and complications that would tax Holmes and Watson brain as for Fairfield's finest boys in blue they got no chance so read it and open mind and remember the truth is out there
so I picked up this series from a Facebook ad, a very interesting premise I thought. I became addicted really quickly, and read all 4 books almost in one sitting. clever, great characters, brain-twisting, self-deprecating, funny, sad, shocking, excellent reading! thank you Mr Cousins for inviting me into the world of Jason Apsley!
I knew it would be complicated working through all the relationships and time lines but the reminders of who is who at the beginning really helped. It is an ok read but the asides and distractions annoyed me this time rather than amusing me.
Love the Jason apsley series. Looking forward to seeing how things develop further. I’ve enjoyed all of Adrian’s books to date and cannot wait for his next book.
Having thoroughly enjoyed all the others in this series, including the novella, this was a bit of a letdown by comparison. Maybe I should have reread the earlier books first to refresh my memory, as my interest seriously waned at times here. Not saying it was poor, just a challenging read with all the timelines involved. No more from this series apparently which was originally a trilogy. Perhaps it should have remained a trilogy?
