Liked this variation of the Shrew better than Garrick’s. This version highlights the darkness, ugliness, and the tragic elements, of the original play.
Rather than forcing it into the comedy genre, it pushes towards tragedy, highlighting the toxic elements of all the characters. In this way, Katherine is tougher, meaner, and better-suited for Petruchio. He is still horribly abusive, and she of course does not deserve the treatment she receives, but at least these events are not taken lightly as comedy.
