Victory by Mayra Barry is a journey inside a book! I have recently gotten into Christian fiction, and this book opened my eyes to possibilities within this genre. Told through the eyes of Joe Smith, a tradesman and sailor born in the 17th century. He was deeply loved by his father, but his brothers were jealous of him, and one of them tricked him and sold him to pirates. It starts off as a “Joseph” kind of situation where you right away root for Joe, like when Joseph was sold by slaves by his brothers and loved by his father. And like Joseph, Joe learns to lean on God and not his own abilities and discovers the power of true forgiveness. Joe rises to the occasion and goes from a servant and butler to the captain of a ship, thanks to the help of beautiful Victoria and her father, Alexander. Even though I can’t relate to living during this time period, I find this story relatable. It truly echoes how work, faith, and romance will take you very far in life. If you like romance books, pirates, and faith is important to you, I highly recommend this book. And Mayra paints a good picture with her writing style.
Joe is a hard working and kind soul. Always works hard, loves his family and people pleaser. He practically raised on a ship which is basically the engine of the ship he is part of. His brother did him wrong but he never lost his faith and worked through. I admire that no matter how hard things become for him, he pushed through and he let God lead him. I like that Victoria loved Joe who he was before knowing his skills on a ship or his identity. She was a big help and support. Alexander is a great person, helps Joe out, listens to him, and treats him equally. He knew Joe's feelings towards Victoria and supported it. He was a great matchmaker and good friend to Joe. Also a good husband and father. I love the story itself . The message to the story to me was no matter what happens to you. Have faith, stay strong, God is here to hear your cries, and everything will work out.

A great combination of romance and adventure, this book will keep you glued to the pages. Joe and Victoria are very likeable characters. This is my first Christian romance novel and after reading it, it will not be my last. The story captures the heart and makes you want to jump into the next book which I look forward to. I found myself thrown into the Joe's character and the storyline. I must congratulate the author for her ability to write such a spectacular story.
This wonderful romantic novel had me on the edge of my seat with descriptive adventures in tropical places and ships with the billowing sails. Mayra Barry painted a delightful detailed picture of her characters and their historic settings. I felt transported to another world and I could clearly see this story unfolding before my eyes. This Christian romance was well worth the read and I will be anxiously anticipating the next book in this series.
I love a good Joseph retelling!! This one had a lot of great components and a lot of great characters. However, a lot of the writing was tell and not show. I was told redundantly how are character was feeling and thinking, it was never shown in action, only in word. Good clean Christian romance!
Profanity?: none
Violence: some fights, nothing graphic
Romance: very clean, one character is on the looser side, but picture Hallmark loose. 2 none detailed kisses.
very well written Christian romance, that has some parallels with character Joseph in the bible minus the romance. Mayra does an awesome job of keeping me on the edge of my seat, presenting characters that are three dimensional that I can cheer for and despise. Highly recommend for adventure, suspense, and yes romantic thrillers.
3.5 I was intrigued that this story was inspired by the story of Joseph. Overall I really liked it, although at times it was slower paced than what I expected or typically read. I really liked the characters, well written and kept me in the story throughout.
I won a copy from the author in a Goodreads Giveaway
Set in the swashbuckling history of sailing vessels, this sweet Christian romance is peppered with intrigue and adventure. For a debut novel, the author shows much promise and I look forward to reading her next book!
