‘You wouldn’t be my first choice,’ Churchill told him – and right now Penn McGavell doubts he’d even be his last. It’s 1914, the eve of the war to end all wars and McGavell has just botched a crucial espionage assignment. Relegated to the far-flung outpost of Zanzibar, this unlikely hero goes to war. A war of redemption catapulting him from East Africa into the midst of the Arabian Revolution. The treacherous terrain and ruthless adversaries are deadly enough, but close on his heels are two women with vastly different designs on his fate. Will he succeed or succumb? And will the brutal conflict in the ancient gebels of Arabia finally force him to confront his greatest demon of all? If you enjoy the thrilling historical fiction of Wilbur Smith, Clive Cussler or Tony Maxwell, you’ll love this compelling tale set during the First World War

🔥 Historical Fiction at Its Finest – A Must-Read for Adventure Lovers!
Those Who Favour Fire by Colin Grieve is a gripping, atmospheric plunge into the shadows of WWI espionage, redemption, and raw human endurance. With a flawed hero, two dangerously intriguing women, and a backdrop of war-torn Arabia and East Africa, this book delivers everything fans of Wilbur Smith and Clive Cussler crave—danger, depth, and dazzling historical detail. Highly recommended for readers who love their fiction bold, intelligent, and unpredictable.

A well-paced, well-written and extensively researched historical fiction book that provides an interesting perspective of WW1 - especially in Africa and Arabia. This is not something you come across very often, as much of WW1 fiction is often focused around Europe.

I thoroughly enjoyed the various characters and their individual journeys throughout the novel. Each got an ending which was fitting to their unique straits.

Excited to read the next novel in the McGavells series!
