Trusting Change: Finding Our Way Through Personal and Global Transformation

Rate this book
Minister and award-winning author of Writing to Wake the Soul Karen Hering invites readers on the cusp of great change—which is all of us today—to explore the new possibilities emerging in our times.

Whether you are living through significant personal transitions or navigating a world reshaping itself faster than ever, the book offers ten skills for living on the threshold as well as spiritual practices and inspiration for connecting with your own inner wisdom. From the first page, you’ll find a storytelling companion ready to journey with you through uncertainty and change. Hering does not pretend that change is simple. But she offers reassurance that it becomes easier to trust the more we participate in it.

Sharing wisdom found in the body, in nature, and in metaphors, these reflections include creative and embodied exercises that invite readers into a larger story of change. With suggestions for using the book alone and with others, Hering reminds us that trusting change is made possible by sharing its challenges and its possibilities with others. This book is a conversation with the reader meant to also stir conversations between readers as we learn to live into and through our transformative times together.

The transformation of a Monarch caterpillar into chrysalis into a gorgeous adult butterfly is nothing short of miraculous and is a befitting metaphor for
the transformation that organizations, communities, countries, and individuals go through before, during, and after significant change. Change is often uncomfortable at the least and deeply painful at the most, but no matter where you are on the threshold of change, Karen invites you to listen for the echo change brings and embrace the change. Trusting Change will help you find your way with the expansive wisdom and knowledge of Rev. Karen Hering, who has been facilitating threshold groups around the country for many years.

This deeply thoughtful and well-researched book is divided into three main sections, “No Longer,” “The Pause,” and “Not Yet.” Ten skills are divided among the sections; each one includes reflections on components of the skill with meaningful personal experiences and lessons, as well as insight from poets, writers, ministers, philosophers, naturalists, and activists. Each reflection is followed by a highlighted box called “Chrysalis Space” and here is where you’ll find even more potential for personal growth.

Chrysalis Space encourages you to take time, relax and let go, and to consider
a wide range of questions, with specific ideas on how to explore them, and suggestions for how to pay attention, notice, and think about your experience. Within this space, there are writing prompts, cues to notice your body, and recommendations to remember, practice, move, navigate, use natural materials, create touchstones, open doors, and to let yourself feel.

Even though much of the work of finding your way through transformation
is individual and personal, the book includes suggestions for buddy or group discussion. As Karen reminds us, “The important thing is to remember that we are not meant to move through change alone.... The transformative possibilities of our current thresholds will depend on our ability to share the uncertainty and chaos of these times with another.” Trusting Change is right on time for us all.

I thoroughly enjoyed Karen Hering's book Trusting Change. Her rich storytelling leads us forward and through changes around us and within as we reflect on how we go about the sometimes harrowing process of transforming from who we were to who we will be. The book invites us on a journey of introspection that is both gentle and courageous, engaging and skillful.

Perhaps what I loved the most were the little windows into our natural world and human lives that she packed into every corner and fold of the book. Karen Hering makes us look again at things we thought we knew, that looked simple on the surface, and shows us their astonishing intricacy up close. This is a beautiful book and a great read!

I enjoyed the book, however I listened to it on audible. Do not purchase the audible. There are numerous exercises referred to and no reference on the audible as work where an audible listener can download and follow along.
