February 19, 2024Este cómic cuenta una historia tremendamente tierna de un chico con diversidad funcional que, por una tragedia familiar, tiene que empezar de cero en un nuevo contexto que le es ajeno. Me ha parecido interesante y el dibujo es muy efectivo, pero me hubiese gustado que diese más contexto y explicase mejor las cosas.

Uno dei fumetti più belli letti dall'inizio dell'anno. Il graphic novel è stato realizzato per i 150 anni di una struttura inclusiva e mostra verosimilmente la quotidianità di persone molto diverse, spesso con disabilità mentali. È un racconto dolce e divertente che punta molto sulla "diversità" dei suoi personaggi sottolineando quanto sia importante prendersi cura di ognuno in modo diverso, lasciando loro la libertà di esprimersi e cercare la propria felicità.

I love this. The art, which I think is done in soft pastels, is distinctive and colourful, and Ross does incredible work with lighting and reflection.
The story is funny, sweet and sensitive. It really moved me.

Úraz je tretí grafický román, ktorý nám prinieslo vydavateľstvo Absynt a opäť si vybrali výborný kúsok.
Máme tu dedinku, v ktorej žijú ľudia s postihnutím a chlapca, ktorý prišiel o mamu. Tá dedinka je skutočná, nachádza sa v Nemecku a tento román vyšiel k nej 150. výročiu.
Príbeh je pekný, emotívny, máme tu viac príbehov, ktoré vám majú čo odovzdať. Je to veľmi pekné.
A to aj graficky je to prenádherné. Štýl kresby mi veľmi sadol (nie ako Sabrina), je to úžasný, veľký hardcover, čo bol pre mňa príjemným prekvapením.
Nemôžem síce povedať, že si ma získal ako Vo vlnách, alebo ma tak veľmi emotívne zasiahol, no aj tak odporúčam tento grafický román každému, lebo každému má čo dať. Je to krásny príbeh o ľudskosti.

Симпатичний мальопис про життя інклюзивного села Ноєркероде в Німеччині. Тут йдеться про хлопчика Ноеля, з порушеннями інтелектуального розвитку, котрий після нещасного випадку з його мамою потрапляє у це село.
Насправді, я здивована, що десь у світі є такий чудовий проєкт, з столітньою історією. І гадаю, що ми могли б, якщо не перейняти, то бодай зацікавитись такою ініціативою.
Рекомендую до читання.

Jest taki typ komiksu, którego szczerze nie cierpię. Komiks powstały na zlecenie jakiejś organizacji pozarządowej, mający prezentować ich dobre praktyki. Albo jeszcze inaczej - jest sobie jakaś organizacja pomagająca dzieciom, starszym osobom, matkom w problemie bezdomności i zaprasza komiksiarza, żeby odmalował ich losy, dzieje, grantozę. Oczywiście za pieniądze z grantu. Doliczam to tego wszystkie miasta, które uważają, że muszą trafić z promocją do młodzieży i wydają jakieś badziewia komiksowe (ostatnio mniej, bo chyba Unia też zobaczyła, że to wyrzucanie pieniędzy w błoto). Komiks Mikaela Rossa jest zaprzeczeniem wszystkich moich obaw i naprawdę warto go czytać niezależnie od wieku, by dowiedzieć się po pierwsze jak wygląda codzienność osób neuronietypowych, a po drugie - jak z nimi współpracować.
Ross w opowieści o działaniach Fundacji Ewangelicznej Neuerkerode ujął mnie sprawnym przechodzeniem ze atrakcyjnego dla komiksiarza świata fantazji i przygód (nie zawsze realnych) głównych swoich bohaterów, do brutalnej rzeczywistości. Nie ma tu przysładzania osobom neuronietypowym, całej tej gadki o wyjątkowych dzieciach, które widzą i wiedzą więcej, a jest historia dzieciaków, które po prostu bywają nieznośne (jak wszystkie dzieci), ale i kochane (chyba jak wszystkie dzieci), które doprowadzają osoby pracujące do rozpaczy (a czasem do cięższych ran), ale potrafią też być dzielne, pomysłowe i chcące żyć własnym życiem, bez zwracania uwagi na społeczne ramy i konwenanse.
Gdy matka Noela doznaje udaru i zapada w “śpionczke” nikt początkowo nie zdaje sobie sprawy z tego, że Noelowi nie da się tak łatwo wyjaśnić tego, co się stało. Na szczęście i w szpitalu są dobrzy ludzie, którzy wiedzą, że Noelowi świat trzeba opowiadać inaczej. I tak staje się księciem wiezionym przez pana z wąsem do nowego zamku, gdzie czekają na niego nowi koledzy i koleżanki.
Chwytające za serce są momenty, w których narrator przypomina nam, że Noel jest już całkiem dorosłym facetem, który wciąż ma bilety na koncert ukochanego zespołu i na przekór wszystkim postanawia się na nim pojawić. Ross pokazuje nie tylko zabawne historyjki, czy takie właśnie łzorodne - spora część komiksu to historia tego jak wiele pracy jest przy osobach neuronietypowych, bo zapewnienie im godnego życia, które będzie z jednej strony bezpieczne dla nich, a z drugiej nie zamknie ich w twierdzy wymaga niezwykłego wysiłku. Ale nic tu nie jest opowiedziane z przesadną emfazą, nikt się nad sobą nie użala, a czytelnik kończy lekturę mądrzejszy ale i skonfudowany, bo jednak wciąż jesteśmy przyzwyczajeni do dominujących narracji opowieści o osobach neuronietypowych - grających na emocjach i szantażujących nas z pozycji etycznych.
Mam tylko uwagę do redaktorów tego komiksu, że określenie “upośledzony umysłowo” powinni wykreślać w każdym egzemplarzu tego komiksu i się podpisywać obok. To sformułowanie jest wartościujące i stygmatyzujące, a cały komiks właśnie był o tym jak tego nie robić. Bardzo - niestety - zła robota i nie uspokaja mnie ten aniołek siadający teraz na moim lewym ramieniu i podszeptujący: “Szot, każdemu się zdarza”. No, nie, jednak jest już taki moment, że warto myśleć o języku, którym się posługujemy, zwłaszcza powinno być to oczywiste dla tych, co ze słowem pracują.
Rysunkowo Ross bardzo przypomina Judith Vanistendael, której komiks “Kiedy David stracił głos” (przekład Sławomir Paszkiet) miałem przyjemność wydawać. Gra zwłaszcza kontrastami i nierównością w traktowaniu szczegółów. Bardzo to wszystko jest czytelne i pozbawione eksperymentów, co akurat szczęśliwie sprawdza się w tego typu historiach.
“Upadek” Mikaela Rossa w tłumaczeniu Mateusza Jankowskiego zdecydowanie warto znać, choć warto też w każdym egzemplarzu nanieść ręcznie pewne poprawki, także w bibliotecznych.

The Toronto Public Library has contacted me again to review a book for its IBBY collection. This time I was assigned a graphic novel in German, Der Umfall by Mikael Ross. Unlike past occasions when I received their book deliveries, the present circumstances with COVID-19 preclude any shipment of books from Europe. Thus the book I received was in PDF format. For me, this was a novelty, since I had never read anything other than physical books with printed pages on paper.
The focus of the IBBY collection is books for and about young people with disabilities. Der Umfall centres on a young teen named Noel Stock from Berlin who is faced with the sudden shock of discovering his mother collapsed in the bathroom. We are not told of any specific disability Noel might have, but in his interactions with his mother at the beginning of the book he knows it is his birthday but he is not aware of how old he is. He is an adolescent but his words and actions are more typical of a young child. He deals with store associates, bus drivers and train ticket inspectors and his level of understanding seems years behind his actual age. In his phone call with emergency personnel to report his mother, Noel cannot recall what street he lives on nor his house number, but the shock to his system of discovering his mother unconscious would disorient anyone.
He is a protagonist of a heavy body size who is consoled by a nurse who is similar. Later on in the book Noel's weight is often the butt of jokes. He is called Pummelino (grapefruit), a derivation of pummelig, which means chubby. Throughout its 124 pages Der Umfall strives for inclusivity and diversity. A cast of characters passes through the book in fleeting moments or in supporting roles. While his mother is incapacitated--and we are never really sure if she lives or dies but upon subsequent rereads I believe the latter--Noel is taken to Neuerkerode, which refers to the real-life institute that during the Third Reich housed those with mental illnesses who were later put to death. Alice is a friend of Noel's who is living with epilepsy. We meet an older lesbian couple and an all-women heavy metal band. A male wheelchair person living at Neuerkerode lends him a porno DVD, showing that people with disabilities are indeed sexual persons. Noel meets a man in his judo class who used to inflict self-harm through cutting. Judo saved him from this destructive behaviour. The Neuerkerode resident who befriends Noel is Valentin, an obsessive-compulsive preoccupied with time, dates and schedules. A recurring character is Irma, a wizened old woman who during the Third Reich used to live at Neuerkerode with her brother Erwin. Sadly, Erwin perished when he was taken away in a bus never to be heard from again.
The drawings do not abound with a variety of colours. Ross might choose one colour to dominate several pages of images with emphasis on ranges within the blue and yellow/orange spectrum. Ross inserted tiny comical speech bubbles for a little dog to convey panting and barking, which I found adorable and enhanced the action on the page.
There is a play on words in the title. Look at the M in italics. The word Umfall can mean two things: an accident, similar to Unfall (which is the more common word for accident) and it can also mean the act of collapsing, from the verb umfallen. Noel's mother suffered an Umfall due to a stroke.

In einem Berliner Einkaufszentrum (wo es Grillkohle und Prinzessinnenkleider gibt) kommt es zu einem lauten Auftritt mit einer kleinen rundlichen Person in Daunenjacke. Ein Mann, ein Kind, eine behinderte Person vielleicht? Die Mutter ist jedenfalls sauer über die Daunenkugel, die vor allen Leuten laut und eigenwillig singt. Kurz darauf muss Noel Stock die Notrufnummer wählen, weil seine Mutter mit einem Schlaganfall zusammengebrochen ist. Seine Adresse bekommt er am Telefon nur schwer zusammen – und man ahnt, dass die Geschichte von Mutter und Sohn ein trauriges Ende nehmen könnte.
Nach einem Schnitt treffen wir Noel in der Behinderteneinrichtung Neuerkerode wieder. Sein Erzieher dort weiß sehr gut, wie erschreckend all die neuen Eindrücke für einen geistig Behinderten sein können und dass man sich manches Mal einfach unter dem Tisch verstecken muss. Noel lernt, dass andere Bewohner seiner neuen Heimat sehr speziell sein und andere seine Hilfe gebrauchen können. Er erlebt Epilepsie, Menschen, die keinen Lärm vertragen, und dass es diese unordentlich Sache namens Sex gibt. Da Noel sich zu oft prügelt, spricht sein Vormund ein ernstes Wort mit ihm und sucht einen Weg, wie Noel sich mit sanften Methoden zur Wehr setzen kann.
Irma, eine kleine ältere Frau, erzählt ihm von den Diakonissen, die hier früher arbeiteten und von dem Zaun, der Männer und Frauen der Einrichtung voneinander trennte. In einer anderen Zeit lebte ihr Bruder auf der anderen Seite und erzählte ihr durch den Zaun hindurch von Transporten, die Bewohner wegbrachten. Deshalb steigt Irma bis heute in keinen Bus mehr ein.
Der Umfall ist eine Auftragsarbeit zum 150. Jubiläum der Stiftung Neuerkerode und in vielerlei Hinsicht ein wunderbares Buch. Es zeigt das Schicksal eines jungen Behinderten, der von einem Tag auf den anderen in einer großen Behinderteneinrichtung leben muss, richtet den Blick vom Einzelschicksal auf die Vielfältigkeit in Neuerkerode – und schließlich ist es einfach liebevoll gezeichnet und voller Humor.

Een mooi boek over een jongen met beperkte intelligentie die nadat zijn moeder een beroerte heeft gekregen naar een begeleid-wonen huis moet. Daar zien we hem vrienden maken, verliefd worden, zijn draai vinden (al gaat dat heel moeilijk want hij wil gewoon naar huis en dat mag hij maar niet). Ik vond het erg mooi geschreven en ook goed getekend. Ik had alleen zoveel medelijden met Noel. Zijn leven is al niet altijd makkelijk, en dan gebeuren er dingen zoals die in het boek.
Alleen het einde dat hij dus naar Berlijn gaat verwarde me.
Oh en dat ene meisje (ben nu al haar naam kwijt want ik wilde haar niet in mijn hoofd) was strontvervelend. Het spijt me. Ik kan veel hebben, maar zij ging er gewoon té overheen.
Maar een mooi boek af en toe moest ik even huilen, aanrader. Leuk ook dat we extra info over het dorp krijgen.
Alleen het einde dat hij dus naar Berlijn gaat verwarde me.

"Kto si? Mám chuť spoznať ťa." Pre bežných ľudí formulka pomerne čudesná, možno dokonca otravná, pre iných, pohybujúcich sa v mikrokozme prazvláštnej dediny plnej všakovakých hendikepov, zase príťažlivo čarovná. Kĺbi v sebe prijatie i radosť, zvedavosť i tak potrebnú štipku tolerancie...
...Voči vyhroteným situáciám a rozbúreným emóciám, voči najrozličnejším individuám a nepredvídateľným podivnostiam. Psychózy a syndrómy, poruchy i poškodenia.
A uprostred nich Noel. Zmätený a opustený, no predsa nie úplne sám. V obklopení "svojich" si zvyká na nové miesto i ľudí, na náhlu absenciu milovanej mamy vo svojom živote. Učí sa o láske i priateľstve, o pochopení a akceptácii. O pádoch i víťazstvách.
Noelov príbeh je tak trochu príbehom ich všetkých. Tých iných, "divných", v bežnom svete nepochopených. Prevádza nás nezvyčajnou stratou (do istej miery bolestnou, no zároveň nie tak úplne pochopenou) i náhlou potrebou vyrovnať sa s novým prostredím, poukazuje na odlišné postihnutia i rozdielny spôsob správania, ktorý z nich vyplýva, no najmä zdôrazňuje, že byť iný, nutne neznamená byť neschopný či nedostatočný.
Grafický román Úraz ponúka autentický náhľad do nevšednej, no predsa len potrebnej komunity. Do komunity, ktorá sa nebojí inakosti a nesúdi na základe nedostatkov, do komunity, ktorá umožňuje byť nedokonalým, no predsa svojsky užitočným.
Bezpečný prístav. Útočisko. Neuerkerode.

A uprostred nich Noel. Zmätený a opustený, no predsa nie úplne sám. V obklopení "svojich" si zvyká na nové miesto i ľudí, na náhlu absenciu milovanej mamy vo svojom živote. Učí sa o láske i priateľstve, o pochopení a akceptácii. O pádoch i víťazstvách.
Noelov príbeh je tak trochu príbehom ich všetkých. Tých iných, "divných", v bežnom svete nepochopených. Prevádza nás nezvyčajnou stratou (do istej miery bolestnou, no zároveň nie tak úplne pochopenou) i náhlou potrebou vyrovnať sa s novým prostredím, poukazuje na odlišné postihnutia i rozdielny spôsob správania, ktorý z nich vyplýva, no najmä zdôrazňuje, že byť iný, nutne neznamená byť neschopný či nedostatočný.
Grafický román Úraz ponúka autentický náhľad do nevšednej, no predsa len potrebnej komunity. Do komunity, ktorá sa nebojí inakosti a nesúdi na základe nedostatkov, do komunity, ktorá umožňuje byť nedokonalým, no predsa svojsky užitočným.

Aprendendo a cair é, no mínimo, um quadrinho diferente da maioria daqueles que a gente costuma ler, com pessoas também diferentes das que costumamos ver retratadas em quadrinhos e na midia em geral. É um quadrinho muito cativante com um protagonista que possui Síndrome de Down e acaba perdendo a mãe num acidente. Esse incidente incitante acaba levando Noel para a Neuerkerode, uma vila alemã quase inteiramente gerida por pessoas com algum tipo de deficiência mental. Um lugar que realmente existe e que encomendou esse trabalho para o quadrinista alemão Mikaël Ross, que traz um retrato incrível com novas nuances a serem exploradas sobre as interações entre as especiais pessoas que Neuerkerode abriga. Temos um arco de evolução das relações sociais de Noel e de seus amigos, acolhidos pela vila. A história em quadrinhos nos envolve em sua peciliaridade e na forma branda e divertida com que aborda temas tão sensiveis como a deficiência mental e a diferença na forma de enxergar e conviver no mundo por esse tipo de pessoas. Um quadrinho que mereceria ser lido por todas as pessoas. Sensacional!

Celkom príjemná záležitosť ukazujúca život v komunite ľudí s mentálnym postihnutím s ľuďmi bez neho. Hlavne je to krásne a milé. Plus to členenie na jednotlivé kratučké príbehy bola skvelá volba, kresba je skvelá a komické prvky sú vhodné, nie zosmiešňujúce.

I started reading graphic novels only in the last few years. However, I have found that they are more enlightening and enjoyable than I ever thought possible. The summary of “The Thud” was extremely intriguing especially knowing that there is an actual village in Germany that is operated by people with mental disabilities.
The story begins with Noel, the main character, celebrating his birthday with his mother in Berlin. Noel has a mental disability therefore his mother has remained his guardian into adulthood. For his birthday she surprised him with the ultimate gift, two tickets to a concert with his favorite band. Unfortunately they never get the chance to attend. Before the night ends, tragedy strikes, Noel suddenly finds himself alone. He is assigned a guardian who takes him to the village of Neuerkerode, a town occupied and operated by people with mental disabilities. Now Noel has to learn how to navigate his new world and live on his own. Neither of which he was ready to do.
I wasn’t a big fan of the book as I had initially hoped. First, I didn’t enjoy the art. Majority of the characters never looked happy and moreover they seemed to look sad or angry throughout the book. Secondly, I expected there to be more detail on a village such as this and how it is specifically run. As well as the benefits and possible drawbacks it has had on its citizens. Don’t get me wrong I do understand that the story itself is based around fictional characters but the author had spent so much time living in and researching the area I thought it would’ve been brought to life more in the story. Lastly, I had wanted it to be more educational so I could put it in the hands of my young adults. Unfortunately, I don’t feel like this book gives off the positive impression I wanted for my readers. Possible recommendation.

A book trying its best to balance the depiction of individuals with developmental disabilities without being exploitative, it is somewhat successful in that but there are still some moments that don't quite work. A story about a young disabled man who is separated from his mother due to her falling ill and forced to join the community at Neuerkerode which can provide support while allowing a level of independence that may not have been possible on his own. Very sad at times which is seems like despite the best intentions, no one informs our protagonist of the details of his condition and the true status of his mother leading to some challenging moments. A very mixed read.

2.5* the art style wasn't my fave, the episodic storytelling isn't my jam, and I wish there had been more front/back matter about the town, people with disabilities, etc.
It's so rare to see people with disabilities portrayed as main characters. And the town's mission is so lovely - an inclusive community that give people with disabilities the opportunity to integrate into society and people without disabilities the chance to live and work alongside them.
Yet, I felt that the characters were just that, characters; sketches, not actors in their own lives. Maybe I'm naive, but I think that consent is important even for someone with diminished mental facilities and keeping someone informed is the most caring act...perhaps it happens behind the scenes but in this GN we didn't see the carers genuinely trying to explain situations.
Anywhoooo, this is probably the kind of book you can appreciate best if you really know what you're getting into, but I just stumbled onto it in my library...

3.5 ⭐️ A strange little story. Not at all what I was expecting for some reason, but I actually learned something from it. The setting, Neuerkerode, is a real village for disabled individuals. Our protagonist, Noel, has to adjust to life there once his mother has a stroke. This details some of the events he goes through during that process.

To taka pozycja, której trudno nie lubić. Noel nie jest samodzielny i po śmierci matki ląduje w ośrodku, gdzie musi radzić sobie z rzeczywistością, a postrzega ją nieco inaczej niż przeciętny człowiek. Miałem wątpliwości czy to dobra forma, czy jednak nie jest to zbyt "fajne", czy nie jest to kolejna ciepła opowieść, która bawi i dodaje otuchy czytelnikowi, a niekoniecznie oddaje problemy, jakim stawia czoło właśnie taki bohater. Powtórzyłem lekturę i wątpliwości już nie mam. Pod dawką humoru kryje się jednak sporo goryczy, co nadaje całości głębszego wymiaru. Podoba mi się, gdy Ross pomysłowo wraca do wątków, które wydawały się mocno epizodyczne (martwy ptak, baletnica, bilety na koncert) - widać, że jest to historia przemyślana w każdym detalu. Dobra rzecz - do postawienia na półce obok "Przygód Stasia i Złej Nogi"

Herzerwärmend und lustig schafft es dieses herausragende Buch trotzdem auch die ganz harten und traurigen Themen mit Ernst und Tiefe anzupacken: Tod, Verlust und die Vergangenheit mit der systematische Ermordung behinderter Menschen im Nationalsozialismus.
Trotz all der Schwere steckt auch viel Leichtigkeit, Liebe und Freude in diesem Buch. Ein Spagat, der nur wenigen so meisterhaft gelingt. Meine Beschreibung wird dem Buch nicht gerecht. Lest es einfach selbst!

adorei essa HQ. no começo parecia uma criança qualquer causando no mercado e devagarinho introduziu questões de cuidados com pessoas neuro atípicas.
o desenho com lápis de cor tem texturas e explosões muito bonitas e que ficaram muito bem impressas nesse volume. acho que a atmosfera criada pelo traço levou a história para um lugar de conversa com um olhar bem específico sobre o mundo. me fez pensar como pessoas diferentes vivem a mesma situação.
essa HQ me lembrou do meu tio avô Tico. ele faleceu idoso já, depois de uma vida lidando com adaptações para ter conforto vivendo como neuro atípico com baixa passabilidade (não sei se é o termo mais respeitoso, mas acho que se aproxima). meu tio foi acolhido por uma comunidade católica, da qual fazem parte muitas pessoas da minha família. ele morou sozinho a vida toda mas familiares, vizinhos, padres e comerciantes participavam da rotina dele. mesmo sem a história tenebrosa da alemanha nazista, a formação dessas comunidades inclusivas tem paralelos diretos no mundo todo.
gostei muito da tradução também. é impressionante o esforço de trazer a coloquialidade específica no contexto social da narrativa. começa apontando para a infantilização da fala e termina defendendo o jeito de falar de cada personagem.
recomendo muito para adolescentes e adultos.

Det här är en serierroman full av värme, vackert tecknad och med en uppsättning härliga karaktärer som hjälper Noel hitta sin plats i en ny tillvaro. Den känns ganska mycket som en charmig indiefilm, där allvar och humor samsas på ett kärleksfullt sätt.
Der är också en intressant lektion om vad som verkar vara en väldigt unik plats och dess historia, och skapades tydligen i anslutning till Neuerkerodes 150-årsfirande.

Мікаель Росс - Ноель. Неймовірно кумедна та мила історія. Вперше я познайомився з роботами Мікаеля коли побачив інший його комікс - "Золотий хлопчик: юність Бетховена". Перша за все вразила робота з панелями та кольорами. Тож коли видавництво видавництво анонсувало інший комікс цього автора, я зрозумів - це мастгев.
Тут неймовірно тепла та чутлива історія приправлена гумором. Малюнок там колір просто неймовірно доповнюють атмосферу. І анімація вже сама бігає перед очима.
Сама історія розказує про хлопчика Ноеля, який залишається сам після серцевого нападу мамці. Його відвозять до Ноєркероде, селище для людей з вадами розвитку. Де він пізнає себе, заводить друзів, любов і все таке.
Тут неймовірно тепла та чутлива історія приправлена гумором. Малюнок там колір просто неймовірно доповнюють атмосферу. І анімація вже сама бігає перед очима.

I bought this at a library sale today and now I'm sad because it means that this wonderful graphic novel isn't out there anymore for everyone to read.
I'm also sad that I raced through it in one day because I loved reading about Noel and his friends. I might have cried a bit (ok lot) in the end because the story is very very touching. Go to your local library and check it out (or even better: buy it!)

Nach dem „Umfall“ seiner Mutter ändert sich alles im Leben von Noel. Mikael Ross Zeichnungen, die erfrischend unperfekt (wie die Charaktere) sind, begleiten Noel bei seiner Ankunft im neuen Lebensraum in Neuerkerode, einem integrativen Dorf. Die Figuren und ihre gemeinsame Geschichten sind absolut liebenswert beschrieben, auch wenn manche Situationen durchaus Schweißperlen auf der Stirn perlen lassen. Aber wo Schatten ist, ist auch Licht. Oder war es andersherum?
