A kindhearted girl seeks out a solitary polar bear in a tender story of an unlikely friendship that is sure to warm even the coldest of hearts.
Far away in the land of snow and ice lives Cold Paws, a lonely polar bear. With only his silver flute for company, Cold Paws shivers and wonders why he always feels cold inside. But when young Hannah from the nearby village makes friends with him, that chilliness inside Cold Paws begins to melt away. A woolly scarf, a game of jumping jacks, a mug of steaming hot chocolate — what warm gesture will finally take the polar bear's icy feeling away for good?
The illustrations and message of this book are sweet, but nothing that hasn't been done before (and done better). I think if a child is especially fond of polar bears they will like this. It's also a nice wintry book that isn't centered on a holiday, but holds a message of kindness and warmth. Here are some others along those lines: - Share Some Kindness, Bring Some Light - The Star Child
Such a heart warming story! And so endearing. Cold Paws feels distant from the other animals and becomes so lonely. The only thing to comfort his sad, cold, heart is music in the form of a flute, that is. . . until a little girl named Hannah comes along. Hannah, worries about the poor cold, lonely bear, comes to see it every day. Every day she visits the bear gets a little warmer and when she fave him a hug, he felt the warmest he had ever felt before...on the inside. This is what it feels like to feel loved and happy. A wonderful story to explain to you children or your own children why they feel farm and fuzzy in side when they feel loved.
All Cold Paws the polar bear wanted was a friend. Without a friend, he couldn't be what a polar bear should be, warm in his frozen homeland. All that changed one day when a little girl heard him playing the flute and decided to help him get warm.
Cute story! It led to a good discussion about why sometimes people have cold hearts. Usually, they have been hurt or have some reason for not having a loving heart. Sometimes a little understanding is all it takes.
I read this story often during the Winter months with my Pre-K students. It has beautiful artwork, and tells the tale of a girl who becomes friends with a polar bear. This polar bear is greatly feared in her community, but she sees through the stories to see the real "person" of the bear. It's a great book to talk about empathy, compassion, love, and friendship with children. Would definitely recommend!
A polar bear suffers the shivers, but when a young girl offers him her friendship his heart is warmed.
Watercolor, ink and pastel illustrations in a predominately cool color palette give readers a chilly feel that is remedied by the heart-warming unlikely friendship. PreK-2.
