At six-years old, Kay C. Rice wrote her first story and she has wanted to be an author ever since. She lives in Oklahoma with her husband and two amazing kids. She prefers hot chocolate to coffee and loves a good happily ever after. Reading has always been a way of escaping to other universes and now that she is mostly grown up, she wanted to create a world for others to get lost in as well.
This book is amazing. A fellow ARC reader said this author is the love child of Rebecca Yarros and Sara J. Maas, I couldn't agree more. This is a perfect first-time fantasy book for anyone looking to get into fantasy.
I loved the characters in the book and the main Character Fraya is freaking amazing. I love her demeanor and attitude throughout the book. She is truly badass.
The other characters in the book are fun and play so many different roles in Fraya's life.
I can't wait to read the second book. I highly highly recommend this book.
Great debut novel. I loved the plot, and the banter between main characters. It’s a quick read, but I do wish this was a little longer so we got more world building, and details about dragons and magic system. Hopefully some of the questions that weren’t answered are answered in book 2, which needs to be here soon because that was a crazy cliffhanger!
I really liked this book. It was action packed from page one. The witty banter of almost all the characters had me laughing out loud. The chapters were short which encouraged me to want to keep reading. There wasn’t a lot of world building which sometimes meant the story jumped from one action scene to the next but I actually liked that. It is definitely different than reading a book with a lot of details. I can’t wait for the next book.
Summary: Fraya’s had mysterious powers and a growing mark on her since she was little. Her and her father were always moving, never staying in one place too long. Fraya meets 2 mysterious men and things escalate quickly. The next thing she knows she must find Moir, an ancient dragon God. Adventures, deceptive alliances, controlling her powers, and evil amidst. Who can she trust? Can she trust anyone?
Favorite quotes: “Dark and grumpy. I didn’t know your name, so I gave you one.”
“What are you rubbing from? … Bad choices.”
“I prefer not to turn my back to a traitor, one knife in my back is plenty.”
I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.
I received this book as an ARC and agreed to provide an honest review in exchange. Initially, the prologue had me excited for the book. However, things quickly went downhill. This book could best be described as underdeveloped. There is not nearly enough introduction of each character or building of character relationships. I feel like suddenly relationships just existed and there was no foundation for why. I had no bond with the characters and if they were eliminated from the story or betrayed the FMC I was unmoved and just didn’t care. There is not enough world building. There could have been much more development of the history in this story. It was eluded to but I felt I had an incomplete view on what was happening. There was an abundance of irrelevant description and not enough description when it came to important details. Transitions in this story are essentially nonexistent and so there is no flow. In the middle of a chapter you may change locations and characters from one paragraph to another. I think the story had potential and could have been interesting, but needed so much more for the reader to become invested. Had this not been an ARC I would have DNFd. This is a short book and it took me 17 days to finish. In comparison, I’ve finished 5 other books while trudging through this one.
This book happens to be my first ARC read and I am so glad it was this book! I was hooked from the first quote found on the back. “I never wanted to be a hero. Heroes never get happy endings, not really.” Who wouldn’t read that and be hooked?!
In this book you will follow the main character, Fraya, as she battles emotions no person should have to deal with. She is a feisty, fierce, independent woman who doesn’t take anything from anyone. She follows her instincts as her world she once knew crashes. Follow along as she grows and learns more about herself.
Be warned you will find yourself in a whirlwind of emotions. By the end you may not even know how to feel but this book leaves you wanting more!
Kay definitely has a way of reeling you in and making it where you don’t want to put this book down. Then you get to the end and you’re left with even more questions!
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
If you enjoy stories set in fantasy worlds complete with dragons, villains, and intrigue, you will love this book! I truly could not put it down and finished it in two days, but I will be reading it again. With many exciting twists and turns and beautifully done world-building that neither slowed the pacing nor required me to constantly reference the map at the beginning of the story, it left me turning each page wondering what would happen next. I appreciated having a story that left me guessing and then ended in a cliffhanger that left me whispering a shocked, "No!" as I read the final words. I am looking forward to the second book and all of the unanswered questions it will answer.
I received an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, from the very beginning this book captivated me. It's a real page turner and extremely difficult to put down. This amazing fantasy is full of twists, turns, betrayals, and a feisty, strong-willed female main character. Oh! There's also dragons!!! This book made me cry, laugh, and exclaim, "WHAAAT" multiple times.
I saw one of the other arc readers say that Kay Rice is the love child of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros and I could not agree more with that statement. I strongly recommend this book to everyone and cannot wait for book 2.
Phenomenal book! A very quick read that kept me turning the pages. The main Chacater Fraya, is strong willed and super fiesty. Her journey started from having amazing powers to searching and discovering who she is. The Banter between Fraya and her love interests is beyond entertaining. “I will hurt you.” I yell through the door. “I look forward to it.” He chuckles." I am a sap for whitty banter and toxic love interests. Anyways I while heartily give this book a 5⭐️ a review.
Fabulous book! It was a great quick read and left you ready for the book two. Absolutely loved the witty banter between characters and the fast paced storyline. Definitely a must read for those fantasy lovers out there.
Kay C Rice did an amazing job, she better be writing that second book, it is definitely in high demand!
Listen, I don't think I've ever given a book 5 stars. But damn this book is good! The fantasy, the romance, the SUSPENSE/THRILL, angst all of it was breathtaking! I read this in one day. One. Day. I never wanted it to end and am seriously begging for a second book!!
This book was a fantastic read from start to finish.
You want enemies to lovers? ✔️ You want fantasy adventure? ✔️ You want unanswered questions that will haunt your soul and leave you begging for the next book? ✔️
DG is my new book boyfriend. I love Fraya with her spunk and sarcasm. I love that she faces things head on. This book at me ugly crying at the end. I need the next book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Do you love : 🐉 Dragons? Fantasy? Enemies to lovers ? Found family? Even a slow burn?
Then what can I say, but WOW. This book is for you.
I read this book in a total of 4 hours. 4 continuous hours. Once I picked it up, I literally could NOT put it down. I laughed, and I DEFINITELY cried in a few different chapters!
There were plot twists after plot twists. Things I NEVER saw coming.
The main female character Fraya is snarky, sassy, and definitely strong-willed - her relatable character makes the story so easy to fall into!
I gave this story a rating of 4.7 [rounds up to 5 in my opinion for Goodreads]. What could have made it a 5? I would love a little ~more~ spice, but that definitely didn't alter how wonderful this story this was!
No spoilers given, but here is my favorite quote from the whole book. Hopefully, it'll draw you into this book , so you give it a chance too!
"I would burn this world to the ground if you asked me to, and wouldn't even think twice about it."
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
[I received an ARC of this book, but this review is my own honest opinion]
If you want to watch a live review, as I read the book, head on over to my tiktok and check it out!
One would usually start a review by giving a short summary, but considering I did not finish this book, I’ll just explain what didn’t work for me.
Let’s start with the characters. Our MC, Fraya, felt a little bland and her motivations were unclear. She’s also just not very likable in my opinion. I think she’s meant to seem feisty but often comes across more abrasive and aloof. She doesn't have a distinct personality and that does not make for a relatable character. There’s also little to no backstory about her to hook you into the rest of the book. I would’ve liked to learn more about her to feel a connection. The only other character we spend any time with (as of 20% into the book) is Luca, who I also felt was lacking personality and depth.
As for the plot, you don’t get much in terms of progression as far as I read, other than a brief taste of politics in the prologue. I wish there had been more detail and exploration of that aspect. It just wasn’t enough to draw me in.
Moving on to pacing and writing style- this was my biggest issue. The writing didn’t flow for me, often feeling robotic and disjointed. The dialogue felt non-conversational and didn’t do much to develop character relationships. There was a bluntness to the writing that felt clunky and was difficult to follow at times.
Overall, I feel the beginning of this book needed more world building, character exploration, and editing. A lot of it didn’t feel cohesive to me.
Note- These are all just personal opinions and constructive criticism. Of course, just because this book wasn’t for me doesn’t mean it won’t be great for others. I just wasn’t enjoying it and for me, a dnf is a one star.
First thank you to Kay for gifting this as an arc to read for her. Because omg it’s so good and beautiful.
Mark Of Ancients is a beautiful, emotional, detailed and wonderful story. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The characters are amazing, the little twists are enticing and the slow burn of enemies to lovers and enemies to friends are just amazing.
Fraya is a young woman trying to find life and her destiny after everything has been taken from her by the evil mad king. She finds her dragon friends and the people who will fight to the death for her and against her. She meets beautiful people and kids willing to do whatever they can to help her take back her throne.
We have the “innocent” looking friends who may or may not be the enemy and the rugged handsome friend who is a protector but also confusing as hell. The wonderful cook in the castle Mamma T and so many wonderful strong characters who made me fall deeper in love with this story.
Did I cry? Yes I bawled my eyes out in parts of this story because Kay is able to truly depict the emotion needed for this story there were parts that made me feel things I hadn’t felt while reading in a very long time. She made me giggle at the snark she used as well. I truly enjoy this book!
Thank you for gifting me this arc and these are all my own opinions on this book!
All I am saying is the fact that I ARC read this a month before it’s even been released… and it’ll be even longer until book 2 is released should be a crime!! (I’m joking… well kind of)
This book was the perfect thirst quench for my dragon obsession lately. Fraya is a bad ass who is extremely lovable and honorable at the same time. Her character arc is one of my favorites.
If you’re looking for a book with excellent banter, hot love interests, great plot/world building, and DRAGONS then this book is for you! Kay pulls you in and captivates you to the point where you don’t even notice that you’re 80% through the book…
Nevertheless if that is not enough to convince you then…
Everyone’s favorite part… the spice… she’s sitting at a 🌶️… BUT the tension is REALLLLLL and we get not one BUT two love interests so you know Kay was keeping us on our tippy toes!
This book does end in a cliffhanger and all I have to say is I need answers today not tomorrow. I need all the nitty gritty details and spoilers. So please write book 2 ASAP! Thank you!
(I received an ARC digital copy in exchange for an honest review so here are my opinions)
I really enjoyed this book. Ideally I would have rated it 3.5 ⭐️s but Goodreads doesn’t do that so I round up.
Starting with my favorite things about this. The storyline and plot for this book were absolutely amazing. I loved the entire basis of this novel. I loved the characters and the relationships I felt they have/had.
Now as to the reason for my rating, as amazing as the storyline was I felt like I was lost in the beginning for the first 45% of the book. Not that I didn’t understand but it was action after action and I would find myself just confused on how I from one place to another so quickly. And although that may sound negative I want to stress that it was all so entertaining and I enjoyed all the dialogue even then. I would stop and reread parts to realize the transitions. I do read a lot of fantasy and sometimes I know it takes me a while to embrace a new world. I agree some of the other reviews that this could have used more world building, that probably would have helped me stay in the story instead of rereading.
The triumph of the story is the main character in my opinion. She is relatable in how she handles her emotions and she is funny in a sarcastic way and she is strong. I liked watching things unfold from her pov as she was learning things, we did too.
As a debut novel I think this book is more than worthy of a read and I am excited for what the author writes next. It’s such a promising story and I need to know what happens.
I am sure based on her feedback that she is going to build on the world, the dragons, and the characters even if she hadn’t planned to before. I had seen the author on Tiktok ask for ARC readers and I had never been one before…. but as she explained her story I knew it was something I had to at least apply for lol.
If you are a fan of dragons, enemies to lovers, sarcastic characters, and fantasy. I think you would like this book.
Mark of Ancients is a riveting book. The story and plot are there but, if I am being a little honest, the world building is not as strong as it could be causing it to feel a little rushed. I genuinely enjoyed the book as Fraya is an inspiring character. I wish I could give this book 5 stars because it truly is riveting! It had me hooked for HOURS just sitting on my couch reading it non-stop. It’s an innovative story with wonderful characters, a bada** heroine, a light love triangle (kind of glad it didn’t linger on this), and well thought out victories and failures. This is a show don’t tell kind of read, so if that is not your thing, don’t pick this story up, or if you want to give it a try, choose this one! It’s a very easy read, keeps you interested to know what on earth is going to happen next! Happy reading! :)
I received an advanced copy of this book through book funnel and this is my honest review.
Wow. What an incredible read. This was my first time reading a book with dragons in it and it did not disappoint. From the start of the book I was hooked and rooting for Fraya to defeat the dark king. It ended on a cliff hanger and I'm so excited to find out what happens next.
I cannot believe how quickly I fell in love with this book it is absolutely amazing I love the adventure and the characters absolutely mind blowing I highly recommend you go read this book as soon as possible thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read this amazing book and I can't wait to see what else you come up with
5 stars! Absolutely loved this book! Kept me sucked into the world the entire time! Dragons, enemies to lovers, epic fantasy, magic…what more could you ask for?! I literally can’t think of a combo that I like more 😂 characters were so easy to like/get attached to, but oh my goodness the character plot twists kept coming left and right. Loved the ending, and can’t wait for more!
Dragons, lies, betrayal, love, sacrifices, adventure and mystery all wrapped up in one book. This book has a strong willed woman who has to be a Hero. She slowly finds out about herself and what she is. On her journey she finds out who she can trust and who has her back. Fraya makes friends and enemies along the way. Mark of Ancients starts out strong and had me from the beginning. The further I got into the book and story, the harder it was to put down! I can’t wait until the next book in the series
ARC REVIEW: Thank you so much to the author for providing an e-book in exchange for a review!
I found this to be a good debut novel. The premise and whole story was right up my alley, but I ultimately felt there is still room for improvement.
I LOVED the first line and how the author throws us into the action during the prologue. I also continued to enjoy the story overall. However, the pacing and writing as the story continued were my biggest issue. The writing often felt disjointed and was difficult to follow at times. There were a few instances where there would be abrupt jumps in time from one sentence to the next with no breaks. Transitions and more time spent including details within action would vastly improve the writing and pacing.
Similar to the pacing of the the story, I found the pacing of relationships to be rushed (between FMC and the love interest especially, but all other characters as well). The FMC seemed to bond with nearly every other main character she came across. Both her and her loved interest seemed to go from being strangers to instantly in love. While this could be due to a characters nature, it felt forced on a FMC who had trust issues. I wish more time was spent developing these relationships.
That being said, I look forward to seeing how much the author improves as she continues to write! The series has amazing potential.
I received an ARC copy from the wonderful author of this book. I hate receiving arcs to leave negative reviews, and this is just my personal opinion. Absolutely no hate to the author, as she is very sweet and the ARC experience she created was so thoughtful and personal.
I did start the book, but it felt very YA and I wasn’t really feeling it, so I DNFd it early on.
I think that we should have pulled the reins in and built our character first. Her dad is introduced and killed in like two pages, so there’s no emotion there at all. Then we rush headfirst into a very all over the place set up. It felt like we were being told the story all in one breath, by someone with adhd.
Some things are so vaguely described that I can’t even picture what is happening and get confused.
Conversations feel weird and inorganic, and our relationship with Luca felt incredibly forced.
This book feels very choppy and underdeveloped. I think further editing and story building, as well as working on creative writing skills, would have benefitted the book greatly.
I think slowing down and letting us build a bond with characters and creating a more organic character arc and scenes would be very beneficial for her next book.
I received this as an ARC for a debut novel in exchange for an honest review. I got about 20% through and did not finish. The writing was very choppy. The author over used description to the point where it was almost hard to follow. At some points I had to go back and re-read because the story changed scenes so abruptly that I was sure I had missed something.
The dialogue between characters was so juvenile compared to the overuse of descriptive terms that it didn’t go well together. There was zero character development or world building in the part that I read. Perhaps it gets more in depth. But unfortunately my TBR is extensive and I am choosing to read something that I enjoy instead.
I think the story has potential but it’s almost like it’s the too of an iceberg where there could be so much more to it underneath that just isn’t there.
I don’t even know where to begin. It had me hooked from the very first page and I couldn’t put it down! So many twist and breath catching moments! This is going to be one I definitely read multiple times! I can’t wait for the next one to come out already! Truly amazing!
This was a great debut and I can’t wait for book 2.
Freya is a spitfire from chapter 1 and never loses her spunk through the end. The banter, the twists, the turns had me turning the pages all day until I got to the end.
If you love dragons, magic, battles and betrayal then pick up this book!
***This contains Slovene review (which is my native language) and English review of the book. Because I read the book in English, the English review is first, and the Slovene review is second.***
ENGLISH REVIEW Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5 stars)
Although I usually do not read fantasy books, Kay C. Rice's debut "Mark of Ancients" pleasantly surprised me. Before I started reading, I had no particular expectations, but I found that the book was very well-written and completely captivated me.
Story:
The story follows the lives of people coexisting with dragons in a world where they strive to solve the mysteries of the past and create a better future for their people. The narrative is full of tense moments and surprising twists that keep the reader engaged until the very end. Each event in the book is carefully woven and leads to a greater understanding of the world the author has created.
Characters:
The characters in the book are very well-designed, both main and supporting. They allow the reader to visualize and better understand them. My favorite character was Freya, a strong, independent woman who fears no danger or a stronger opponent. Her characterization is inspiring and adds depth to the overall story.
World-building:
Kay C. Rice has created a rich and detailed world full of mythology and secrets. The descriptions of the world are vivid and picturesque, allowing readers to easily immerse themselves in the story.
Writing style:
Kay C. Rice's writing style is fluid and readable, suitable for both more demanding readers and those new to the fantasy genre. The dialogues are natural and contribute to character development and the progression of the story. The author skillfully creates tension and emotional resonance with her writing, making the reading experience smooth and engaging.
Conclusion:
I would rate the entire book with five stars. The book ends at a point where it is not entirely clear what has happened or what will happen next, indicating that it is part of a series. I eagerly await the continuation. I warmly recommend "Mark of Ancients" to both demanding fantasy readers and those just venturing into the fantasy world. Trust me, you won't regret it!
SLOVENE REVIEW Ocena: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5 zvezdic)
Čeprav običajno ne berem fantazijskih knjig, me je prvenec avtorice Kay C. Rice "Mark of Ancients" neverjetno pozitivno presenetil. Pred začetkom branja nisem imela posebnih pričakovanj, vendar sem ugotovila, da je knjiga zelo dobro napisana in me je popolnoma pritegnila.
Zgodba:
Gradnja sveta
Avtorica zna s svojim pisanjem ustvariti napetost in čustveno resonanco, kar omogoča tekoče in angažirajoče branje.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review and I really enjoyed it. Although the story contains many common themes and tropes such as dragons, magical powers, enemies to lovers, royal politics, and war, I thought it was still very unique in how those themes were used. The very beginning of the story gave me goosebumps and really reeled me in and I enjoyed following the MFC Fraya’s journey throughout the story as she learns about herself and develops from a one track character to a character having to deal with a lot of emotional turmoil and action. There were a lot of twists and turns in this story that I did not see coming, some good and some bad and it was really enjoyable to read. I’ve seen some people say that the book was not enjoyable for them because there was not enough world building and I wanted to add that although it is true that the story does lack some world building, for me this did not get in the way of my enjoyment of the story. I think because the plot twists and the unique take on the themes kept me engaged despite the lack of world building aspects. My only criticism is that there were some parts of the book that felt a little chunky and didn’t flow quite right which caused it to be a little confusing to understand which is why this story isn’t quite a 5 star for me. Overall it was still a very enjoyable and unique read!
Fraya has a secret. One that has kept her on the run and hiding for all her life. One that she MUST protect because her life depends on it. Unfortunately, issues arise and tragedy strikes. The hunt is on, as Fraya begins her journey of self-discovery…and revenge.
I LOVED the prologue, it was extremely intriguing and set up for an amazing story. I also think the intention for the plot was solid with wonderful potential. My favorite character without a doubt was Astrid, so brave and strong; very wise beyond her years.
Where this book fell short for me is it felt slightly predictable and rushed; lacking world building and character depth / connection. The chapters felt chopping, giving me the “end scene fade to black” feel, then sometimes starting up in a place where I felt like I missed something. I also felt confused sometimes with character dialogue, relationships, and names / alternate names. Like there wasn’t enough information about a person to remember their name or an alternative name was mentioned once and I had no idea who it belonged to.
Overall, it was still an enjoyable read with an interesting plot. There were a couple plot twist that left my jaw on the floor. Though the book felt average to me, I did like it and I look forward to reading book 2.
