Wannabe fine art photographer Peter Skye struggles to support himself—and his dog Edwyn—by freelancing for large corporations, even though he’s appalled by the way they treat their employees. When his sister Catherine convinces him to help her wealthy husband Lee cover up a road rage incident that threatens to sink his succession to CEO, Peter begrudgingly agrees to work with the company’s fixer to hush up the scandal.
Immediately, his corporate qualms intensify as he’s dragged into an unfamiliar world of intrigue and suspicion. It soon becomes evident that the young man Lee assaulted, Tony, isn’t content to fade away into the background. Complicating matters further, Peter unexpectedly falls for Tony’s beautiful sister, Jessica.
As events race to a climax, Peter hatches a desperate plan to free his family from the obligations of corporate succession, all the while trying to make ends meet and keep his artistic soul alive.
Set in Toronto, Losing It is full of humour, engaging characters and sharp commentary about misplaced ambition, the meaning of success, life in the corporate jungle, and beer.
It's timely; thoughtful; thought-provoking; highly readable -- and funny. The narrator speaks with a friendly tone and honesty that keep the reader fully engaged and the well-worded descriptions of many of Toronto's neighbourhoods put the reader who knows the city at ease. First-time author Hally makes it look easy.
A tight write of corporate proportions combined with a quick witted plot. Simon Hally's novel is a page-turner peppered with smiles and chuckles characters and prose.
Set in Toronto, Simon Hally’s thought-provoking and often funny novel “Losing it” opens as Peter Skye, a talented but financially struggling fine art photographer is asked to help untangle his wealthy brother-in-law from a road rage incident that could cost him his succession as the next CEO of his family’s business.
Dragged into a contentious situation even though the victim Tony Gibran is only asking to have his father’s car repaired before his parents return, the situation soon heats up with Peter’s involvement with the victim’s beautiful sister; a shooting; and a desperate plan to free his brother-in-law Lee Bradlington from being the next CEO
Well-written, entertaining and funny, the intensity increases as Peter finds himself dealing with not only his brother-in-law’s challenges and his own struggle to support himself and his dog Edwyn, but to choose the creative path in his chosen career that he will find the most rewarding. The plot is filled with memorable characters from different walks in life who have to make tough choices but more often than not stand behind one another. Fascinating from beginning to end, this is a novel that will keep you riveted from beginning to the end.
I thoroughly enjoyed Simon Hally’s first novel “Losing It” and look forward to reading more by this talented author in future.
