England in 1812 is mired in the Napoleonic wars. Royal Navy Lieutenant Justin Deveraux, driven by a need to succeed on his own merits, without benefit of name or title, has kept his identity secret. Raised in the Avon countryside, betrothed at the age of seven, Sarah knew she would be a duchess, someday. At seventeen she met her fiancé a month before their London wedding. They spent three months together before Justin returned to his duties at sea, leaving Sarah behind. Four years later, the course of their lives changes. Napoleon is defeated. Justin's father is murdered. Ordered home, Justin assumes the overwhelming responsibility of being the Duke of Wessex. Sarah is no longer a love sick girl. The years of separation and loneliness have turned to anger, hardening her into a cool, sophisticated woman. Sarah is not the Duchess Justin expected. The rekindling of their romance is threatened by rumor, mistrust, and betrayal. While searching for the truth in their lives and hearts, they search England for the people who killed Justin's father.
This was a fabulous mystery romance with adventure, intrigue, and betrayal. It was completely believable with real characters and English Regency charm. I devoured this book in an afternoon because I was so intent on finding out what was going to happen next. The mystery was woven into the story so well that it made a tapestry of intrigue that I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen between Justin and Sarah. Sarah is the kind of FMC I love. She’s smart, sensible, honorable, and has all the best qualities of a very strong female character. It was her vulnerable side that really made the plot come alive. For me, it was a refreshing take on Regency Romance.
The story was an emotional rollercoaster ride that I very much enjoyed. When a writer elicits emotion and keeps you reading until your eyes are blurry, you know it is a terrific, entertaining read and well worth the time. I can’t wait to read book two in the series, which I just downloaded to my Kindle.
This was a new author for me and I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I have already downloaded the next book in the series and am looking forward to reading about the next member of the Deveraux family to get their happy ever after.
