The Power of Closure: Why We Want It, How to Get It and When to Walk Away

Rate this book
"If only I could get some closure..." If you've found yourself saying these words, you're not alone. When you've lost a relationship, a job, or a loved one, closure can seem as elusive as it is necessary. Psychotherapist and relationship coach Gary McClain says it's one of the most common - and important - issues his clients bring up.

In this empathetic and insightful guide, Dr McClain explains why the promise of closure is so appealing - and why it's not always all it's cracked up to be. He walks readers through what closure is (and isn't), the reasons we want it, how to seek it in healthy and productive ways, and ways to move forward when we don't get the closure we're looking for. Learn how to find peace and leave regret behind when you can't stop obsessing about a fight with a friend, when your world has been turned upside down by a breakup, or when a loved one has died. Whether you're dealing with the pain of loss or are simply feeling the need to tie up a loose end, big or small, in a relationship, the power of closure will help you let go of the past and embrace the future.

The Power of Closure by Gary McClain is a compelling and thought-provoking exploration of one of the most universal human desires: the need for closure. McClain masterfully blends psychology, personal stories, and practical advice to help readers understand why we seek closure in various aspects of our lives, from relationships to career choices. His insights into how unresolved feelings can weigh on us emotionally and mentally offer a fresh perspective on why closure is so critical for personal growth. The book does an excellent job of explaining the process of identifying when closure is needed, how to approach it, and recognizing when it's best to simply walk away.

What makes this book particularly powerful is its practical approach. McClain doesn't just focus on abstract ideas but provides actionable steps for readers to use in their own lives. His advice on when to push for resolution and when to accept ambiguity is both relatable and liberating. Whether you're struggling with an old wound, seeking peace from a tough decision, or wanting to make sense of past experiences, The Power of Closure offers invaluable guidance for anyone looking to move forward with clarity and confidence. It's a must-read for anyone looking to free themselves from the emotional baggage of unfinished business.

as someone with adhd, in which i need to understand what someone actually means through direct speech, not accepting closure will put me into a thousand questions of why, what, and how—why did it happen; what did i do to experience this, how am i supposed to react to this situation

this book is trying to remind you of what you can do when you’re or not getting the closure. this book emphasis on how past experiences can shape who we are today based on the author’s expertise as a professional and his experience with his patients

however, there are a few things that become my concern as i read through the book

1. i wonder if the names of clients were real. if they really were, i hope they had given the consent. even though, i am sure the author knows it better, but there is no a single page of disclaimer

2. not in a bad way, but the more i flip the book, the more convinced i am that the world is too colourful to be seen in black and white form. i was a little overwhelmed with every information about each client’s experience, like, “oh... the root is so deep...”

but, i don’t see anything bad about this book. if you want to see read about closure and how we should take care ourselves when we do or don’t get one, you can go with this. you won’t be confused by complicated psychology theories if you’re not studying it

The Power of Closure is a self-help book teaches us how to deal difficult emotions and moving on from the past. Gary McClain explains why people seek closure after loss, conflict, disgreement, disappointment. Author also explains anger is the main culprit in not maintaining deeper feelings. And acceptance is the best way than closure! So these kind of control if we have, healing copes up in our life.
Written in simple language with practical advice, the book encourages readers to accept what they cannot change and focus on healing. Overall, it is a thoughtful and useful guide to finding peace and moving forward.

Одна з небагатьох книжок на важливу тему: про те, як знайти відчуття завершеності у стосунках із людьми. І що робити, коли це неможливо. Про прийняття, як його досягти і як легше відпускати реальність життя. Дуже сподобалася.

It resonates deeply how closure can be such a powerful force for healing and moving forward, yet can also become a trap if we pursue it indefinitely. I especially appreciated the insights on recognizing when to walk away — sometimes the healthiest choice is accepting that we may never get the answers we want.
