The Power of Closure: Why We Want It, How to Get It and When to Walk Away

Rate this book
"If only I could get some closure..." If you've found yourself saying these words, you're not alone. When you've lost a relationship, a job, or a loved one, closure can seem as elusive as it is necessary. Psychotherapist and relationship coach Gary McClain says it's one of the most common - and important - issues his clients bring up.

In this empathetic and insightful guide, Dr McClain explains why the promise of closure is so appealing - and why it's not always all it's cracked up to be. He walks readers through what closure is (and isn't), the reasons we want it, how to seek it in healthy and productive ways, and ways to move forward when we don't get the closure we're looking for. Learn how to find peace and leave regret behind when you can't stop obsessing about a fight with a friend, when your world has been turned upside down by a breakup, or when a loved one has died. Whether you're dealing with the pain of loss or are simply feeling the need to tie up a loose end, big or small, in a relationship, the power of closure will help you let go of the past and embrace the future.

The Power of Closure by Gary McClain is a compelling and thought-provoking exploration of one of the most universal human desires: the need for closure. McClain masterfully blends psychology, personal stories, and practical advice to help readers understand why we seek closure in various aspects of our lives, from relationships to career choices. His insights into how unresolved feelings can weigh on us emotionally and mentally offer a fresh perspective on why closure is so critical for personal growth. The book does an excellent job of explaining the process of identifying when closure is needed, how to approach it, and recognizing when it's best to simply walk away.

What makes this book particularly powerful is its practical approach. McClain doesn't just focus on abstract ideas but provides actionable steps for readers to use in their own lives. His advice on when to push for resolution and when to accept ambiguity is both relatable and liberating. Whether you're struggling with an old wound, seeking peace from a tough decision, or wanting to make sense of past experiences, The Power of Closure offers invaluable guidance for anyone looking to move forward with clarity and confidence. It's a must-read for anyone looking to free themselves from the emotional baggage of unfinished business.

I picked this up for no other reason than orange is my favorite color so the color of the book stood out to me 😂 I gained a great understanding of what closure is and isn’t. I loved the examples/real life stories it helped me understand different terms or situations.

Одна з небагатьох книжок на важливу тему: про те, як знайти відчуття завершеності у стосунках із людьми. І що робити, коли це неможливо. Про прийняття, як його досягти і як легше відпускати реальність життя. Дуже сподобалася.

It resonates deeply how closure can be such a powerful force for healing and moving forward, yet can also become a trap if we pursue it indefinitely. I especially appreciated the insights on recognizing when to walk away — sometimes the healthiest choice is accepting that we may never get the answers we want.

My therapist suggested this book and I can see why. Highly recommend if you are seeking closure or wondering if you need it!
