I hated this volume. In the last book, Miman built this really nice foundation between Hime and Yano just to completely ignore Yano for a knockoff version, like what??? I don't give a shit about Kanoko (knockoff Yano). At first, I shipped her with Tachibana (the stoic megane) because it seemed like they were going for a Megane/Tsundere relationship, but Kanoko is mean to everybody. She's conniving, annoying, and she takes non-consensual photos of Hime and touches her while she's sleeping like all the time. IT'S NOT OKAY! Kanoko is obsessed with Hime. She acts wimpy around other women and refuses to talk to them. She says she wants Hime to be happy because she "loves" her or whatever, but then she does everything in her power to sabotage Hime's relationships with other girls. Not to mention, Kanoko thinks lowly of literally every woman who isn't Hime. Her internalized misogyny is boundless and it makes it really hard to read from her point of view when she's antagonizing everyone behind their backs. Maybe something got lost in translation, but it felt like Miman had no idea where they wanted to go with this arc. They shouldn't have put so much focus on Kanoko, especially so soon after Hime rebuilt her relationship with Yano. I'll keep reading, but I hate it here right now.
You know how in 2019, we're all still surrounded by that one stereotype we haven't been able to shake for years and years? You know the one--the pretty, trendy girl who's really into fashion and makeup and maybe even popular things. She's always treated like a shallow, stupid bimbo who often throws herself at guys, is many times some poorly veiled vehicle for slut-shaming, and is mean for no reason to the heroine, who is totally unlike her because she's a girl with a BRAIN! ...I've seen this character in many different variations, all equally boring and irritating, and unfortunately a popular choice with women authors, for some reason.
Fortunately, this comic managed to subvert that. Their trendy teen--in their slang referred to as a "gyaru"--is immediately hit with all the popular assumptions people normally make when they see her "type." But she's actually treated like a human being. Can you believe it? She avidly *gasp* reads books, is keen and intuitive, and is very observant of the people around her. She'll call out BS when she has to. I love her so much, especially because even now I still long for seeing more characters like her.
I need to freeze this book now and make a hearty stew of it that I can consume in tiny portions in order to survive through the cold, unforgiving winter of popular sexism.
Not much happens until the end and we find out how Kanoko's obsession with Hime started. I don't really care for Tachibana/Kanoko tbh. They're still cute and I like seeing how their relationship progresses, but I prefer reading about Yano/Hime.
I just can't get into these. I think i am going to put a pause and find a manga that is gayer. if i can't find one then ill come back. kanako was pissing me off with the whole jealousy thing. it stretched on the entire book and i see no future of it slowing down. also her like hatred/relationship with tachibana was confusing me and too extreme.
I don’t know. Another volume where nothing much happens except the characters maneuvering to win a popularity contest (really?) and one of the characters being incredibly petulant and irritating the entire way through. There’s only one interesting, multifaceted character here, and she doesn’t get nearly enough page time. The main character, who I expected to have some character development by now, is still pretty much a blank slate. In summary, I found this volume and the previous one incredibly boring. Glad to see other people enjoying this series, but it’s not for me.
Not much I want to add from my original review, other than I think this volume's a lot better than I initially gave it credit for. The drama is top tier without being over the top like most shoujo manga and the characters are a blast to read. This has been a fun rereading experience!
Original review posted 5/27/19:
Ohhh, the drama! The juicy, juicy, drama! I have to say, I'm starting to enjoy characters that embrace the worse parts of their personality (or at least acknowledge them). And I really do like HIme for being as expressive and open with her emotions as she is. Granted, I'd love to see her develop into a person that kind better hide the worse parts of herself, but I would never want to see them leave entirely. Also, her choosing to drop out of the running for Blume and acknowledging Yano's growth was a big leap in character development and I loved it. I am super curious about Sumika's backstory and hope to get more of it in the next volume. Really enjoying this series, can't wait for the next volume!
Note: minor spoilers, though if you’re reading a review for volume 3, I don’t think they are big spoilers
Not my favorite installment, there wasn’t enough Hime and Yano in this one for me. It’s not bad and it moves the plot along.
Quick Thoughts: - Though I enjoy the character Kanoko. and this volume mostly focused on her, I wasn’t jazzed with this - While this kind of pinning isn’t a storyline I enjoy, I’m glad it isn’t a one chapter thing that doesn’t really get mentioned again - The book mentioned in the Salon that Kanoko looks up later is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin and the spoof with zombies is a real thing (though it was a book before it was a movie) called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith, if you were wondering - We get Kanoko’s backstory with Hime and better insight into Kanoko who isn’t just this painfully shy person - Not much of Hime and Yano which is a shame, those parts really seem to shine
Overall not thrilled with this one but happy that the creator took her time with this story plot. It could have easily been a gag or brushed off but it wasn’t so that was cool
This volume is all about Kanoko and Tachibana! There's a popularity contest that Hime is hoping to win, and Kanoko (who is desparately in love with Hime) also wants Hime to win! But how can Kanoko support Hime without letting her true feelings show? And what happens if winning means that Hime and Yano will grow closer as Shwestern? Luckily you have Tachibana intervening, trying to befriend Kanoko and screw up the whole relationship. Or unluckily, I guess. Lots of interactions between these two, with Tachibana getting so little development in the first two volumes and Kanoko especially never interacting with her. The popularity contest thing isn't a great plot device in my opinion, but Kanoko's backstory and how she befriends Tachibana is really cute.
I am really not Kanoko this volume. Her crush is bordering on obsessive, and the non-consensual pictures and light touches aren't a good look. For someone who says she wants Hime to be happy, she's certainly trying everything to make sure Hime has a ruined relationship with the other girls. It's downright territorial, and it seems like at any given moment, it can switch to horror. I hope it gets better and has less focus on Kanoko and more on Hime and Yano building themselves back up. I also hope that at some point, Kanoko's behavior is revealed, and it's called out by more people than Tachibana.

Really enjoyed this volume! This series just keeps getting better. I’ve read this volume three times before officially logging it in and it also made me pull the previous two volumes down from the shelf and read them again.
finally, some actual legit yuri shadows! This one shifts focus to Kanoko and her very one-sided crush on Hime. Everyone is still an idiot (Sumika seems to be the only well-adjusted person in the entire fiction) but its gettin interesting
Hmm, this one is more setting up feeling though am enjoying Blume arc. Kinda like that Hime tends to gravitate towards solitary grumpy types lol. I honestly want more of Sumiko’s backstory!
It’s frustrating when characters look alike, I totally got confused here. I apparently waited too long between the second book and this one to follow along. 😅
I'm beginning to suspect that all of the characters of this manga have damaged personalities. I still have an intense dislike for Hime, the protagonist.
Didn't really enjoy this volume so much. Storyline could be interesting, but just isn't the way it is done. We'll see what the next one brings before deciding to finish the series or not.
