In the far reaches of space the descendants of humanity have evolved into two vastly different cultures. On the planet Rire, the Reetions use computer technology to ensure comfort and equality for all. On Gelion, genetically modified Sevolites adhere to a strict A-hierarchy based on racial purity and ones ability to wield a sword. As war threatens to destroy both worlds, two men, Erien of Rire and Amel of Gelion, attempt to preserve the fragile peace. Together they hope to unravel the complex web of intrigues and ancient hatred that threatens to destroy A-humanity itself. This is book four of the Okal Rel Saga, a massive ten part epic, of love, war, betrayal, and hope.
The Okal Rel universe of author Lynda Williams is peopled by larger-than-life characters navigating cross-cultural dramas.
In 2021 the series is the basis of an experimental word-gaming gig inspired by Lynda's own writer's journey and interests.
Originally published by Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing, the series was taken over by its author in 2014, through Reality Skimming Press (2014-2017).
Williams taught applied computing at the University of Northern B.C. for 15 years, where she headed the Center for Teaching and Learning, and ran a web development lab for producing online courses. Since 2012 she has been Learning Technology Analyst and Manager at the Teaching and Learning Centre of Simon Fraser University, in Burnaby, B.C. She also teaches introductory web design, part-time, at BCIT.
She was founder and producer of the online journal Reflections on Water, which ran for ten years ending in 2007.
THRONE PRICE is part of the OKAL REL saga, set in a far future where Earth has dropped from history into legend. It tells a story of the struggle between two galactic civilizations: the Reetions, democratic technocrats; and the bio-engineered Sevolites, whose feudal society’s hierarchy is based on genetics. Two hundred years before the story’s setting, a genocidal war resulted in a treaty of strict separation; 18 years earlier, the Sevolites attempted an invasion of the Reetion capital, but were defeated. As the story opens, another invasion is being planned. The protagonist, Erien, is a teenager of mixed Reetion-Sevolite heritage serving in the Sevolite space fleet, raised in both cultures, opposed to the invasion, and ill-equipped to make his way in the savage Sevolite culture, where every argument leads to a duel. As the story develops, Erien finds himself the center of a political conspiracy, and must solve the mystery of his origins to survive. THRONE PRICE is space opera, set in a violent, unpleasant future. It is a not terribly well-written version of the hero’s journey, with mature content.
