This novel is atmospheric and a great mystery. It doesn’t go where you necessarily think it will. I’d say this would appeal to upper MG and lower YA readers, who enjoy a bit of horror and a lot of creepiness. This would be excellent as a young readers first gothic story. The ending felt slightly rushed but didn’t take away from the story.

ARC for review. To be published December 1, 2023

Moon Rains, age 13, got a terrible cold. And then it got worse. Unfortunately for Moon, Moon’s mother doesn’t believe in doctors or Western medicine and attempts to treat her through faith healing and holistic medicine fail miserably. Before Moon can fill a secret prescription for an antibiotic for her horrible sinus infection her mother meets Evelyn Larsen in a waiting room and Evelyn tells her there might be a place for Moon at Clearlake, a private, natural, world-renowned facility. For free.

Moon’s mom bites.

The next day the two are traveling to Shetland Island in Scotland. An old woman on the train tells Moon she’s in danger, not to go into room 217 and a bunch of other stuff that sounds not so promising. Then they arrive and it all gets worse. Moon’s roommate doesn’t know how long she’s been there nor does she know what happened to some of the other patients. And then it continues to get worse.

Fair-to-middling story. I think it’s meant to be YA, and if so it’s OK. If not, it’s trouble.

I was kindly given a chance to read Clearlake for a Book Tour and also via Netgalley. This review is my honest thought and opinions based on the book. I will try and keep it as spoiler free as possible.

“I’ll snap you like gingerbread. One finger at a time. Snap, snap, snap.”

Clearlake isn't all that it seems to be. A huge monstrous building on a hill, on a secluded island; soon it will be the prison which will hold or main character and many other children.

Unfortunately for our main character Moon, fate was not on her side when she was birthed the night of the full Moon to her very eccentric mother, Ms. Raines in the bathtub of their flat. Her mother is one of those types of parents who believe Western medicine is fooey and that childhood board games like Monopoly are just a bunch of propaganda. You could say the woman is slightly mad.

Moon's unlucky destination happens on the chance she is ill. Upon exhausting all sorts of cures (except the Vicks; any Latin raised reader will understand my joke. Happened to me too.) She is taken away by her mother to this hospital on the hill. Where the staff are a bit off and odd things happen. The whole place is filled with children caught between growing up and being a child. the majority are orphans and the ones with cuckoo parents like Moon's. Every once I awhile a child is called to a room....and they never return....

Moon and her band of resistance fighters work together to try and unravel the secrets of the dark labyrinth, which Clearlake housed within its weathered walls. Will she and the rest of the lost boys and girls find the truth of the strange happenings before it's too late?

Clearlake was a quick short read. I finished it in a couple of hours. I found myself wanting to find out what the dark portrait lined halls of Clearlake echoed within the whisper of night. It is a YA horror thriller, I would say more towards the lower YA age demographic even into middle grade. It's not creepy enough for me, but I know it would be for the targeted demographic. I liked most of the characters except a handful, all the adults but one.. the plot twist with the one was so sad... As I read, I definitely had Roald Dahl Witches vibes mixed with this movie I saw on like netflix where they had all these girls in this buding from tiny kids to early teens before they would vanish. I felt like perhaps these two things may have been inspiration but I am unsure, though here I was thinking I was Sherlock Holmes and I couldn't have been more wrong, when the truth dropped, I was so surprised in a good way! Very clever!

The only thing I wished there was more of was a bit more to the ending. It was a good ending, but I had questions. I wanted to know what happened to all the kids and especially to the main group and to June. Was Lars telling the truth?

If you have a child between 8-14, I think they would definitely enjoy the book, or if you enjoy lower YA to Middle Grade stories and like spooky reads, this one is for you!

"Clearlake," by Stanislava Buevich.

A dark, spooky YA fantasy that was a delight to read! It had great elements and I enjoyed the darker academia vibe to it. Sometimes it is nice to delve into fiction that's younger and I enjoyed how simple this story was and how each character was impactful to the story!

The story features a thirteen-year-old named Moon Rains. She battles a relentless and mysterious illness and in a desperate quest for a cure, her mother takes her to the isolated Clearlake Institute on a remote Scottish island. It's a place rumoured to hold innovative treatments but one by one things start to not add up. It starts with their train journey to Clearlake, Moon and her mother encounter a cryptic woman who delivers a chilling warning. As Moon arrives at Clearlake, she discovers a place cloaked in secrets and shadows and kids are being picked one by one. Darkened halls are prowled by ghastly old witches, eerie eyes watch their every move, and children endure harrowing procedures. With the help of newfound friends a revolution begins. One room, in particular, hides an unspeakable children who enter it, vanish without a trace. Haunted by the enigmatic woman's “Do not go into Room 217,” Moon and her friends race against time to escape Clearlake's sinister grasp. Will they make it out before it's too late? Find out by reading more. I rated this one ⭐⭐⭐⭐.

Maybe all along I thought I wasn’t a scary vibes kinda gal but in reality I just needed to find the right thing. Clearlake is the perfect mix of spooky and bone-chilling moments paired with a “gotta figure it out” detective cast of characters that just captivate you. While this is YA and leaned towards the younger end of it, I honestly could’ve placed these characters as older- which says to me it has such a range for audiences.

I had no idea where this was going to go and loved the path that Buevich took us down. We jump almost immediately into the grit and glory of the story with a fast flow of drama and characters introduced. Moon is such a fun character to watch the story unfold with, she’s got determination and curiosity and wit.

Readers are gifted with an ending that wraps everything neatly in a bow but what I love is the opportunity that is left to offer another book or even novella of how Clearlake comes to be. I’d find the backstory and beginnings fascinating.

This cover grabbed me and I knew I had to read it. The story pulled me right in and held on. Rain gets sick with something that her mom is unable to heal with homeopathic efforts. She meets a lady in purple saying she can help. She tells them of this institute with people there dedicated to helping children with illnesses without the use of modern medicine. When they arrive, Rain and her mom are separated. Things are not what they seem. I did not want to put this book down. I loved the relationship between Rain and her mom. All of the children in the institute were such great characters with all different personalities. I loved this book. If you love horror, you should check this one out. For readers around 10 and up. The book starts off describing a daughter and mother relationship based around the mother’s new age type thoughts on medical care, a no Doctors or medicine attitude. Unless it’s natural remedies, possibly given by a guru. But that brings a false impression of what is to come in the book as a whole. Which is a gentle horror, with a creepy fairy tale feel. To cure an infection, Moon Rain becomes trapped with adults who really don’t have her best interests at heart. I’m glad most Scottish Islands don’t have such creepy custodians. But they do make for a fun read. Thank you to Stanislava Buevich and BookSirens for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.

Thank you to Booksirens for a copy of the book. Clearlake is on the darker side of Middle Grade. If you loved The Clackity and The Small Spaces Series then pick up this book. The difference with this book it’s has a mystery that could possible happen in real life and it’s also an isolated setting which makes the book more chilling. I absolutely loved the description of the place and the creative of it. The ending felt rushed and the beginning start off a little slow.

Clearlake is a fantastic children's-young teen's horror. I was hooked from the first page.
My heart absolutely broke for Moon. She's a clever child, just trying to make her way through life with a crack-pot mom who refuses to use medicine (but will send her daughter to a remote research institution if they promise to cure her using beads or whatever). The book is sympathetic to 'Mom' but personally I cannot stand this kind of parent
The Clearlake institute is a terrifying concept (adult or child), partly because the initial premise is not as fantastical as it appears. Clearlake targets neglected, abandoned or orphaned children, sending Evelyn to scout for vulnerable parents and their children.

and it only gets worse once they get to the island...

I really enjoyed Clearlake and cannot wait to see more from this author.

Excellent job by Buevich by creating just the right amount of dread and terror mixed with intriguing characters that make your head spin (because you're curious as to what they'll do next!) Loved Moon as the protagonist - a sensible and brave soul with a true authentic voice.

This is a Young Adult horror, so expect creepy, tense intrigue and a bit of gore.

Moon Rains is a sick girl with a mum who shuns modern medicine, so she ends up at an alternative institution on a Shetland island. The nurses have an unpleasant bedside manner and doctors are a bit manic, all is not well.

Moon let’s the story unfold as she makes friends and tries to work out what exactly is going on. Thoroughly engaging and enjoyable.

I was an ARC reader and I am pleased I chose it.

I really enjoyed this book, it was well written and at times actually a bit spooky! It was a lovely change of pace from some of the other books I've got on the go atm and was a delight to experience. This is a "middle grade" book and so I'd reccommend it to anyone aged 8-14 who's trying to break into reading for pleasure, or even anyone looking to get into the mystery/thriller genre

Moon Rains, a thirteen-year-old girl who is sick with a mysterious illness, is sent to Clearlake Institute by her medical fearing mother. With a mysterious message from a woman on the train, and odd happenings at the institute Moon is unsure if Clearlake institute is what it is supposed to be.

“Clearlake” by Stanislava Buevich is a fantasy book for teens and middle schoolers. I liked how it is realistic on how a thirteen-year-old would see her mother not listening to her as ridiculous and how she thinks she knows best despite her age. She is actually very intuitive and smart for her age but also struggles with the lack of options as a thirteen-year-old. I liked her and her friends. I thought it was a very book and would be interesting for teenagers. 4 out of 5 stars.

Very rarely, a book catches you completely by surprise as it draws you in a web of mystery and suspense. Clearlake is one such book. What starts a youthful and amusing drama soon become a dark and suspenseful tale that keeps you guessing.

The story revolves around a teenager, uniquely named Moon Rains. Suffering from.colds, her mother refusal to trust the modern medicine keeps making her health problem acute. In a last ditched attempt, her mother takes her to the Clearlake Institute on a small isolate island, to cure her. Seperated from her mother now, Moon begins to notice that odd things are going on the institute. Moon and the other teen patients in the institute; Peter, June, Rob, Curly and others, begin to investigate the strange happenings including the disappearance of kids. Will they unlock this mystery before it's too late?

Right from the start, the story grabs you with the unique story of a girl and her peculiar mother. The story quickly gets darker as the story moves to the mysterious Clearlake Institute. The atmospheric setting and the horror vibe truly brings the island alive. From the creepy staff to the bizzare events, everything gradually builds up tension and keeps you the edge. The story is a perfect blend of YA, mystery and horror. The mystery unfolds slowly with many twists towards a satisfying climax.

The characters are well crafted with each of Moon, Peter, Rob and even the doctors and nurses have their own unique characters. The writing is amazing; immediately transporting you to a frightening ambience and the frightful characters. I loved how the quest for truth and freedom motivates the kids to overcome tremendous odds.

Overall 'Clearlake' is an excellent mystery that will keep you engrossed. The unique plot, the the atmospheric setting and the excellent writing, makes it an unputdownable read.

Title : Clearlake
Author : Stanislava Buevich

Within the dark and forbidding walls of Clearlake Institute, Stanislava Buevich's Clearlake is a terrifying and intriguing mystery. A compelling story full of suspense and mystery is created by Moon's trek into this eerily beautiful but eerie location. Through the dark hallways of the institute, the author deftly creates an evocative scene that keeps readers on the edge of their seats as they uncover layers upon layers of secrets.

The colorful group of people adds depth and emotion to the narrative, particularly as Moon and her friends work through the riddles of the institute. Readers will be able to identify with and root for them throughout the novel as they are determined to find the truth.

Because of her bravery, resiliency, and will in the face of hardship, Moon is my favorite character. Her fascinating protagonistism stems from her embodiment of strength and curiosity, which propels the story forward.

Suspense, mystery, and a hint of the paranormal are all expertly woven into the story to keep readers interested from beginning to conclusion. The plot is kept interesting by the pacing, which has surprising turns that make you want to flip the pages.

I wholeheartedly endorse Clearlake to anyone looking for a suspenseful mystery with an eerie feel and a cast of characters that will stick with them long after they've put the book down. This exciting journey explores the depths of secrets and the resiliency of the human spirit.

Stanislava Buevich's "Clearlake" captivates readers from the beginning. A beautiful depiction of love and disagreement is provided by the intricate relationship between 13-year-old Moon Rains and her mother. Their genuine affection and fond memories shine through despite their differences. One of the book's most notable features is the characters within the institution.

As a result of the author's ability to create such well-defined characters, the book is able to provide a rich plot in which each child is given unique and memorable characteristics. This book really surprised me in a good way! Clearlake is like a spooky old mansion that had a baby with a detective story. The book is amazing.

The main character Moon is sick and gets sent to Clearlake Island Hospital for a "miracle cure. But the place gives off bad vibes from the start. It's dark, the doctors are weird, and the nurses would scare Cruella de Vil. Very unsettling!

In the hospital, kids go into Room 217 but don't come back out. Moon isn't going to put up with that, so she teams up with some brave patients to investigate. They find big secrets, each one stranger and scarier than the last. I couldn't stop reading!

The book isn't just scary - it's also about Moon and her friends. They work as a great team even though they're scared. Their friendship and humor reminds me of Scooby Doo. But these kids know not to trust anyone, even a talking parrot.

If you want a book that will keep you guessing, make you jump and cheer for the kids, Clearlake is for you. Just maybe read it during the day with all the lights on! Don't blame me if you have trouble sleeping.

You know, it's been a while since I've read a dark YA fantasy/horror book, and this one did not disappoint. This story was atmospheric, thoughtful, and inspiring. Something that YA novels often do so well is reminding the reader that compassion, tenacity, and the belief in oneself are essential for growth and overcoming negativity/evil.

Though you are following a 13 year-old-girl in this novel, I truly believe that readers of many ages can appreciate and enjoy this story. It isn't too juvenile, nor is it too mature.

As I was reading Clearlake, I was trying to think of another story to compare it to. I simply couldn't come up with anything that 100% fit the bill. However, I will say that it made me nostalgic for Harry Potter, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Wayward Children.

I noticed at the end of the book, the author mentioned that several readers have suggested an epilogue. I 100% agree. I'd love just a little more information about what happens next. If that interests you, you can go to the author's website and sign up for emails so you're notified when the epilogue is finished. https://www.stacywritesbooks.com/

“‘Time is a funny thing. It binds itself to the people who inhabit it. It coagulates, it becomes viscous. Really, it is an illusion,’”

This was such a good, unique story! The vibes were very Series of Unfortunate Events with some truly terrifying and supernatural additions.

It took me a few chapters to get into it, but once we get to the Clearlake Institute, it’s hard to put down. The descriptions of the building were truly enthralling to me—I am so obsessed with the “red room.” I honestly think this could have been longer as well with more details and explanation.

A great mood read and good for readers looking for gothic vibes and kids fighting the power.

As for critiques, the book is a little hard to categorize because it’s about younger kids and the writing is somewhat simple, but it also deals with some really difficult and scary material. There were also some editorial errors that were a little distracting.
