John Kilpatrick, Pastor of Brownsville Assembly of God in Pensacola Florida in the 1990’s, presided over the Revival known as the Father’s Day outpouring, along with evangelist Steve Hill and worship leader Lindell Cooley.

I have followed this revival over the years through YouTube clips and especially have been touched by the baptism videos online. (Just google Brownsville Revival Baptisms). I am forever grateful that they had the foresight to film much of the revival, including the first night when “Mercy Seat” was sung by a young teenager, along with many fiery testimonies and incredible baptisms where the spirit of God knocked many unconscious in the water!

John Kilpatrick wrote this book 5 months into the revival, having no idea it would last for the next 5 years. He begins the book by going back into his rough childhood where his philandering father left his mother destitute and broke. These were desperate times for John and he fell into a deep anxiety/depression wanting to give up on life. His mother had to put him on nerve pills just for him to function. God intervened however, through John’s half-sister’s father in law who was a pastor, Brother Wetzel, who took young “Alton” (John) under his wing and taught him to pray and wait on the Lord. Incredibly he prayed every night with Brother Wetzel and other men in the church for 2 years straight! He along with 17 others saw angels enter the sanctuary one prayer night. That experience taught John Kilpatrick that the supernatural realm was very real and prayer plays a part in ushering it into the natural realm. Brother Wetzel made a life long impact on John and fostered in him a patient reverence through the sanctity of prayer that was foundational to this revival. He details the prayer flag stations that he made for his church and how they ushered in this revival bathed in prayer for two years prior to the mighty outpouring. Also of note was his wife Brenda’s spiritual awakening through visiting a revival in Canada around this time which created a deep hunger for more of God in John.

All of my questions were answered in this book about the revival. He covers how it began, what led up to it, how it proceeded, how to distinguish between moves of the flesh vs moves of the spirit, and ended the book with principles for revival including: persistent prayer, building a proper foundation, expecting God to move, yielding to his Spirit, learning to pastor the outpouring, and continuing to pray for the harvest.

If only the church could go back to the foundations that were laid during this revival (and many other revivals of the past) and put away this “seeker friendly” model that has quenched the move of the Holy Spirit so we can have a Feast of Fire once again.

There is something about spiritual hunger, a God-centered life and the narrative of revival that stirs faith in my heart like few other things can. Read this book for a Red hot injection of faith and zeal. Your prayers will improve and your ability to believe for more will certainly increase.

This book is testimony from the Brownsville Revival as told by the host church’s pastor. The author provides backstory that leads up to the main event.

As a testimony, the book was good. I always enjoy an interesting story. This may be a good choice for those intrigued by church history.

On June 18, 1995 John Kilpatrick does not want to be at Brownsville Assembly of God for worship, even though he is the pastor. His mother has recently died and several members of the congregation are angry with changes the church has made. But the biggest change of all for the Assembly is soon to come. God’s Spirit falls in such a way that Father's Day that hundreds of thousands visit Brownsville in the next five years to taste of his power. Today ministers such as David W. Edwards, Brian Guerin, Eric W. Gilmour and Daniel Kolenda all trace their beginnings to this Revival. The story goes to show that when we are obedient to God, he chooses when to add to our efforts (often unexpectedly) the strong winds of change.
