The Rosewood Penny

Rate this book
The dragons of Yuro have been hunted to extinction.

On a small, isolated island, in a reclusive forest, lives bandit leader Marani and her brother Jacks. With their outlaw band they rob from the rich to feed themselves, raiding carriages and dodging the occasional vindictive pegasus. Thanks to Marani’s mysterious invulnerability, this mostly works out well…until Marani and her quirky band of outlaws plunder the carriage of the very bossy princess Nuria.

The princess’s carriage contains not just gold, but a dragonscale comb that belonged to Marani’s murdered mother. Worse yet, Princess Nuria seems to know exactly who Marani is, maybe more than Marani herself.

Marani hatches a plan to retrieve her mother’s comb, seduce the princess, and make her entire bandit crew rich in the process. But island politics and the island of Yuro itself have other things in mind. Marani and Jacks quickly find themselves caught between warring monarchies, trade disputes, feral pegasi, and a very old, very concerning family lineage—all bound within an old penny, a mouthy princess, and a stolen comb.

New to this author - the book cover and Robin Hood/Sherwood Forest storyline appealed so I jumped in.
The lead characters Princess Nuria and Marani/Grey are easily pictured. The former written as arrogant and secretive while the latter is a womanizing, sometimes hapless highway robber and leader of the Highway Guild. Fields' descriptions are clear and the book's start humorous - berries as ammunition? A botched robbery is the beginning of the interaction between Grey and the Princess and brings a host of questions. What to make of the dragon scale comb? I loved the strong family unit presented in Grey and her brother Jacks - the reasons behind her protecting him. A world with flying horses, dragons, royal families and suppressed magic. Trade deals, intrigue, treachery, angst, Visions, secrets personal and sad and slow romance pulled me to a fitting end. A sequel would be great to build on the horse breeding aspect, trade pacts and romance but that's my hope......
I look forward to future books from the author.

If there’s one thing you should expect when reading a book by J.S. Fields, it’s the unexpected. Fields comes up with the quirkiest ideas, whether they write sci-fi or fantasy.

Imagine an island where dragons and unicorns used to roam freely now divided between four monarchies and, in the middle, a forest and caves where a guild of highway robbers live pretty much in peace. A leader with impenetrable skin, her brother with highly sensitive skin, a princess with visions, horses with half-formed wings… Mix all these ingredients and you’ll get a riotous enemies to lovers romance full of surprises and banter.

It took me a few pages to get orientated in the world Fields came up with. Just as I was getting acclimated, they’d throw in a detail that made me question what I thought I’d understood. I quite enjoyed the feeling, but it means it was a slow start for me. Once I got in, however, I was all in. I also appreciated the fact that the MCs are full-blown adults (they’re 43 and 37), with actual life experience combined with the remaining ability to make the worst decisions.

The Rosewood Penny is many things at once: it’s cosy fantasy, it’s a romance, it’s fun, it’s emotional, it’s hot and tender.

This book took me a bit to really get into. There was a lot of uniqueness to the world that had to be established first, and the first quarter or so of the book kind of suffered for it. I also really didn't like most of the characters in the beginning of the book. Jacks comes off kind of whiny and pushy, Javad and Liu come off as petulant and argumentative for the sake of it. If you can pull yourself through past the 25% mark it finally grabs your attention, and characters begin to become more bearable. Everything about the world is unique and just when you think you have a handle on it, Fields throughs another detail in there to turn the world upside down. I did not suspect Mirani's background at all, and like her was cautious about the explanation given. The end of the book gets pretty chaotic pretty fast, with lots of threads untangling all at once. By the end of the book some of those have been neatly tied off...but there are still so many questions that need to be answered, setting up for at least a sequel if not a series.

The romance of the book was fun. It was great to see an older MC (43) and love interest (37). So many of these types of stories revolve around people barely out of childhood, or even still teenagers. It was also cool to see Nuria and Mirani kind of exchanging back and forth being the aggressor in the relationship at different points in the book.

There is no third act breakup. There is a small separation near the end of the book, but it is quickly resolved. A lot of things could have been resolved or avoided if Nuria treated Mirani more like an equal though and fully explained her actions and reasoning instead of trying to dictate what she thought was best.

This was a well written fantasy! Intriguing from the get go. Told in one MCs pov, who doesn’t know what’s going on so we don’t know either, there are many hints throughout and it is very satisfying when the picture becomes clear! There is a lovely sapphic romance along with the knives and swords and magic! There is so much more to this story, hopefully there will be a sequel! The world building of places but people as well, these MCs learning more about themselves and each other, growing more in their relationships. If you are into fantasy, definitely give this a read!

Epic fantasy adventure!

It took me a little while to get into this epic fantasy adventure but once I did I was hooked. You’re not given much back story but just immediately thrust into a fantasy world in which dragons and unicorns used to exist but have been hunted (by humans) to extinction. Still alive and thriving however are pegasi (who are huge); some wild and some tamed. The marauding feral pegasi are mean and scary. They roam the skies and regularly attack (and kill) people.
In this world Marani has become a highwayman of sorts, robbing the rich to provide medicine for her, not so little anymore, brother Jacks. They live in the forest and work with a band of similar vagabonds - it’s all rather Robin Hood, but with a harsher edge. Marani and Jacks are unusual in that Marani has unbreakable skin and is impervious to poison whilst Jacks is the opposite, being susceptible to every ailment and liable to break out in blisters if his skin is exposed to certain materials or too much sunlight.
When Marani and Jacks hold up a carriage carrying the Royal Princess, Nuria, heir to her mother’s Queendom, a wholly unexpected series of events are set in motion. I’m not going to say more about the plot, all I would say is stick with this as it really picks up from about 25% (in the Kindle version) onwards.
The ending of this is relatively satisfying but it leaves a number of things very open for there to be a potential sequel. I’d certainly be happy to return to this fantasy world to find out more in the future!

This book has all the elements I like: interesting fantasy worldbuilding, lesbians, romance, a decent amount of spice--but it didn't quite click for me as I had hoped.

To be clear, this is a solid entry in the genre and a lot of people are going to eat it up: a slow-burn enemies to lovers sapphic fantasy romance with good prose and memorable characters. I really think this is a me thing; the pace fell off a bit toward the middle for me, both in terms of the fantasy plot and the romance plot, and though I enjoyed it enough to finish, I never quite got fully back into the story. Maybe I didn't feel the chemistry the way I'd have liked, maybe there was too much court intrigue, I'm not sure.

What I liked the most was the worldbuilding, specifically the pegasus aspect. There are pegasi on the island, but they're dangerous and impossible to control, and hard to breed, leading to wild horses everywhere, many with partial wings, nubs, etc. And most folks wear cheap horse skin boots, etc. That all felt real to me, the kind of thing you don't see everywhere. And the characters were a strength as well: clearly distinct and interesting, with a nice slow reveal of the magical powers of some of them.

If you're looking for a steamy sapphic fantasy romance with a classic feel that with some interesting worldbuilding, definitely give this one a shot!

Robbing a princesses carriage should be straightforward, but when said princess Nurai seems to know who Marani is, and has a comb that belonged to her mother, things start to get a little complicated for the bandit leader. Or a lot.

Princesses, bandits, pegasus, dragons, there's a lot to love in this book, and that I very much did. Things start of simple but quickly get complex as Marani finds herself involved in a lot more than she'd thought, especially when feelings start to surface. Things aren't as peaceful between the four kingdoms of the island, and being stuck in the middle of it all was never going to be easy. Add in to that mix Marani's love for her brother as she tries to keep him safe and well, and you have the recipe for a wonderful story.

I really enjoyed this story, especially the unexpected plot twists that came along, taking the story places that I didn't expect but that I really like. The story is fast paced and well written, the romance sweet. The world building is done well, the cast of characters varied an interesting, though the main focus is on Marani, Nurai and Jacks. The book concludes well enough, though it screams out for a sequel, given that some plot elements are left wide open. If one is released, I'll eagerly read it.

Another great fantasy from the Space Wizard world. This tale of bandits and princesses, pegasi and dragons with FF romance stars Grey (real name Marani) a highwayman who establishes a Highway Guild almost like a Robin Hood theme. However Grey cares for her brother Jacks who has severe ridiculous-really allergies (almost like he is the boy in a bubble) and her desperation leads her to a higher destiny. A fascinating plot twist about Grey and her brother Jacks and a mystery to solve on who trying to kill the royals? I like that she is 43 and her brother is in his mid-30s. I like the entire synopsis even though the beginning is heavy on Grey’s sexuality preference. We even find out the significance of the Rosewood Penny title and its role in the story. Once we get into the meat of the story, that is when magic happens. I received a complimentary copy from the author to voluntarily leave an honest review.

This sapphic fantasy is a great novel if you love enemies to lovers, grumpy vs sunshine, family secrets, death plot investigations, and spicy scenes, then this book is for you.

I loved the plot, the twists and turns that came along the way, and the love Grey had for her brother to keep him safe at all costs. I loved how she handled situations and was known to be a ladies' woman, but when she met Princess Nuria, she chose not to engage with anyone else, even though she quite doesn't know why yet.

I loved that the characters were over 30, with Grey being 43. Most fantasies have younger main characters so this was refreshing to see.

It was a great story, and I hope this is part of a series because I want to know what happens next.

Her plan is complicated, but she is desperate to get some answers. Our second heroine might have those answers, but she is not exactly forthcoming. Things are going to be rather complicated from here on.

This is swords and sorcery fantasy story involving a rather interesting mix of elements in addition to a FF romance. The story is well written and easy to read with a rather unique setting that was fun to explore. The characters are well done and have a nice depth to them, including plenty of secrets. And our plot revolves around those secrets, providing plenty of mystery. Things move at a quick pace and there is never a dull moment around here. Overall, it made for a very enjoyable and very engaging story. I look forward to more from this author.

Highly recommended.

Haven't Enjoyed A Book This Much in A While!

Every once in a while you give a Kindle Unlimited book a try and find a rare gem. This is one of those books. I've read so much my whole life that normally I can see everything coming. Plot prediction isn't something I can turn off, and sometimes it makes books too bland for me. This one had surprises! Very cool worldbuilding and storyline. For example: the flying horses aren't PRECISELY horses, and they are much larger and more dangerous! They play interesting parts in the plot.

Great characters and relationships - not just romantic ones, but also amongst friends and family. Enough humor to keep things truly entertaining, but with some really beautiful moments. And... If you want spice, there is some nice sapphic smut to keep you happy. Also other LGBTQ+ representation in general.

I almost didn't read the whole book, as it felt like a slow start to me, but before I lost interest, the book had me hooked, and I got enthralled with the magic of their world.

Trying to imagine living with Marani and Nuria and also the rest of the gang from the guild, felt impossible. And the way that Marani got exposed was a sadness on itself. The crosses and double crosses in the kingdoms, could be enough to make anyone frustrated into a flush.

I'm just glad for the way it worked out in the end, and I hope that there will be more to the story. Thank you to the Author for writing such a detailed book.

I only spotted one typographical/spelling error, but there are other issues which caused me to lower my rating. Although primarily a fantasy novel, this story incorporates (in my opinion, entirely unnecessary) explicit details of lesbian behavior and contains a bit of gender confusion. Apparently, the author skipped the science and biology courses while growing up; and thus, is unsure which set of X vs. Y chromosomes he/she inherited. If you (the reader of this review) are also confused, females have two X chromosomes while males have only one. Further, the X is five times as large as the Y, meaning it carries more strands of genetic coding and is also susceptible to more things that can go wrong (e.g., diseases).

Absolutely gorgeous book, one that I'd buy physical copies of in a heartbeat and that I'd beg for a sequel for.

WLW romantasy is a rarity, even more so if the MCs aren't below 25, so I went into this book giddy and ready.

I was more than delighted.

First person perspective and an easy read. Chapters are nicely sized and the characters are varied and loveable all in their unique ways. The plot had me guessing up till the last chapters and on the edge of my seat at multiple points!

There were a few points I'd loved to have expanded on, but that only makes me want to read a sequel more. Even if no sequel comes, this book stands as one of my favorites of the year!

Let me just say that it had me at pegasi and then come to find out there’s DRAGONS?? I had a great time. It started out heavy with Marani’s sexual preferences and it being referred to so much almost made it come across as heavy handed but as soon as I got to 30%, I finished the book in 2 days. I had so much fun reading this, and I fell in love with the world and Jacks (can I please have a book with him as the main character???). I loved the chemistry between Nuria and Marani. I’m a huge fan of banter and I giggled like a child so many times that I lost count.

I highly, highly recommend if you’re looking for a fast, fun read.

Dragons, Pegasi, danger, romance, humor… This novel had so many unexpected twists and turns! I loved it. The story starts with the main character, Marani robbing a carriage. She doesn’t know the woman in it, other than she’s a noble, but the woman, Nuria, knows her name and has Marani’s mother’s comb. This mystery just intrigues Marani more, while also infuriating her that the Nuria won’t hand over the comb.

Thus starts the beginning of a fun, often surprising story with magical creatures, some of which are extinct, and several puzzling events. I couldn’t put this book down. Although the conclusion is satisfying, it leaves some unanswered questions, and I really hope there will be a sequel.

This was a lovely story in a unique world. Because the main character starts with very little information, there’s a lot that’s parceled out over the course of the book, which can sometimes be a little frustrating, but also kept me reading until some of these secrets and mysteries were unraveled. The characters were all well done, from Gray and Nuria to Jacks and Javad and Liu. There were several twists, which all worked well enough.

My one gripe is that there are too many loose ends at the end… too many books unread and too many mysteries left unresolved. If there ends up not being a sequel, I’d be inclined to lower my rating. I’m really hoping there is more to this story, though, because I’d much rather read about those things than complain about them. :)

I was given this book complimentary from Book Sirens in e-book form in return for my honest review. Everything stated in this review is of my own opinion and I was not compensated monetarily for providing this review.
From a stuttering start this novel develops into a good read. The romance is good although there is a little hint of insta-love.
By the comments at the end and a quick look at the listings it seems that the author is more used to writing serious Sapphic science fantasy but this book shows the author writes a pretty good Sapphic romance too.

Fast-paced and action-packed, this sweet-and-spicy, slow-burn Sapphic romance is a quick and breezy read. Characterization is superb; Grey/Marani is quite the character, and even the side characters are memorable. The plot has some nice twists, the world-building is fun, and I particularly enjoyed the banter. While I don’t usually like modern elements or a lot of spice within high fantasy, this story is so well-written and the characters so engaging that I was still able to enjoy the read. Nicely done.

Fun romantasy with a mystery and a splash of political intrigue. The main characters are easy to root for. The villian is easy to figure out, but that doesn't take way from the enjoyment of the novel. The last few chapters feel a bit like the plot was being reined in, to quickly wrap up the story. Several items, actions, and events left more questions (the clock, MC & bro origins, true identity of a third party) than resolutions. It feels like these questions could form a sturdy foundation for a sequel. I would absolutely read another adventure with Grey and Nuria.

*I got this book for free, but this is my opinion.*
Thys was a good read. Fantasy, dragons, and romance. It's a good mix.
The story did start slowly, but I was pulled in quickly. The characters were colourful and interesting. It's easy to relate to them. The plot was amazing. It was full of twists, unexpected events, and a strong mystery to boot. I'd have no problem reading this author's next book.

I absolutely loved this book. The storyline was quite interesting, the story well-written in a way that drew me in. I was able to connect with the main characters, Marani's journey and her emotions becoming my own. I like that I didn't see some of the plot twists coming. I need more of this story and can't wait for what the author has in store for us next.

I really liked the premise of this book and maybe it would have worked out if I could finish it but I was not able to get into the story. I couldn't follow along with the setting descriptions or what was happening with the characters, particularly the first MC we meet. It did not draw me in, instead frustrated me. I have a lot of books to read this year and decided not to continue with this one. DNF at 13%. I will not rate it.

I love reading romance-focused books with older main characters, and so Marani (43) and her 37 year old love interest, Princess Nuria, were a hit with me. It had a quirky, original style to it and main characters that stood out. I would have liked to have understood a bit more about how the world worked but it was a good fantasy romance, and left me wondering whether there'd be a sequel to wrap some of the loose ends.
