5⭐️ This is a high stakes fantasy romance which starts fast and furious in chapter one and never lets up until the very end. Our main character Artura, is snarky, sassy, bold and often stupidly brave, but boy is she loyal. Get ready to be emotionally traumatised, in all the good bookish ways!
Artura lives a quiet life hidden away in a small town with her carer Emrys as she learns the healing arts and finds moments to be with her best friend/lover Soraya. Here, the rath of King Helmar only minimally affects them, if you can call the accepted mistreatment of women, the limited food and resources and the hunting of witches without reason to be minimal.
As a healer, Emrys lives on the edge of acceptance as King Helmar is out to eradicate his world of anything that he deems powerful, as only he should have the power. Despite needing to remain unnoticed, Artura can't help but stand up for herself and others any time she sees an injustice, leading to her being accused of Witchcraft and sent to the palace to face King Helmar.
We quickly learn that King Helmar is the epic villain, revelling in the pain of others as he prides himself in creative ways to torture his victims. With no one to stop him, Artura suffers his full attention for months, until his most creative form of torture leads to the King marrying her off to the King of another land. One who he believes to be just as cruel as he.
But this King turns out to be someone very different, and Artura begins a new life as she learns more about herself, her heritage and who she wants to be in this new relationship.
I loved everything about this book, although the on-page torture and rape was particularly hard to read.
I found myself connecting to Artura immediately which made me completely invested in her journey. It was this that kept me reading well into the night and at times when I should have been doing other things! I needed to know that all the trauma she endures throughout the story would eventually lead to some form of happiness.
The romance was definitely the light within the dark, as King Thorn was our perfect bookish boyfriend. I particularly loved the way that he supported Artura to find her inner power, encouraging her to keep investing in herself as they began to form a plan to make this world better.
I highly recommend this book which felt much like a combination of the vibes of Kingdom of Ash and Heir of Fire from the Throne of Glass Series.
Queer rep: Bisexual Female Main Character
Trigger warning: On-page Torture, Rape and Murder
