Selected by the Ottoman ruler's military guard, Sinan left his small village in Anatolia to become an established soldier and renowned engineer. Once his work caught the eye of Suleiman the Magnificent, he became the sultan's chief architect. In this position, Sinan is said to have designed more than five hundred structures that transformed the face of the Ottoman empire and, more specifically, Istanbul.
