When a revered sports legend falls victim to a brutal home invasion, a nation is shaken to its core. Outrage swells and the press and powers that be demand answers.
DCI Evan Warlow, fresh from a well-earned vacation, is thrown into the cauldron to lead the investigation. But the victim, despite his iconic status, has secrets of his own.
Amidst the chaos of jealousy and rivalry that swirls around the case, a darker underbelly emerges. The pursuit of truth transforms into a gripping hunt, but whose truth is the team hunting?
Something else lurks in the labyrinth of deception. Something vile and twisted that could strike again at any moment... unless it’s found.
Another fast paced, gripping, police procedural that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.

Rhys Dylan lives on the edge of the Black mountains of Wales with his wife and a dog who doesn't like the rain.
Though he has written books for children and adults under different pen names in other genres, the Black Beacons Murder Mystery series sees him return to crime and his love of Celtic noir and dark humour.
He hopes readers will find a brief escape from a very troubled world inside the stories. He does not expect to get rich as an author, but as someone once famously said, money can't buy you love, but it can get you some great chocolate digestives.
The members of the police team in Wales are all wonderfully fleshed out in this series and each book updates the reader on their personal lives and skills as detectives. Warlow continues to be a sage and sarcastic leader of the team and in this book his instincts eventually lead him in the right direction. There are many potential suspects in this high-profile murder of a national ex-rugby player and the ending came as a surprise. As always, there is a good mix of forensics, modern policing and old-fashioned interviewing and puzzle-solving. I love all the books in the series. How would British police solve crimes without tea and biscuits though!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 5-Star Review of Light Remains by Rhys Dylan
Rhys Dylan once again delivers a riveting, emotionally layered masterpiece in Light Remains, the latest installment in the DCI Evan Warlow series. Set against the hauntingly atmospheric backdrop of mid-Wales, this novel is both a chilling police procedural and a deeply human story that lingers long after the final page.
DCI Warlow is at his finest—sharp, intuitive, and increasingly complex. In Light Remains, he’s faced with a deeply disturbing case that begins with the discovery of a body staged with unsettling precision, hinting at a killer with a message—and a history. As Warlow and his team unravel the chilling threads of the investigation, secrets emerge that reach far into the past, connecting grief, obsession, and a long-buried tragedy.
Dylan’s writing is impeccable, striking a perfect balance between tension and introspection. The plot is tightly woven, with red herrings and slow-burning suspense that keep readers guessing. But what truly elevates this novel is its emotional depth. The title, Light Remains, speaks to the fragile beauty of memory, loss, and hope—and Dylan weaves that theme into every character, every clue, and every twist.
Fans of the series will appreciate the continued development of Warlow and his colleagues—there’s a real sense of growth, camaraderie, and personal stakes. And for newcomers, Light Remains still functions as a gripping standalone, though it will undoubtedly inspire a deep dive into the rest of the series.
A superb crime novel that is as poignant as it is thrilling, Light Remains proves once again that Rhys Dylan is a master storyteller. Highly recommended for anyone who craves intelligent, character-driven crime fiction with heart.
Another smashing read in this series. DCI Evan Warlow and his team of detectives excel again in their hunt for a killer. Each character is well drawn out and brings something extra to the team. Excellent writing as always and who doesn't love Cadi, Warlow's lovable black Labrador? Rhys Dylan brings a certain atmosphere to each story he writes, with beautiful descriptions of the Welsh countryside.
A legendary sporting celebrity is attacked in his own home and brutally assaulted. He sadly does from his injuries later in hospital and the case moves from a burglary handled by CID to a murder investigation for DCI Warlow and his team. There are various tests and turns as the case proceeds. Along the way there are the usual things regular readers may have come to expect from Rhys Dylan in this series: a lot of personal things happening with the team members, loads of gallows humour with lots of terrible puns and a disappearance of someone from a previous case. Recommended
It was great to see that Warlow finally got to visit with his family. When he returned the team fit together like a well oiled machine. The setting is always an extra character in the story and its very nice of the author to work in some pronunciations of some of the Welsh words.
This is a brilliantly well paced story and as ever, I felt like I was back within this close knit family of police officers. There’s plenty of action throughout, with a couple of characters I instantly disliked. There’s some great humour as well, namely a biscuit I used to love but won’t name for the sake of those who remember them and think whatever happened to them? It also references some unfinished business from the previous book which I’m looking forward to finding out what will happen when things come to a head. With quite a few possible suspects, I was kept guessing right until the end. As with the rest of this series, The Light Remains is another gripping story by the awesome pen of Rhys Dylan, and although it could be read as a stand-alone, I would strongly recommend beginning with the first book, The Engine House so you can become part of the Evan Warlow family.
Love this book and the previous ones I read. The author makes you feel like you are there in person with wonderful characters that you feel you would love to know people like them.
The best so far. Some parts made me laugh out loud (it is like a jumble sale in Bedlam being one). The only character I am not keen on is Warlow’s son, Alan. The rest more than make up for him. More please.
I read the first 10 books in a manner reminiscent of dominoes falling. I was sooo glad when no. 11 came out. I devoured it. Now I’m waiting for no. 12. Such a good detective like Evan Warlow, though, is a bit dim when it comes to his personal life. You faithful followers of the Black Beacons Murder Mysteries know of what I speak.
Another great read. The characters are so well written, and bounce off each other, making them very interesting and credible. Brilliant storyline, with a modern -day twist. The description of the areas where the book is set is great, you feel as if you are there. Highly recommended, can't wait for the next book.
Short and sweet review, book 11 of a fantastic series. The author always delivers a great storyline and this was no exception. I usually like to play pretend detective and have a good innings with correct suspects, but this one not a clue till it was literally thrust in my face hahaha.
Kept me guessing until near the end. Brilliant writing and story telling. The characters are like old friends, it's so easy to pick up where you left off with the previous book.
Since my first Evan Warlow book, I’ve been a fan. Well written, plenty of suspense, a fantastic team of detectives, and one great story after another. Rhys Dylan is a must read for British crime fans.
It was a great read and I love all the characters. However, I just cannot get my head around the frenzy about football. There’s so many more things in the world to care about. Still, I will still look forward to Rhys Dylan’s books.
Another great installment to the series. Its wonderful to see how well the police team works together and their care and support for each other. As well as being able to poke fun in the way of true family banter.
The Light Remains by Rhys Dylan is book 11 in the DCI Evan Warlow series. Evan is in Perth Australia with his sons but arrives back home to an investigation into the home invasion and savage attack of Ronnie Probert, a rugby legend. The Roger Hunt case is still ongoing too, as he has gone to ground. However, Roger wants to finish what he started. With the personal issues of some of his team, Evan has a full load when he returns to work. This is such a wonderful series. Because of the characters, and of course Cadi, Evan’s dog, I feel immersed in the story. Family relationships and addictions of various sorts play a part. I loved the ending after all that had happened before. A recommended read.
I'm running out of superlatives to describe this series. We're at book eleven now and the quality shows no sign of abating.
The death of a well known and loved rugby legend after a burglary at his home is the focus for Evan and the team this time, just after Evan returns from a trip to Australia to visit his son and new grandchild. As usual, the plot and writing here is top notch. There are some personal issues for Jess and Rhys to deal with, along with trying to get a handle on the famous Signalman that no-one has seen. Plenty to keep you entertained and I'm only sorry it's finished already.
The Light Remains: A Black Beacons Murder Mystery (DCI Evan Warlow Crime Thriller Book 11)
I cannot express the feelings I get reading the words of Rhys Dylan, the way he has of catching the imagination, I am there in the moment moving with the words. What a wonderful gift to have and to share. Don’t ever give up writing Rhys, the world is a better place with your writing in it. Thank you x
I recently discovered The DCI Evan Warlow series by Rhys Dylan, and I couldn't be happier with this find. I've devoured the first 11 books in rapid succession, much like watching a chain reaction unfold seamlessly one after another. The series is a true page-turner, and each book left me eager for the next.
One of the many aspects I appreciate about Dylan's writing is his thoughtful inclusion of Welsh pronunciations. This small but significant detail not only enriches the reading experience but also helps immerse readers in the authentic Welsh setting. It's a considerate touch that shows Dylan's commitment to authenticity and respect for his culture.
The writing itself is excellent, maintaining a high standard throughout the series. Dylan's narrative style is engaging, and his character development is top-notch. Among the cast, Cadi, Warlow's lovable black Labrador, stands out as a delightful and endearing presence. Who doesn't love a faithful canine companion that adds warmth and charm to the story?
Rhys Dylan has a remarkable talent for creating a vivid atmosphere in each of his books. His descriptions of the Welsh countryside are breathtaking, painting a picture that makes the reader feel as if they are walking alongside the characters through lush landscapes and quaint villages. This beautiful backdrop enhances the story, making the setting almost a character in its own right.
The sense of camaraderie among the police officers in the series adds another layer of depth to the narrative. Dylan portrays a close-knit family of colleagues who support and rely on each other, adding an emotional richness to the procedural aspects of the plot. This dynamic is both heartwarming and realistic, making the reader care deeply about the characters and their fates.
Overall, Rhys Dylan has crafted a compelling series with The DCI Evan Warlow books. The combination of excellent writing, a lovable canine companion, atmospheric settings, and a strong sense of community among the characters makes for a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience. I can't wait to start reading the next book in the series. Rhys needs to write quickly to keep up with my reading as I will be sad to wait too long for more in the series. I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a captivating and well-written mystery series.
Book 11 in the DCI Evan Warlow Series and another great read. Evan is visiting family in Australia when a well know former Rugby player, Ronnie Probert, is attacked and left for dead in his home. When Evan arrives home it is to the news that Probert has died from his injuries so the case is passed to his team as this is now a murder investigation. It’s great to be back with Evan and his team, they work well together and it’s clear the camaraderie goes beyond the workplace. The banter is always great but I think it went up another notch this time - some funny, some to elicit a groan but always entertaining.
Briefly, this isn’t going to be an easy case as there are more than a handful of suspects, some closer to home than others. Alongside the main investigation there are a number of other threads to follow with Jess and Molly having to uproot themselves, Ron Hunter (from a previous book) still on the run and just who is the mysterious signalman?
There were a few clues that gave me a good inkling about who the killer was but it didn’t affect my enjoyment at all. This is such a good police procedural series with such great characters, two and four legged; in my humble opinion it is about time Cadi gets to star in a book! Some great red herrings and I don’t think many will guess who the killer is. As always a very well written and very enjoyable read.
Evan Warlow and his team have another murder to solve - an aggravated burglary at Ronnie Probert's home results in the legendary rugby player dying from his injuries. Evan was on vacation in Australia at the time of the burglary, visiting his eldest son and family, along with his second son, Tom, and Tom's partner, Jodie. It was great to get some 'family time' but just after his return to Wales, the news comes that Ronnie has died from his injuries and Evan, Jess, Gil, Catrin, and Rhys are on the case. Along with this new one, there's still a search for the missing Ron Hunter, who murdered two people and attempted to murder a third. While the team tries to investigate the new crime, and satisfy the demands of the higher-ups who somehow believe that the team isn't doing enough, there appears to be a link to the older crime. And Jess and Molly end up at Evan's Wolf Lair when there is a possibile danger to them from something Jess' ex-husband has done. Cadi the Labrador seems pleased with the company. Once again, Mr. Dylan has done a great job of surrounding the crime with a lot of threads that need unravelling. I received this story as part of his ARC team, and enjoyed it.
I can’t believe that this is the eleventh book in the DCI Evan Warlow Series & it’s another great read too. It can be read as a standalone but I would highly recommend starting at the beginning; you’ll thank me.
Evan is at last visiting his family in Australia, when a well known ex-rugby player is attacked in his home. When Evan returns, he is greeted by the news that the player has died from his injuries & his team are now investigating his murder. They are on good form, as always, with plenty of friendly banter as well as earnest police work. Of course, the delightful Cadi makes an appearance too.
Meeting old friends added to the enjoyment of reading this police procedural & the writing flows at just the right pace. Red herrings aplenty & further background on the team’s personal lives helps flesh out their characters with ease. I’m ready for my Cadi cuddles in book 12 now.
This is book eleven in the DCI Warlow series but can easily be read as a stand alone. I can't express how much I love this series, Evan and the team just keep going from strength to strength. When a well known and much loved ex rugby player is attacked in his own home and then dies from his injuries Evan and the team are called in to investigate. But who would benefit from his demise? Evan trip to Australia to visit his son's and new granddaughter seems like a distant memory. Jess is also having a few issues of your own regarding her ex husband. Poor old Rhys is having his fair share of family troubles as well. And who is the mysterious signalman? An absolute gem of a read.
