Sometimes I get new books to review. I just finished The Smokefree Way by Tamir Turgal. As an addiction counselor, I’ve read many books and heard many people talk about addiction and the process of setting oneself free. I’ve never read anything as clear and direct as this one.
Turgal offers a cognitive approach to recovery from addiction to tobacco, perhaps the most persistent and frustrating addiction of them all. When most people try to quit smoking, they gravitate towards the biochemical treatments of puffing, patches and pills. But, what Turgal says is needed, is a change in thinking. He exposes many of the delusions, excuses, misperceptions, and lies that keep people stuck in their addiction.
For instance, many people are overwhelmed by how hard they think it is to stop smoking, forgetting how hard it is to keep smoking. When you smoked your first cigarettes, you didn’t feel good, you were coughing and dizzy, but you persisted. For a few days after you smoke your last cigarette, you also don’t feel good; but, if you persevere, you’re free. Yeah, you’re grouchy when you quit. Temporarily. But, when you smoke, you stink. Sure, when you quit, you gain weight. Temporarily. When you smoke, you can’t breathe, Quitting requires some sacrifices. But it’s costly to smoke, time consuming, and shaming. Quitting is hard, but it’s no harder than smoking.
Turgal deserves an award for cutting through the bullshit, the smoke and mirrors, that surrounds cigarettes.
Even though I have already been smoke free for 2 years, I still crave it. This book goes deeper than the usual advice you get from friends, doctors and others. The book explains how much of a hold the addiction has on you and how crazily it trap you in your own life. An excellent read for anyone that wants to quit or who has already quit but needs that extra validation and encouragement to stay smokefree.

Quitting smoking is one of the most difficult things many people will do in their lifetime. In this book, there is a lot of sound advice to do just that. Many methods, such as the patch, do not have a very high success rate, especially when they are tried on their own. The odds of success are increased when multiple methods are used. I would recommend adding this book to any quitting regimen as the advice provided can be quite useful in dealing with those situations when aids such as patches, lozenges and gum may not be enough. Definitely a useful book that I would recommend to anyone who wants to kick the habit. The book is well-written and easy to follow.
I received this book through the first reads giveaway program. I am not a smoker but am a counselor and work with many people who smoke and would like to quit. I appreciated this information because it is a different approach than the ones I have seen. It was easy to read and understand. I will have this in my toolbox to provide to clients I work with, and if I see amazing success, I will rerate the book as a 4 or 5.
As a smoker who quit for 9 months after reading Alan Carr's "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" I knew it was possible to quit by reading a book, and the "Smokefree Way" is a really good one.
No scare tactics, just very detailed exploration of the smoking addiction from a perspective of an ex smoker. Would recommend to any smoker who really wants to quit.
Having been Smoke Free for almost ten years now and still getting the cravings, I can say that Tamir Turgal does understand addiction. I learn a few things from his book which I have already passed on to a friend who seems to be on the right track since getting this wonderful book. Thanks Tamir
How do I quiet the voice in my head that makes me buy a pack of smokes and smoke everyone every time I've tried to quit? This is the 7th quit smoking book I've read. I've completed several programs including self hypnosis. Some have worked for a while but the voice returns and I buy a pack. Tamir FINALLY answers that question. And showed me how to end its constant chatter.
This book is easy to read. Fun to read. It completely changed my perception of why I smoke. Or, I should say, did smoke.
Enlightening in many respects. Very long winded in several chapters with repetition of those same facts in other chapters. On the whole it makes you wonder if the book has helped anyone quit successfully.
Today is Thanksgiving, and I have so much to be thankful for. I admit I am remiss in writing about this book, which was sent to me by Goodreads author Tamir Turgal for free. The reason for this being that I have been using the book to quit smoking. Four months now. I feel bad about not having posted this sooner, as it is apparent to me now that this book may have possibly saved my life. I had been a smoker for over 20 years. In fact, I felt so strongly about this book that I have given it to my daughter (who has bounced from smoking to vaping to smoking again) in hopes that it will do for her what it did for me. I then went and downloaded myself a free copy of the book from BookBub (just in case I needed to read it again!) Thank you to the author (even my doctor said I should thank you!) and to Goodreads for listing this life-saving tool that you can use to end the cycle of nicotine addiction. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who smokes! Remember also, if you smoke, you are teaching your children to smoke and giving them a gift they will wish they never got. So if you are thinking of becoming a parent and you smoke, get this book!
I read this book because I wanted to suggest it to my patients and find a better way of smoking cessation for them. The book mainly breaks down how smokers start, then progresses and a step by step explanation of how the habit develops, the physiology of the excuses and the why you should give up. Since Tamir himself was a smoker, the book seems so real, the examples apt and true to real life. I like the analogies he has used for quitting like riding a bike etc. Its also a book that places responsibility on you, it also prepares you for the hardship, the reason for withdrawal and all the other subconscious elements at work in smokers. While I liked the book, I think its only best for smokers. If you're a health professional you can create a template and in each subsequent visit, impart one chapter in brief to your patient. This book could have been so much better if the processes in the first quarter of the book or other chapters, could actually be drawn and depicted in diagrams. cycles, etc. Not many smokers will spend all the time reading these detailed chapters.
This author clearly knows his stuff, and is generous enough to share what's he's learned from his own personal experience, about how to quit smoking in a very unique way. By dissecting the addiction the reader has an understanding of the psychological and physical dependence behind the habit that keeps them hooked. It really gets down to the nitty gritty, but in a very positive way. He likens stopping the addiction to backing out of a mine, slowly and carefully, and reminds the reader that they weren't born this way.
I think a book of this caliber could easily be effective in helping to treat other addictions, because it gives one back the power to help change one's mindset. And as the author too points out "If you keep an open mind...this will work."
I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone I know who is looking to quit! A+

I had a hard time getting past the repetitiveness. The author expounds on certain things constantly in at least two different ways. That is the only hindrance that I had upon reading this book. However, it was informative and concise. I do have a hard time believing that anyone could stop smoking solely based on reading a book and thought that more than a few things would be best going over within a group setting. Written from a smokers point of view was genius, as only a smoker could know truly what one feels and thinks while consuming a cigarette. The mental/psychological points were exact and accurate as I know well enough about being a smoker. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get into the head of a smoker, especially if it is a loved one, that perhaps you just don't understand.
Although I have tried to quit smoking in the past, and even succeeded for about 6 years, when I was much younger and having babies, I didn't have the understanding of the difference between being "smokefree" and being "a smoker on a break". When I resumed smoking and then failed, numerous times, to quit again I became very frustrated and even angry with myself for my failure. I no longer had the motivation of a healthy pregnancy, but still felt the guilt of setting a bad example for my children. All three grew to be smokers as adults, a fact that I am NOT proud of. The insight gained from this book helped me immensely by helping me to understand that it's not a habit but an addiction and, most importantly, the difference between the two, why it has been so hard to stop, and how the subconscious aspects effect the process. I am very thankful that I found this book and look forward to living the rest of my life enjoying the freedom that comes from living "smokefree".

The discussions provided by the author are non-threatening and easy to digest. Furthermore, he breaks down the numerous reasons for our addiction to smoking: smoking and concentration, smoking and self-confidence, passing the time smoking, smoking, enjoyment and relaxation, etc. For example, in Chapter 4 (Stressful Situations and Chainsmoking), he clearly explains that “chain smoking actually points to the fact that smoking cigarettes does not lead to a relief from stress and anyone observing from the sidelines would undoubtedly describe the smoker as looking tenser than those around him. (He is referring to stressful situations such as in a hospital.)

Dislikes: I don’t see how just stopping to smoke will give you a serene mind. The stress of the world will lead to chaotic thinking if one doesn’t have a way to deal with the stress.
Besides, if you stop smoking, you’ll just pick up another crutch. It’s up to you want to risk a worse crutch.
Conclusion: This book is not going to be for all smokers. Personally, I found it to be a bit redundant after a while. Perhaps this was to help get the concepts into a thick skull? I hope this helps you out.

The most comprehensive, thorough and in-depth book I have ever seen on the subject. The physical, psychological, social and personal issues are all covered in great detail. Much of what is covered applies equally to many other cravings and addictions. Having the reasons and needs behind the cravings explained makes it so much easier to deal with, and in a less demanding way. The difficulties are all covered in an understanding and sympathetic way. I can't think of anything the author has left out. This is a book to keep referring back to in times of doubt as well, and keep you looking forward positively.
I loved this book! I have been trying to quit smoking over and over again for 20+ years. It’s been especially difficult because I live with a heavy smoker. Reading this book wasn’t the only thing I needed to quit, but it definitely changed the way I view my addiction and put me in the right frame of mind. I did need some help in the form of a non-nicotine medication, but am currently doing amazingly well. I am finding Part Four especially helpful right now in maintaining my new Smokefree state. I think I am finally going to get the tobacco monkey off my back!

The only thing hard to find -and it must come from you, you are the one who must make the change- is this will to stop. Read this little book, it may inspire you and motivate you to find you own beacon in a world more and more non-smoking, but please. if you get to belong to the non-smokers, teach them some tolerance, please!
I've been a smoker on and off my whole life. I was always able to stop during my pregnancies and with in a year of childbirth always started up again. In June of 2013 my Father In Law was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. He fought until Aug. of 2014 and when he passed away my children were very worried about me getting lung cancer so I decided to quit. I have been smoke free for 9 months, and even though I can't stand the smell or taste I do often crave a cigarette. I am grateful for having this book and will use it to keep me straight. I have also recommended this to read to other smokers and hope you enjoy it as i have.

The writing is very clear and concise and makes for an interesting read. Of all the books that i have browsed in this category, this one definitely gets a thumbs-up from me. Highly recommended for people who really wish to give up smoking.
this book is an amazing tool to help you quit smoking.It gives the reader different ways that smoking affects the body,mind and other areas of our lives.I have quit smoking as of 6 years ago and found this book using all that i have used to quit. I like the way the author has broken down each part with specific chapters to sort out the confusion we smokers have when trying to quit.I also like the way he even gives a brief history of the human system. I think this book should be read by all who chose to quit.

I have to say I highly recommend this book if you our thinking about quitting smoking or even if you are not quite ready. It quite possibly could be a turning point in your life. It explains the process in a different perspective then any other help to quit smoking book. It comes from an Author who has been there and done it. He explains the mental as well as the physical aspects of a smoker. This book makes sense and I'm on my way to quit smoking for good!
Got a free copy of this book on Kindle and found it to be very easy to read and understand where the author was attempting to guide the reader. I have been a pack a day smoker for over a decade and have attempted to quit smoking numerous times. This time felt different. I smoked my last cigarette 5 days ago and haven't had any serious cravings since. The way this book walks the reader through how addiction works really makes quitting easier and less stressful.
This book was sent to me by the author! This best thing I can say is that I haven't had a cigarette since I started reading. Reading this has given me the tools to develop the willpower I sorely needed to quit. My problem isn't physical but mental. Now I have a lot to think about thanks to the invaluable information provided here. I'm sure I'll be going back and reading portions of this book for a long time to come.
