I just wrote about the first book, because the full cast audio book was published, and now I could read about all these great characters again. I really love this series ❤️ 😍
Do you know what is the most fascinating thing about sci-fi books? It's the amount of things, people, devices, environments and descriptions of places that don't exist, or couldn't exist today, and the authors who have such an incredible imagination that they are able to imagine the future and tell us about all these things. When you think about it, part of the described things from old sci-fi books have now become reality 😲
What stands out incredibly in this book is how many things are described in detail that actually didn't exist in my mind until I read about it and afterwards thought, how damn brilliant they're.
Anna Mocikat has a gift for writing about things we can't even imagine in a way that stops you in your tracks and keeps you reading without break the whole night 😬
This book is more gripping and exciting than a real thriller or action movie. The characters are incredibly fascinating, and not only in a positive sense. There are a lot of bad boys and cruel guys in this story. But even they are interesting in a creepy-crawly way 🤣 The "good" characters in this story work constantly in the gray area of law, but are so lovable and interesting that you can forgive them anything.
This book is a real sci-fi thriller. It's gripping, suspense-packed and action-packed with no end. This story has so many layers and background stories that it would be complicated to explain it without spoilers anyway.
But just so we're clear, this isn't just a sci-fi-post-apocalyptic fantasy, it's also a love story and it's also a story about a very interesting spy, too and not to forget, it's also a story about cyborgs that fights for survival in the only way they know how, with pure force.
I could write more, but that would not be fair to you. You've got to experience this story for yourself.
It's a 100% recommendation from me for all sci-fi fans and those who will try a new genre (please read at first book #1).
SPACE PUNKS II: NIGHTINGALE’ SONG is the sequel to SPACE PUNKS, which is at least a very accurate title to the story. I’m a huge fan of Anna Mocikat’s BEHIND BLUE EYES series and really enjoyed the first of this series. If I had to describe it, I’d say it’s close to COWBOY BEBOP except hewing closer to cyberpunk motifs instead of Western. A bunch of sexy cybernetically augmented mercenaries live on the starship Nephilim, doing odd jobs for their mysterious boss, while being involved in both organized crime as well as politics. Most of humanity was exterminated when Earth was destroyed in the wars against the machines but the survivors live in comparative high tech luxury.
In the previous book, we had the discovery that newcomer David was actually an android that had been sent to infiltrate the crew. We also had Nightingale being horribly injured This book picks up with giving us David’s origins as well as a follow-up on Nightingale’s condition. Well, it’s not good. If he doesn’t receive a super rare part then he’ll be dead in a week. He also can’t have sex with his girlfriend, Aztec, that he has just proposed marriage to in a time when that institute is considered to be obsolete.
Much of the book is divided between the protagonists showing their complicated and fascinating relationships, world-building so we understand how this new society works, and the “big heist” where they attempt to hit a military depot in order to get the rare part that Nightingale needs to survive. Say what you will about the Nightingale crew but they are willing to do whatever they have to in order to protect one another.
The best part of the Space Punks series is definitely the cast and all of the characters are interesting with a variety of dark and troubled pasts. They’re a rare sight in science fiction in that most are in committed relationships and deeply devoted to one another while still being no less “cool” and edgy for it. As stated, the crew is intensely loyal to one another and seeing how they can rely on one another makes them easy to root for despite they’re a bunch of dedicated ruthless cyborg mercenaries.
We get a good look at Mars this book and find out how he’s gone from being first of Earth’s colonies to the center of human civilization in the setting. Despite being a space based series, it is very cyberpunk and the Pentad substitutes for the evil megacorporations of most fiction. They are a ruthless oligarchy with control over all of humanity’s vital supplies as well as militaries, so they can do more or less whatever they want without fear from the public. We also get regular tidbits from an in-universe encyclopedia that help fill in the blanks on how the universe functions.
I’m especially fond of Lucien, the villain, who fills all the depraved psychopath folders that make for a good cyberpunk villain. It may be cheating that one of the heads of the cyborg armed forces is also a serial killer but it certainly makes for a delightfully hateable villain. His scenes have genuine menace and you are worried about the protagonists when they are up against him.
In conclusion, Space Punks II: Nightingale’s Song is an excellent dark and edgy piece of science fiction that would make a good television show with a sufficiently pretty cast. Anne Mocikat is one of my favorite indie writers right now and if you want dark, forboding, and yet fun adventure fiction then this is definitely for you.
Nightingale is dying. If his CINE is not replaced there is nothing even Bonesaw can do for him. Hel vows that she will do everything in her power to save him, even if it means going up against the Legion. Meanwhile, David will have to choose where his allegiances lie as his new memories have surfaced along with the truth of what he is.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I have read all of the books in the Space Punks series as well as most, if not all, of Mocikat's other books. I have enjoyed every one and they continue to be engaging to me no matter how far down the story rabbit holes I get.
This is book two in a series and absolutely cannot be read as a stand-alone. That being said, this book picks up right where book one leaves off, so I highly suggest grabbing book one and then jumping straight into book two. We get most of the same characters in book two as we had in book one. We are still on-board the Nephilim, although there is some planetary action as well on Mars this time. As before the perspectives in this book jumps between all of our main characters to better display all of the action that is continuously going on.
Whether we are following Hel as she has a meeting with the Legionnaires to try to get the replacement CINE part or shadowing David as he uncovers his true mission, what he is capable of, and where his allegiances lie. He may have found this new family, but he was literally programmed for one objective. As we have come to expect with any Mocikat book there is rarely any time in the book that isn't packed with action. This action may be fire fights or some ill advised sex.
That being said, just because there is sex in these books Space Punks is a far cry from smut. It is a natural progression item, not anything that supersedes the plot. I fully enjoyed this book and I would say I look forward to the next in the series, but I have already finished book three as well. I am looking forward to book four, though.
This exciting continuation in the Space Punks universe had me on the edge of my seat.
It had been quite some time since I finished book one in this series but it took me no time at all to fall back into this world and remember all of its intriguing characters.
Keeping these spoiler free I will be vague but I love the extra layers to David’s character that are unveiled as time goes on. Puppy isn’t as innocent as he seems and I am soooo curious where the new developments will lead.
And I really appreciated getting to see more of Nightingale and Aztec’s relationship, as well as Hel’s and Neman (I don’t know how to spell any of the names since I have been listening to this through Audible so if I botched them my bad). Everyone is such interesting and multifaceted. I was so invested in the story I jumped into book 3 the second I finished this.
Beginning almost immediately after the end of its predecessor, Space Punks 2 is an unforgettable ride. Mocikat sparingly, tantalizingly continues to dole out clues to the questions we all want answered peppered throughout her signature cinematic action scenes. Why is Niemand different, and how did he come to experience love and switch sides? What is the connection between Hel and Lucien, and what is the extent of their powers? Of what is the Nephilim capable, and is there a ship that can match her? Will Nightingale be saved, and if so, what will be the price? What is David's mission, and who is the red-haired lady? For every answer given, new developments raise more questions. You will finish this fantastic read glad that you did and just as glad that Space Punks 3 is already available.
A fantastic continuation of an imaginative, well penned series
Mocikat writes masterful action scenes, and this book is packed from beginning to end with wild, fast-paced action. The second book in her Space Punks series picks up where book 1 left off, and it did not disappoint, in fact, it has me eagerly awaiting book 3.
Many questions from book 1 are addressed while even more, much darker, plots are introduced. David’s past, Nightingale’s injuries, Hel and Niemand… there is so much to digest in this dynamic, deep, and complex series. I love these books and highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys good science fiction.
The Space Punks embark on a dangerous journey to Mars to save Nightingale, confronting the secretive Legion head-on. Hel refuses to yield, determined to succeed against all odds. David struggles with conflicting loyalties amidst his newfound memories, risking the unity of the crew. Meanwhile, Lucien seeks revenge, posing a formidable threat to the Space Punks' mission. As tensions mount, the crew faces internal strife and external dangers, racing against time to save Nightingale. In a battle of wills and secrets, they confront their deepest fears, knowing failure is not an option.
I just finished this so I'm still thinking about everything that happened, but the story plot was so much more developed and involving than book 1. Mostly because we were already introduced to the characters so the author could focus on action and intrigue with the initial groundwork already laid in book 1. It was great! I'm glad I listened to the audiobook of book 1 just before reading this as that was a lot of fun!
I've been waiting for this to come out for a few months. Pace is fast, and like the first book, it didn't disappoint. I'm enjoying the further world building this book has offered, as well as the character development Plenty of scope for new story arcs as well, in my opinion. Very much an enjoyable read. Well done Anna 🙂
Just finished this second installment of Space Punks. Lots of action. Lots of intrigue. I love what she’s done with her world building inside the Sol system, and now can’t wait till they leave for the outer colonies. Great series!! Definitely worth the read!!
The second surpasses the first as we learn a lot about the hidden politics and, of course, more about the universe that Mocikat has created. The best bit is the glimpse into further adventures and the complicated events that have been put into motion.
There was a lot of what I called in my notes "cool stuff", and I'm definitely invested in seeing where David's story is leading, but I'm not necessarily AS invested in everything else. Still, definitely ready to carry on with the series.
SP2 is actually fantastic, great ripping story and plenty of peril and pressure to succeed as our crew of Punks cause carnage to save one of their own. Feeling the need for Pace Punks 3, on pre-order!
Action adventure with different human types centered around Mars. Really fascinating. Strong female characters but still mostly men. Characters are varied & interesting. Not YA, some adult content.
Good read but not as good as the first one IMHO. I think the first one had more action, character development, and twists. I am hoping it is a trilogy and the next one will finish it off.
